The spin dependence of π 0 inclusive production by 24 GeV/ c protons has been measured using a polarized target for Fhe Feynman x near 0 in the transverse momentum range 1.0 < p T < 2.5 GeV/ c . The results indicate a negative updown asymmetry growing strongly with p T and greater than 50% in absolute value for p T greater than 2 GeV/ c .

The proton polarization in deuteron photodisintegration has been measured at photon energies between 400 and 650 MeV at c.m. angles between 45° and 135°. To explain the polarization and differential cross-section data consistently, we have introduced dibaryon resonances and performed a partial-wave analysis at photon energies between 350 and 700 MeV. It has been shown that the existence of at least two dibaryon resonances is required in this energy range: one at ∼2380MeV with I ( J P ) = 0(3 + ) or 0(1 + ), and the other at ∼2260 MeV with I ( J P ) = 1(3 − ) or 1(2 − ).

We present results for the reactions K 0 p →Λπ + and K 0 p →∑ 0 π + , for |u'| <0. 05 ( GeV /c) 2 and kaon momenta between 1 and 8 GeV/ c . The experiment was performed ina neutral beam at the PS with a two arm spark chamber spectrometer. The cross sections show strong dependence on beam energy and momentum transfer u ′. Λ polarization is compatible with zero. We compare energy dependence of the backward cross sections with the baryon exchange model from π N scattering.

The depolarization parameter for pp inclusive scattering at an incident momentum of 6 GeV/c was measured. The D parameter for inclusive scattering indicates the dominance of natural-parity exchange at small t, except in the case of N*(1232) production, where π exchange is more important. D for elastic scattering has also been measured. This parameter shows a small decrease from unity with increasing momentum transfer.

The large-angle analyzing power A in proton-neutron elastic scattering at 2, 3, and 6 GeV/c with use of the polarized proton beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron and a liquid deuterium target have been measured. The measurements, the first at high energy, show that A is large (20-40%) and negative over much of the angular range and shows no decrease with incident energy, unlike the earlier data at smaller angles.

We have measured the polarization in π − backward elastic scattering at 2.22, 2.46, 2.71 and 3.50 GeV/ c incident momenta, in the u -range−1.0 ≦ u ≦0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The experiment used a polarized proton target and detected both pions and protons. We have found large discrepancies between the new data and the result of even the latest phase-shift analysis.

The recoil proton polarization of the reaction γ p → π 0 p was measured at a c.m. angle of 100° for incident photon energies between 451 and 1106 MeV, and at an angle of 130° for energies from 400 to 1142 MeV. One photon, decayed from a π 0 meson, and a recoil proton were detected in coincidence. Two kinds of polarization analyzer were employed. In the range of proton kinetic energy less than 420 MeV and higher than 346 MeV, carbon plates and liquid hydrogen were used for determining the polarization, respectively. The data given by the two polarimeter systems are in good agreement. Results are compared with recent phenomenological analyses. From the comparison between the present data and the polarized target data, the invariant amplitude A 3 can be estimated to be small.

The inclusive production of Λ , K S 0 , Σ ± (1385) and K ∗± (892) in π − p interactions at 6 GeV/ c has been studied. The observed cross sections are: σ ( Λ )=0.94±0.06 mb, σ (K S 0 )=0.98±0.06 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=60±7 μb , σ ( Σ − (1385))=90±9 μ b, σ( K ∗+ (892))=216±28 μ b and σ( K ∗− (892))=41±8 μ b , respectively. The inclusive spectra of these particles are presented as functions of squared transverse momentum and Feynman scaling variable x . The polarization of Λ has also been investigated. It is found from a comparison with higher-energy data that the inclusive cross sections for Σ ± (1385) and the production ratios Σ ± (1385)/ Λ in π − p at 6 GeV/ c have not reached the high-energy limiting values.

The asymmetries in forward π−N, π−Δ, and K+−(Λ+Σ) photoproduction have been measured with a 16-GeV linearly polarized beam. The experimental method and the procedures for extracting cross sections and asymmetries from the data are discussed in detail. Information on the energy and momentum-transfer dependence of cross sections for natural- and unnatural-parity exchange, interference between exchanges of opposite G parity, and vector-meson dominance is obtained and discussed.

We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed.
