CROSS SECTION WAS ESTIMATED ASSUMING IT'S INDEPENDENCE OF THE ANTIPROTON M OMENTUM.
New data are reported on antiproton annihilations at rest with production of Λ and K s 0 , using a streamer chamber with 3 He, 4 He and 20 Ne as gas targets. The data include Λ, K s 0 , ΛK s 0 and K s 0 K S 0 production rates and momentum distributions, π − momentum spectra, mean numbers of charged particles generally and of negatively charged particles separately for different reaction channels. The yields are compared to simple combinatorial calculations based on the extreme assumptions of Λ production via B = 1 or via B = 0 ( K ̄ rescattering) annihilations. Λ and K s 0 momentum spectra are compared to simple model calculations where B = 0 and B = 1 annihilations with and without final-state interactions are considered. A review of existing data on Λ and K s 0 production is presented, showing the dependence on the p ̄ momentum and on the mass number of the target.

The inclusive production of Ks0, Λ, Λ¯, and Ks0Λ in the p¯Ta reaction at 4 GeV/c was measured and compared with that in the p¯p reaction. The total inelastic and topological cross sections were also measured. The number of Λ’s produced in the p¯Ta reaction was 11.3 times larger than that expected from the geometrical cross section, which is defined as A2/3 times the cross section for the p¯p reaction. The yield ratio Λ¯/Λ was found to be 2×10−2. These values cannot be accounted for by a straightforward extension of the p¯N reaction. Besides, a correlation of 2 vees like Ks0-Λ could not prove their simultaneous production. Nuclear temperatures of 135 and 97 MeV were obtained from the kinetic energy spectra of Ks0 and Λ, respectively. The kinematical characteristics of the Ks0 and Λ produced were analyzed in terms of the fireball model.

A strong-focusing momentum channel has been arranged to form a beam from antiprotons produced by 6.0-Bev protons striking an internal target of the Bevatron. The channel consists of five 4-inch-diameter magnetic quadrupole lenses and two deflecting magnets adjusted to give a ±5% momentum interval. The antiprotons were selected from a large background of mesons by a scintillation counter telescope with a time-of-flight coincidence circuit having a resolution of ±2×10−9 second. This system allowed detection of approximately 400 antiprotons per hour. With a liquid hydrogen attenuator, the total antiproton-proton cross section at four different energies, 190, 300, 500, and 700 Mev, has been observed to be 135, 104, 97, and 94 mb, respectively. Also, the total cross sections for antiprotons incident on Be and C have been measured at two energies. The inelastic cross sections for carbon have been measured by observing the pulse heights produced by the interactions in a target of liquid scintillator. To measure the inelastic cross section for a high-Z element, lead wafers were immersed in the liquid scintillator, and to select inelastic events the pulse heights were measured.
