The ZEUS detector has been used to measure the proton structure functionF2. During 1993 HERA collided 26.7 GeV electrons on 820 GeV protons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.54 pb−1, representing a twenty fold increase in statistics compared to that of 1992. Results are presented for 7<Q2<104 GeV2 andx values as low as 3×10−4. The rapid rise inF2 asx decreases observed previously is now studied in greater detail and persists forQ2 values up to 500 GeV2.

Production characteristics of K0 and light meson resonances in hadronic decays of the Z0

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adye, T. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 65 (1995) 587-602, 1995.
Inspire Record 377487 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48348

An analysis of inclusive production of K0 and the meson resonances K*±(892), ρ0(770),f0(975) andf2(1270) in hadronic decays of the Z0 is presented, based on about 973,000 multihadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1991 and 1992. Overall multiplicities have been determined as 1.962±0.060 K0 mesons, 0.712±0.067 K*±(892) and 1.21±0.15ρ0(770) per hadronic Z0 decay. The average multiplicities off0(975) for scaled momentum,xp, in the range 0.05≤xp≤0.6 and off2(1270) for 0.05≤xp≤1.0 are 0.098±0.016 and 0.170±0.043 respectively. Thef0(975) and ρ0(770)xp-spectra have similar shapes. Thef2(1270)/ρ0(770) ratio increases withxp. The average multiplicities and the differential cross sections are compared with the JETSET Parton Shower model. The model with default parameters fails to reproduce the experimental K0 momentum spectrum at low momentum, describes the K*±(892) and ρ0(770)xp-spectrum shapes, but significantly overestimates their production rates.

Precision measurement of the proton spin structure function g1(p).

We have measured the ratio g1pF1p over the range 0.029<x<0.8 and 1.3<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized ammonia. An evaluation of the integral ∫01g1p(x, Q2)dx at fixed Q2=3 (GeV/c)2 yields 0.127±0.004(stat)±0.010(syst), in agreement with previous experiments, but well below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction of 0.160±0.006. In the quark-parton model, this implies Δq=0.27±0.10.

Exclusive ϱ 0 and φ muoproduction on deuterium, carbon and calcium has been studied in the kinematic range 2< Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 and 40 < ν < 180GeV. We discuss the Q 2 dependence of the cross sections, the transverse momentum distributions for the vector mesons, the decay angular distributions and, in the case of the ϱ 0 , nuclear effects. The data for 0 production are compatible with a diffractive mechanism. The distinct features of φ production are a smaller cross section and less steep p t 2 distributions than those for the 0 mesons.

A Search for excited fermions in electron - proton collisions at HERA

The ZEUS collaboration Derrick, M. ; Krakauer, D. ; Magill, S. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 65 (1995) 627-648, 1995.
Inspire Record 378836 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.45049

A search for excited states of the standard model fermions was performed using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider, operating at a centre of mass energy of 296 GeV. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb−1, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into final states composed of a fermion and a gauge boson. Limits on the coupling strength times branching ratio of excited fermions are presented for masses between 50 GeV and 250 GeV, extending previous search regions significantly.

Inclusive jet differential cross-sections in photoproduction at HERA

Phys.Lett.B 342 (1995) 417-432, 1995.
Inspire Record 378838 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.45054

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q 2 below 4 GeV 2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb −1 . These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep -laboratory range −1 < η jet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - θ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130–270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval −3 < η jet ( λp CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV 2 and photon fractional momenta down to x γ ∼ 10 −2 . Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured η jet and E t jet distributions.

Observation of orbitally excited B mesons

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adye, T. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 345 (1995) 598-608, 1995.
Inspire Record 382208 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48321

Experimental evidence for the existence of orbitally excited B meson states is presented in an analysis of the Bπ and B ∗ π distribution of Q = m(B ∗∗ ) − m(B (∗) ) − m(π) using Z 0 decay data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The mean Q-value of the decays B ∗∗ → B (∗) π is measured to be 284 ± 5 (stat.) ± 15 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , and the Gaussian width of the signal is 79 ± 5 (stat.) ± 8 (syst.) MeV/c 2 . This signal can be described as a single resonance of mass m = 5732 ± 5 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) MeV/c 2 and full width Γ = 145 ± 28 MeV/c 2 . The observed shape is also consistent with the production of several broad and narrow states as predicted by the quark model and partly observed in the D-meson sector. The production rate of B ∗∗ per b-jet is found to be 0.27 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.).

Strange and multistrange baryon and antibaryon production is a useful probe into the dynamics of the hot hadronic matter created in central heavy ion interactions. Relative production yields and transverse mass spectra are presented for Λ, Λ , Ξ − and Ξ + hyperons produced in central sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon.
