A bubble-chamber experiment in which the reaction π−+p→π+π+N was studied at a beam momentum of 2.14 BeV/c yielded 1533 and 2234 events of the final states π−π0p and π−π+n, respectively. These events are dominated by the formation of the ρ resonance, which is produced mostly in the forward direction. Both the production and decay angular distributions of the ρ− agree very well with the predictions of the one-pion exchange theory modified by absorption effects. The decay angular distribution of the ρ0 shows the well-known forward-backward asymmetry. This effect is interpretable as the result of the interference between the ρ0 and an isospin-zero s-wave π−π resonance. The production of the ρ0, in addition to its forward peak, shows a weak backward peak. Partial cross sections of various final states are also presented.

We present data on the reaction K+p→K+p at large angles. Between the forward diffraction peak and the backward peak the cross section is independent of four-momentum transfer but varies with incident momentum.

Observation of Upsilon, Upsilon', and Upsilon'' at the Cornell electron Storage Ring

Inspire Record 157729 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20731

The ϒ, ϒ′, and ϒ′′ states have been observed at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring as narrow peaks in σ(e+e−→hadrons) versus beam energy. Data were collected during a run with integrated luminosity of 1000 nb−1, using the Columbia University-Stony Brook segmented NaI detector. The measured mass differences are M(ϒ′)−M(ϒ)=559±1(±3) MeV and M(ϒ′′)−M(ϒ)=889±1(±5) MeV, where the errors in parentheses represent systematic uncertainties. Preliminary values for the leptonic width ratios were also obtained.

Observation of the Upsilon''' at CESR

Inspire Record 9427 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20691

During an energy scan at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, with use of the Columbia University-Stony Brook NaI detector, an enhancement in σ(e+e−→hadrons) is observed at center-of-mass energy ∼10.55 GeV. The mass and leptonic width of this state (ϒ′′′) suggest that it is the 4S13 bound state of the b quark and its antiquark. After applying to the data a cut in a (pseudo) thrust variable, the natural width is measured to be Γ=12.6±6.0 MeV, indicating that the ϒ′′′ is above the threshold for BB¯ production.

INCLUSIVE K0 PRODUCTION IN E+ E- ANNIHILATION AT THE UPSILON RESONANCES

Inspire Record 183794 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28689

We report on inclusive K 0 production in the region of the upsilon resonances (9.4–10.6 GeV). The K 0 yield for the resonances and continuum below the B B threshold is found to be constant at 0.82 ± 0.10 K 0 per observed hadronic event. At the ϒ (4S), however, the K 0 yield is significantly higher, 1.58 ± 0.35. This increase in K 0 production and the differential cross section d σ /d p of kaons are consistent with B B decay of the ϒ (4S) resonance with the bottom quarks subsequently decaying primarily into charmed quarks.

The CUSB detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring has been used to measure R=σ(e+e−→hadrons)σ(e+e−→μ+μ−) in the c.m. energy regions between the ϒ′′ and the ϒ′′′, and above the ϒ′′′ up to s=11.6 GeV, with integrated luminosities of 5000 and 2100 nb−1, respectively. No narrow resonances are observed, and limits on the leptonic widths are presented. The average value of R increases by 0.31±0.06 across the flavor threshold.

We have studied the topologies of hadronic events in e + e - annihilation data taken in the region of the upsilon resonances with the non-magnetic CUSB detectors at CESR. Using a thrust-like variable we compare the decay of ϒ, ϒ′ and ϒPrime; find for ϒ″ a significant excess of high thrust events, which we interpret as evidence for electric dipole transitions.

Inclusive Production of Direct Photons in 200-{GeV}/$c$ Collisions

McLaughlin, M. ; Biel, J. ; Bromberg, C. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 51 (1983) 971, 1983.
Inspire Record 191763 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20473

The authors have measured the inclusive production of direct photons in the transverse momentum (pT) range 2.1-5.0 GeV/c in 200-GeV/c collisions of protons and π+ mesons on a carbon target. A significant yield of direct photons was observed for pT>2.5 GeV/c. The invariant cross section for direct-photon production, when compared with measurements from the CERN intersecting storage rings, can be expressed in terms of pT and xT=2pTs as (42±14)(1−xT)8.1±1.0pT−6.6±0.3 μb/GeV2 for the c.m. energy range from s=19.4 to 63 GeV, and for the xT range from 0.2 to 0.5.

Nuclear Enhancement of pi0 and eta mesons Produced at Large Transverse Momenta

Povlis, J. ; Biel, J. ; Bromberg, C. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 51 (1983) 967, 1983.
Inspire Record 191764 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20477

The authors have measured the large-pT inclusive cross sections for π0 and η production near 90° in the center-of-mass system in 200-GeV/c π+ and proton collisions with beryllium, carbon, and aluminum targets. The cross section for both π0 and η mesons rises with increasing nucleon number (A) of the target nucleus as Aα, with α>1. The ratio of the π0 yield in pA collisions to that in π+A collisions decreases with increasing pT.
