212 interactions of 2.75-Bev protons have been observed in a hydrogen-filled diffusion cloud chamber. The data indicate an elastic cross section of 15 millibarns, with about 9 millibarns cross section for single pion production, 13 millibarns for double, and 4 for triple. There is one example of quadruple pion production. One definite example of the production of heavy unstable particles was observed, and two doubtful cases. The median elastic scattering angle was 19° in the c.m. system. Angle and momentum distributions for inelastic events are consistent with those observed at lower energies.

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.

We present an analysis of ππN final states obtained from π−p interactions at 2.26 GeV/c. Strong ρ production is present in both final states. In addition, significant nucleon isobar production is observed. We observed the following cross sections: σ(π−π0p)=3.77±0.13 mb, σ(π−π+n)=5.67±0.17 mb, σ(ρ−p)=2.19±0.09 mb, σ(Δ+(1236)π−)=0.30±0.10 mb, σ(N0(1650)π0)=0.49±0.07 mb, σ(ρ0n)=2.89±0.11 mb, σ(Δ−(1236)π+)=0.11±0.06 mb, σ(N+(1470)π−)=0.24±0.06 mb, and σ(N+(1650)π−)=0.45±0.05 mb. The spin-density matrix elements are determined for the ρ0 by interpreting the ρ0 asymmetry as an interference between the resonant P wave and a T=0 S wave. A search for the ε0 in the π+π−n final state failed to yield a direct observation of this effect.

A measurement of the differential cross section for the reaction n + p → d + π° has been made using a neutron beam with kinetic energies up to 720 MeV. The angle and momentum of the deuterons were measured using an analyzing magnet and wire spark chambers with a magnetostrictive readout. The photons from the decaying π° were not detected. The neutron energy was calculated from the measured deuteron angle and momentum. The cross sections are compared to those for the reaction π + + d ⇆ p + p as a test of isotopic spin invariance in strong interactions. The symmetry of the cross sections about 90° is also investigated, and an upper limit of about 1% is placed on the real part of the ratio of isospin-violating to isospin-conserving amplitudes.

Seventeen differential cross sections of the pion-nucleon charge-exchange reaction have been measured at total center-of-mass energies of 1245, 1337, and 1363 MeV. Most measurements are based on the neutron-photon coincidence method, using carefully calibrated neutron counters and an efficient, large-area photon detector. The results are used to test the predictions of charge independence, with which they agree. The results also confirm the Ayed-Bareyre-Sonderegger phase-degeneracy hypothesis at θ̃π0=180°.

INTEGRATED CROSS SECTION USING EXPONENTIAL FIT TO FORWARD PEAK (SLOPE = 25.2 +- 1.4 GEV**-2).
Results are presented of a wire-spark-chamber spectrometer measurement of the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 14.15 GeV/c. The region covered in the square of the four-momentum transfer, t, is 0.01<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2. The cross section is found to obey very nearly a simple exponential t dependence with no evidence of structure. A fit to the data of the form dσdt∝exp(bt+ct2) on the range 0.05<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2 (i.e., above the region affected by Coulomb scattering) yields b=8.26±0.10 (GeV/c)2 and c=1.01±0.17 (GeV/c)−4. Considering the results of previous measurements, b≃11 (GeV/c)−2 for −t<0.05 (GeV/c)2, a deviation from the simple exponential near −t≃0.05 (GeV/c)2 is indicated.

The differential cross sections of π−p→γn at center-of-mass energy Ẽ=1363, 1337, and 1245 MeV are presented. The angular distributions are compared with recent γn→π−p experiments. Though the cross sections for π−p→γn are somewhat lower than those for the inverse reaction, when all uncertainties are considered, we find that our data are in acceptable agreement at all three energies with the inverse reaction determined from π−π+ ratio measurements, in support of time-reversal invariance. The agreement with bubble-chamber measurements at Ẽ=1363 and 1337 MeV is less satisfactory. The isotensor dip test applied to our data is inconclusive. Our measurements are compared with many multipole analyses, disagreeing with most, in particular with pure fixed- t dispersion relation calculations. We find no evidence, in the sense suggested by Donnachie, for the classification of the P11(1470) resonance in an SU(3) antidecuplet. The data are consistent with a small radiative decay of the P11(1470) resonance, as predicted by quark models.

In exposures of the Argonne National Laboratory 12-ft bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium to a neutrino beam, we have observed events consisting of (1) a single π+ meson originating in the liquid, and (2) a proton with an e+e− pair pointing to it. Only a small fraction of these events can be ascribed to known reactions such as np→nnπ+ and np→npπ0. The remaining events, which correspond to a signal of about 4.5 standard deviations, we ascribe to the reactions νp→νnπ+ and νpπ0.

Differential cross-section measurements are presented for π−p→γn at five energies around the p33(1232) resonance. A detailed comparison is made with γn→π−p deduced from γd experiments. In general, the results are in support of detailed balance. Using the Christ-Lee-Donnachie-Shaw model, our new data indicate that the T-violating phase in the isovector part of the M1+ multipole is less than 2°, which is a very sensitive test of time-reversal invariance. No evidence is found for a possible isotensor component of the electromagnetic current. Our data are compared to various multipole analyses. In general, the agreement is poor.

The reactions K − p→ π − Σ + (1385) and K − p→ π + Σ − (1385) are studied at 4.2 GeV c incident momentum using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to ∼80 events/μb. The total and differential cross sections are presented. Amplitude analyses are performed and the complete Σ ± (1385) helicity spin density matrices are extracted. The results are compared with the predictions of the additive quark model and exchange degeneracy. A substantial cross section is observed for the reaction K − p→ π + Σ − (1385) in the forward direction, which implies exotic meson quantum numbers in the t -channel. One possible interpretation of this process provides an explanation for the small but significant violations of the additive quark model predictions observed in the reaction K − p→ π − Σ + (1385) at low four-momentum transfer. In the backward direction unnatural parity exchange is shown to give a larger contribution to K − p→ Σ − (1385) π + than natural parity exchange.

Total and annihilation cross sections for p¯p and p¯d have been measured over the momentum range 355-1066 MeV/c at closely spaced momenta and with good energy resolution. No evidence is seen for the narrow structure reported by other experiments in the vicinity of 500 MeV/c. The present measurements indicate a broader enhancement in this region, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have a height of ∼ 3 mb and a width of ∼ 20 MeV. The production of J/ ϑ and ϑ′ has been measured in 250 GeV muon iron interactions. The measured total cross sections are σ ( μ N → μ J/ ϑ X)=0.74±0.14 nb and σ ( μ N → μϑ ′X)=0.16 ± 0.07 nb. An upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio for ϒ production of BR · σ ( μ N → μϒ X) < 5.2 × 10 −38 cm 2 (at 90% confidence level) is obtained. The first-order photon-gluon fusion model agrees well with the measured Q 2 and ν dependence of the J/ ϑ data and is used to extract the gluon momentum distribution. However, higher order QCD effects are needed to explain the Z distribution of the J/ ϑ and the observed broadening of the P t 2 distribution with decreasing Z . The decay angular distributions of the J/ ϑ are found to be flat in the s -channel frame, but there is evidence for polarisation in the t -channel frame.

Dimuon and trimuon events produced by the interaction of 250 GeV muons in an iron target have been studied and are shown to originate predominantly from charm production. The data are used to measure the contribution of charm to the nucleon structure function F 2 . The cross sections for real photoproduction ( Q 2 =0) of charm in the current fragmentation region are derived as a function of photon energy and are found to be ∼0.6% of the total, hadronic photoproduction cross section in this energy range. The measured cross sections are found to be well represented by the photon-gluon fusion model. The charmed quark fragmentation function is obtained by using this model to fit the measured decay muon energy distribution and is found to be well represented by exp(1.6±1.6) Z . The data are used to study the momentum distribution of the gluons in the nucleon. An upper limit of 1.4% (90% confidence level) is set on the branching ratio D→ μν and a model-dependent upper limit on the branching ratio F→ μν is derived.

In an experiment with the hydrogen bubble chamber BEBC at CERN multiplicities of hadrons produced in νp and v p interactions have been investigated. Results are presented on the multiplicities of charged hadrons and neutral pions, forward and backward multiplicities of charged hadrons and correlations between forward and backward multiplicities. Comparisons are made with hadronic reactions and e + e − annihilation. In the framework of the quark-parton model the data imply similar charged multiplicities for the fragments of a u- and a d-quark, and a larger multiplicities for the fragments of a uu- than for a ud-diquark. The correlation data suggest independent fragmentation of the quark and diquark for hadronic masses above ∼ 7 GeV and local charge compensation within an event.

In an inclusive experiment, isotopically resolved fragments, 3≤Z≤13, produced in high-energy proton-nucleus collisions have been studied using a low mass time-of-flight, gas ΔE-silicon E spectrometer and an internal gas jet. Measurement of the kinetic energy spectra from 5 to 100 MeV enabled an accurate determination of fragment cross sections from both xenon and krypton targets. Fragment spectra showed no significant dependence on beam energy for protons between 80 and 350 GeV/c. The observed isobaric yield is given by YαAf−τ, where τ∼2.6 for both targets; this also holds for correlated fragment data. The power law is the signature for the fragment formation mechanism. We treat the formation of fragments as a liquid-gas transition at the critical point. The critical temperature Tc can be determined from the fragment isotopic yields, provided one can set an energy scale for the fragment free energy. The high energy tails of the kinetic energy spectra provide evidence that the fragments originate from a common remnant system somewhat lighter than the target which disassembles simultaneously via Coulomb repulsion into a multibody final state. Fragment Coulomb energies are about 110 of the tangent sphere values. The remnant is characterized by a parameter T, obtained from the high energy tails of the kinetic energy distributions. T is interpreted as reflecting the Fermi momentum of a nucleon in this system. Since T≫Tc, and T is approximately that value expected for a cold nucleus, we conclude that the kinetic energy spectra are dominated by this nonthermal contribution. The measurements of the z and p T 2 distribution of hadrons produced in the interactions of 200 GeV muons with copper and carbon nuclei are shown in different x Bj and virtual photon energy intervals. Effects of the jet scattering are seen at the lowest virtual photon energies while for energies above 70 GeV there is no evidence of these effects. Comparison with a theoretical model indicates that at high jet energies the parton fragmentation distance is greater than the nuclear radius and that the parton absorption cross section is less than 10 mb.

Data from a neutrino and antineutrino hydrogen experiment with BEBC are used to investigate transverse properties of the produced charged hadrons. Measurements are presented on average transverse momenta of charged pions as functions of Feynman-x and the hadronic mass, on the transverse momentum flow within an event and on jet-related quantities. The main features of the data are well described by the LUND model. The data favour a version of the model in which soft gluon effects are included and the primordial transverse momentum of the quarks in the proton is small. Effects from 1st order QCD (hard gluon emission) are negligible.
