The high mass μ + μ − pairs produced by 280 GeV μ + on a carbon target are studied in a search for the Y production. The high mass continuum in the region 2–18 GeV is interpreted in terms of QED pair production and of μ pairs originating from the decay of hidden and open charm particles as well as of hadrons ( π , K) from deep inelastic interactions. The upper limit for the upsilon production by muons is found to be, at the 90% confidence level, σ γ ·(γ→μ + μ − )<13·10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon.

The differential cross section for photoproduction of 1r + mesons from protons at an energy Ey = 230 MeV has been measured for center-of-mass angles of 0, 38, 82, 90, 116, 138, 146, and 180°. A magnetic spectrometer and a meson-stopping detector were used to identify mesons from momentum and range. stopped 1r+ mesons were detected by means of the 1r- p. decay. The statistical accuracy of the results is ±(3-4)% on the average. From comparison of the experimental data with theoretical calculations based on dispersion relations, we have estimated the value of the y1rp coupling constant, Ay1rp = (0.63 ± O.ll)ef.

New experimental results are presented on inclusive production properties of\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *+ } \)(1385) and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *+ } \)(1385) inK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c. The analysis is based on significantly larger statistics than previously available. A comparison is also made of invariantx-distributions ofK0/\(\bar K^0 \),\(\bar \Lambda \) and\(\bar \Xi ^ +\) and of\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *\pm } \)(1385) andK*+(892). These spectra exhibit regularities expected from the quark-recombination picture when it is assumed that the strange mesons and antibaryons are produced off the strange\(\bar s\)-valence-quark in the incidentK+ meson. Transverse momentum distributions are also presented forK*+(892) and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *\pm } \)(1385) and found to be very similar. The results on strange antibaryon average multiplicities disagree strongly with a recent version of the additive quark model.

The inclusive production of Ξ + and Ξ − hyperons is investigated in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, 36.4±9 μ b for the Ξ + and 6.5±3 μ b for the Ξ − , are rising strongly with energy similarly to Λ and Λ production in K + p interactions. The Ξ + are produced preferentially in the forward direction in the c.m.s., while the Ξ − are produced dominantly backwards. The average transverse momenta 〈p T 〉 Ξ + =0.73±0.09 GeV /c and 〈 p T 〉 Ξ − =0.58±0.09 GeV/ c .

Results of the total cross section differenceΔσL in anp transmission experiment at 1.19, 2.49 and 3.65 GeV incident neutron beam kinetic energies are presented. Measurements were performed at the Synchrophasotron of the Laboratory of High Energies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Results were obtained with a polarized beam of free quasi-monochromatic neutrons passing through the new Dubna frozen spin proton target. The beam and target polarizations were oriented longitudinally. The present results were obtained at the highest energies of free polarized neutrons that can be reached at present. They extend the energy range of existing results from PSI, LAMPF and Saclay measured between 0.066 and 1.10 GeV. The new results are compared withΔσL(pn) data determined as a difference betweenΔσL(pd) andΔσL(pp) ANL-ZGS measurements. The values ofΔσL for the isospin stateI=0 were deduced using knownpp data.
Errors contain statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature. Axis error includes +- 0.05/0.05 contribution (An additional error due to the extrapolation towards zero solid angle).
