The results of the experiment searching for quarks with charge − 1 3 and 2 3 produced by 70 GeV protons on an aluminium target at zero angle are reported. For the selection of quarks the system of spectrometric scintillation counters, time-of-flight spectrometer, gas Cerenkov threshold counter and magnetic spectrometer with spark chambers were used. In the range of masses available at the IHEP accelerator, quarks were not found. The upper limit estimation of the differential cross-section for quark production with mass ⩽ 5 GeV /c 2− and charge −1 3 is 7×10 −38 cm 2 / ster GeV /c (with 90% confidence level). The total cross-section for quark production with charge −1 3 and mass 4.5–5 GeV /c 2 does not exceed 3×10 −39 cm 2 .

We have analyzed the two-prong final states in π+p interactions at 3.9 GeVc. Our result for elastic scattering is σ (elastic) = 6.50±0.1 mb (statistical error only). We find the elastic slope to be 6.61±0.14 (GeVc)−2. We find the elastic forward cross section to be 40.0±1.4 mb(GeVc)2. We have applied a longitudinal-momentum analysis to the one-pion-production channel. We find the cross section for the reaction π++p→π++π0+p to be 2.30±0.06 mb and that for π++p→π++π++n to be 1.45±0.05 mb. For resonance-production cross sections in these channels we find Δ(1236)=0.60±0.07 mb, ρ(760)=0.86±0.06 mb, and diffraction dissociation = 1.69±0.11 mb. We find that we can satisfactorily fit all distributions in the one-pion-production channel without assuming any phase-space production. In the missing-mass channel we observe dominant Δ++(1236) production plus evidence for A2+ production.

The reaction K − p → X K − p has been measured at 25 and 40 GeV/ c at the Serpukhov accelerator using the CERN-IHEP boson spectrometer. At both energies we observe production of the resonances K ∗− (890) and K ∗− (1420) in the channels K ∗− → K 0 π − and K − π 0 ; the momentum dependence of their production cross sections is found to be σ[ K ∗− (890)] ∞ p inc −1.48±0.04 and σ [ K ∗− (1420)] ∞ p inc −0.8±0.2 .

Elastic diffraction scattering of π − , K − and p on protons has been measured at 25 and 40 GeV/c at the Serpukhov Proton Accelerator. Differential elastic cross sections and diffraction slopes are presented in the momentum-transfer interval 0.07–0.80 (GeV/ c ) 2 and compared with existing data at lower energies.

The reaction K − p → K − π − π + p has been measured at 25 and 40 GeV/ c at the Serpukhov Proton Accelerator. The production cross section at 25 and 40 GeV/ c as a function of momentum transfer and K ππ mass is presented, and results of the partial-wave analysis of the K ππ system yielding information about Q(1300), K ∗ (1400) and L(1770) mesons are discussed.

Cross sections, mass spectra, angular distributions and several other features of Ξ − and Ω − production from photons and neutrons in K − d interactions at 4.93 GeV/ c are presented. A five standard deviation peak is observed in Ξ K π mass spectra near 2.6 GeV/ c 2 . A sharp rise in the Ξ − three- and four-body cross sections from K − n interactions suggests direct-channel Σ ∗ (3.0–3.5) formation.

A simultaneous partial-wave analysis of the three final states K + p, K ∗ (892)N and KΔ(1236) is attempted using inelastic data with large statistics at 1.21, 1.29, 1.38 and 1.69 GeV/ c as well as existing data on the elastic reaction. The constraint of unitarity, which is almost saturated by these reactions, allows one to determine the size and relative phases of the dominant partial waves and to give some limits on the others. Their variation with energy is discussed, as well as the consistency of the different sets of elastic phase shifts with the inelastic data. We also compare the predictions of the duality hypothesis with the data.

Invariant mass spectrum of μ + μ − pairs produced by 70 GeV/ c protons in Be target are presented. Distinct enhancements in the mass regions of ϱ, ω mesons, φ meson and J/ψ particle are observed. For J/ψ production x and p ⊥ 2 distributions are given. The total cross section for the reaction p + Be → ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) + … is equal to 9.5 ± 2.5 nb/nucleus .
