An improved measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Z →b b ̄ decays is presented, based on a sample of 4.1 million hadronic Z decays collected by ALEPH between 1991 and 1995. Data are analysed as a function of polar angle of the event axis and b purity. The event tagging efficiency and mean b -jet hemisphere charge are measured directly from data. From the measured forward-backward jet charge asymmetry, the b quark asymmetry at s =m Z is determined to be: A b FB =0.1017±0.0038(stat.)±0.0032(syst.). In the context of the Standard Model this corresponds to a value of the effective weak mixing angle of sin 2 θ W eff =0.23109±0.00096.
Only statistical errors are given for sqrt(s) = 89.43 and 92.97 GeV.

An experimental investigation of the structure of identified quark and gluon jets is presented. Observables related to both the global and internal structure of jets are measured; this allows for test

Using data collected from 1992 to 1995 with the ALEPH detector at LEP, a measurement of the colour factor ratios CA/CF and TF /CF and the strong coupling constant αs = CFαs(MZ)/(2π) has been performed by fitting theoretical predictions simultaneously to the measured differential two-jet rate and angular distributions in four-jet events. The result is found to be in excellent agreement with QCD, {fx4-1} Fixing CA/CF and TF/CF to the QCD values permits a determination of αs(MZ) and ηf, the number of active flavours. With this measurement the existence of a gluino with mass below 6.3 GeV/c2 is excluded at 95% confidence level.
Fit A: using all kinematical distributions. NC, CF, and TF are the color factors for SU(3) group, NF is the number of the active flavors.
Fit B: using all kinematical distributions, but QCD magnitudes for color factors are used: FA(DEF=NC/CF)) = 2.25 and TF/CF = 0.375. NC, CF, and TF are the color factors for SU(3) group, NF is the number of the active flavors.
Fit C: the QCD magnitudes for color factors and NF = 5 are used.
Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have found evidence for the production of the excited charmed baryon state Λ c (2593) + in the channel Λ c + π + π − . Its mass was determined to be (2594.6±0.9±0.4) MeV/c 2 , and the natural width measured to be Γ = (2.9 −2.1−1.4 +2.9+1.8 ) MeV. The production cross section times the branching ratios of σ ( e + e − → Λ c (2593) + X ) × Br ( Λ c (2593) + → Λ c + π + π − ) × Br ( Λ c + → pK − π + ) was measured to be (0.25 −0.13 +0.24 ±0.13) pb. The fractions of Λ c (2593) + decays proceeding through the Σ c 0 π + and Σ c ++ π − channels were determined to be 0.29±0.10±0.11 and 0.37±0.12±0.13, respectively.
Results with and without extrapolation.
Previously published and as yet unpublished QCD results obtained with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 are presented. The unprecedented statistics allows detailed studies of both perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of strong interactions to be carried out using hadronic Z and tau decays. The studies presented include precise determinations of the strong coupling constant, tests of its flavour independence, tests of the SU(3) gauge structure of QCD, study of coherence effects, and measurements of single-particle inclusive distributions and two-particle correlations for many identified baryons and mesons.

A measurement of the inclusive production of π0 mesons in hadronic Z decays is presented and compared to Monte Carlo model predictions. The analysis is based on approximately 2 million hadronic events recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of ⊡s = 91.2 GeV. Neutral pions are reconstructed using photons measured in the electromagnetic calorimeter and photons from conversion pairs. The inclusive π0 momentum spectrum is measured in the range 0.025 < xp = p/pbeam < 1. In this range the number of π0 per hadronic Z is found to be 4.80 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.31(sys). The differential inclusive π0 cross section is also measured as a function of transverse momentum with respect to the event plane (pTin and pTout).

Four-fermion events have been selected in a data sample of 5.8 pb −1 collected with the aleph detector at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. The final states ℓ + ℓ − q q , ℓ + ℓ − ℓ + ℓ − , ν ν q q , and ν ν ℓ + ℓ − have been examined. Five events are observed in the data, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 6.67±0.38 events from four-fermion processes and 0.14 −0.05 +0.19 from background processes.
The statistical and systematic uncertainties have been combined in quadrature in the background expectations.
The B0 - B̄0 average mixing parameter and b forward-backward asymmetry AFB0(b) are measured from a sample of about 4 200 000 Z → qq̄ events recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP in the years 1990–1995. High transverse momentum electrons and muons produced in b semileptonic decays provide the tag of the quark flavour and of its charge. The average mixing parameter and the pole b asymmetry are measured to be = 0.1246 ± 0.0051stat ± 0.0052syst, AFB0(b) = 0.1008 ± 0.0043stat ± 0.0028syst. The value of sin2θweff = 0.23198 ± 0.00092 is extracted from the asymmetry measurement.
