This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a $Z$ boson in association with $b$- or $c$-jets, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$. Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a $Z$ boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one $b$-jet, at least one $c$-jet, or at least two $b$-jets with transverse momentum $p_\textrm{T} > 20$ GeV and rapidity $|y| < 2.5$. Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation, with different choices of flavour schemes for initial-state partons, are compared with the measured cross-sections. The results are also compared with novel predictions, based on infrared and collinear safe jet flavour dressing algorithms. Selected $Z + \ge 1 c$-jet observables, optimized for sensitivity to intrinsic-charm, are compared with benchmark models with different intrinsic-charm fractions.

Inclusive photoproduction of neutral pions in the photon hemisphere at HERA.

The inclusive cross section for the photoproduction of neutral pions has been measured as a function of the transverse momentum, rapidity, and Feynman x of the pizero mesons at an average photon--proton centre-of-mass energy of 208 GeV and for photon virtualities below Q^2=0.01 GeV^2. The pizero measurement extends the range covered by previous charged particle measurements at HERA by two units of rapidity in the photon direction down to a value of -5.5 in the gamma p centre-of-mass frame. The pizero transverse momentum distribution is well described over the whole measured range by a power law ansatz, while an exponential fit falls below the data at transverse momentum values above 1.5 GeV/c. Good agreement with the predictions of the Monte Carlo models PYTHIA and PHOJET is found. In the context of the PYTHIA model the data are inconsistent with large intrinsic transverse momentum values in the photon.

We have studied the hadronic production of charmed mesons in the NA 32 experiment at CERN. A special trigger together with a high resolution vertex detector consisting of charge coupled devices and silicon microstrip detectors allowed the selection of very clean samples of charmed mesons. We have collected 852 fully reconstructed decays: 60Ds+→K+K−π+, 543D°→K−π+ andK−π+π−π+ as well as 249D+→K−π+π+ (or charge conjugate). 147 mesons out of our\({{D^0 } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{D^0 } {\bar D^0 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D^0 }}\) sample were produced via chargedD* state. For all charmed mesons we determine the total production cross-section and study thexF andpt2 distributions.

Experimental Study of Inclusive Muon Spectra at PETRA

The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables 〈zb〉=0.75±0.03±0.06, 〈zc〉=0.46±0.02±0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons R(B)=(10.5±1.5±1.3)%, R(C)=(11.5±1.0±1.7)%.

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c in the kaon fragmentation x >0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K ± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K ± → φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s -quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ + state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed.

We present results on the inclusive polarization of Λ hyperons produced in K + p interactions at 32 and 70 GeV/ c . A large positive Λ polarization is observed in the kaon fragmentation region. The polarization is energy independent, increases strongly with increasing x , but shows essentially no p T -dependence.
