Inclusive pi+-, K+- and (p, anti-p) differential cross-sections at the Z resonance

Inclusive π±, K± and\((p,\bar p)\) differential cross-sections in hadronic decays of the Z have been measured as a function ofz=Phadron/Pbeam, the scaled momentum. The results are based on approximately 520 000 events measured by the ALEPH detector at LEP during 1992. Charged particles are identified by their rate of ionization energy loss in the ALEPH Time Projection Chamber. The position, ξ*, of the peak in the ln(1/z) distribution is determined, and the evolution of the peak position with centre-of-mass energy is compared with the prediction of QCD.

Observation of orbitally excited B mesons

Experimental evidence for the existence of orbitally excited B meson states is presented in an analysis of the Bπ and B ∗ π distribution of Q = m(B ∗∗ ) − m(B (∗) ) − m(π) using Z 0 decay data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The mean Q-value of the decays B ∗∗ → B (∗) π is measured to be 284 ± 5 (stat.) ± 15 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , and the Gaussian width of the signal is 79 ± 5 (stat.) ± 8 (syst.) MeV/c 2 . This signal can be described as a single resonance of mass m = 5732 ± 5 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) MeV/c 2 and full width Γ = 145 ± 28 MeV/c 2 . The observed shape is also consistent with the production of several broad and narrow states as predicted by the quark model and partly observed in the D-meson sector. The production rate of B ∗∗ per b-jet is found to be 0.27 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.).

A Direct measurement of the pseudoscalar decay constant, f(D(s))

The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) experiment has observed purely leptonic decays of the Ds meson in the reaction e+e−→Ds+Ds− at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. Three events are observed in which one Ds decays hadronically to φπ, K¯*0K, or K¯0K, and the other decays leptonically to μνμ or τντ. With the assumption of μ−τ universality, values of the branching fraction, B(Ds→μνμ)=(1.5−0.6−0.2+1.3+0.3)%, and the Ds pseudoscalar decay constant, fDs=(4.3−1.3−0.4+1.5+0.4)×102 MeV, are obtained.

The JETSET (PS202) experiment at CERN-LEAR searches for hadronic resonances by means of in-flight antiproton-proton annihilations in the reaction p p → φφ . In order to obtain sufficient luminosity and good final-state mass resolution, this experiment uses an internal hydrogen-cluster jet target intersecting the LEAR antiproton beam. We report on the study of the reaction p p → 4K ± at 1.4 GeV / c incident p̄ momentum, and we present the first experimental observation of a stro φφ signal in this reaction.

Measurement of the forward - backward asymmetries for charm and bottom quark pair productions at S**(1/2) = 58-GeV with electron tagging

We have measured, with electron tagging, the forward-backward asymmetries of charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at $\langle \sqrt{s} \rangle$=58.01GeV, based on 23,783 hadronic events selected from a data sample of 197pb$~{-1}$ taken with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The measured forward-backward asymmetries are $A_{FB}~c = -0.49 \pm 0.20(stat.) \pm 0.08 (sys.)$ and $A_{FB}~b = -0.64 \pm 0.35(stat.) \pm 0.13 (sys.)$, which are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Measurement of the bottom quark production cross-section in 800-GeV/c proton - gold collisions

Using a silicon-microstrip detector array to identify secondary vertices, we have observed b→J/ψ→μ+μ− decays in 800GeV/c proton-gold interactions. The doubly differential cross section for J/ψ mesons originating from b-quark decays, assuming linear dependence on nucleon number, is d2σ/dxFdpT2=107±28±19[pb/(GeV/c)2]/nucleon at xF=0.05 and pT=1GeV/c. This measurement is compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The integrated b-quark production cross section, obtained by extrapolation over all xF and pT, is σ(pN→bb¯+X)=5.7±1.5±1.3 nb/nucleon.

Measurement of the total hadronic cross-section and determination of gamma - Z interference in e+ e- annihilation

The total hadronic cross section in e + e − annihilation was measured at s =5.77 GeV to be σ h = 143.6 ± 1.5 (stat) ± 3.5 (sys) pb with only the QED corrections. The measurement was based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 pb −1 accumulated by the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. Our data point put stringent constraints on the size of the γ - Z 0 interference and the Z 0 mass. Combining our data with the OPAL data at LEP, we obtained the coefficient of the interference and the Z 0 mass to be J had = 0.10 ± 0.26 and M z = 91.151 ± 0.008 GeV, respectively, in a model-independent analysis.

Determination of the strong coupling constant from jet rates in deep inelastic scattering

Jet rates in deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied with the H1 detector at HERA for momentum transfers squared between 10 and 4000 GeV 2 . It is shown that they can be quantitatively described by perturbative QCD in next to leading order making use of the parton densities of the proton and with the strong coupling constant α s as a free parameter. The measured value, α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.123 ± 0.018, is in agreement both with determinations from e + e − annihilation at LEP using the same observable and with the world average.

Observation of excited baryon states decaying to Lambda(c)+ pi+ pi-

Using data collected by the CLEO II detector, we have observed two states decaying to Λc+π+π−. Relative to the Λc+, their mass splittings are measured to be +307.5±0.4±1.0 and +342.2±0.2±0.5MeV/c2, respectively; this represents the first measurement of the less massive state. These two states are consistent with being orbitally excited, isospin zero Λc+ states.
