The production of the ω meson by virtual photons has been measured as a function of Q2 and W. The ratio of ω production to ρ0 production is independent of Q2 in contrast to indications at lower values of W.

Meson Production by Delta Exchange in pi- p Interactions at 4-GeV/c

A streamer-chamber spectrometer is triggered by fast forward protons from 4-GeV/c π−p interactions at the Bevatron. Meson-resonance production in the backward, Iu=32 exchange reactions π−p→pM− are studied, where M− refers to π−, ρ−, A1−, A2−, and B−. Elastic scattering and ρ− production are observed and discussed in detail. No backward A1−, A2−, or B− production is observed at the level of approximately 5 βb.

The ratios of K+, K−, p, and p¯ yields to pion yields at transverse momenta (p⊥) ranging from 0.77 to 6.91 GeV/c arepresented for 200-, 300-, and 400-GeV p−p and 400-GeV p−d collisions. The dependences of the particle ratios on p⊥ and the scaling variable x⊥=2p⊥s are discussed.

Diffractive Dissociation and N* Production in pi- n --> pi- pi- p at 15-GeV/c

Diffractive dissociation of neutrons and N ∗ production are studied in the reaction π − n → π − π − p at 15 GeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by a broad, low-mass diffractive enhancement in the pπ − mass. Evidence is presented for the production of at least one N ∗ resonance in the mass region 1.4–1.8 GeV. Comparison with ISR data suggest that this N ∗ resonance is produced by pomeron exchange. The N ∗ production occurs predominantly at t ′ > 0.1 GeV 2 which suggests a different coupling from the usual diffractive reactions. The non-resonant diffractive background is compared with a double-Regge model and the statistical dissociation model.

Production of Massive Muon Pairs by 300-GeV and 400-GeV Protons

We have observed muon pairs with effective masses in the range 7<~Mμμ<~11 GeV/c2 produced by 300- and 400-GeV protons incident on a Cu target at Fermilab. The production cross section per nucleon, dσdMμμ, for 400-GeV incident protons is found to fall from 1 × 10−36 cm2/(GeV/c2) at Mμμ=7.7 GeV/c2 to 2.7 × 10−38 cm2/(GeV/c2) at Mμμ=11.2 GeV/c2. We find that a significant fraction of the observed direct single muons come from high-mass dimuons.

Measurements of Selected psi-prime (3684) Branching Ratios from a Study of Secondary Lepton Pairs

We determine the ratio of the partial decay width for ψ(3684)→μ+μ− to that for the cascade decay ψ(3684)→ψ(3095)+X to be (1.4 ± 0.3)% and, by direct observation of associated charged particles and γ rays, find the ratio of the partial decay width for ψ(3684)→ψ(3095)+π0π0 to that for ψ(3684)→ψ(3095)+π+π− to be 0.64 ± 0.15.

Anti-p p annihilations into four charged mesons from 1.6 to 2.2 gev/c

The following reactions have been analyzed: (1) p¯p→π−π−π+π+; (2) p¯p→π−π+K−K+; (3) p¯p→K−K−K+K+. Cross sections as a function of beam momentum ranging from 1.6 to 2.2 GeVc are presented. The percentage of resonance production in reaction (1) is examined using the maximum-likelihood (ML) method. The channel is dominated by ρππ and ρf production. The percentage of ρf decreases with p¯ momentum, while ρππ appears to increase. ML fits are also made to reaction (2); the reaction is dominated by K*Kπ, ϕππ, and ρKK production. An enhancement is seen in the Q region of the ππK mass spectrum at 1278 MeV, with FWHM (full width at half maximum) of 25 MeV. Six events are consistent with reaction (3). Mass spectra indicate that five events have at least one ϕ meson produced; one of these is a ϕϕ event.

Observation of Vector Meson Production in Inclusive p p Reactions

We have measured cross sections, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, and vector meson polarization for the reactions pp→ ϱ o +anything, pp→ ω +charged particles, and pp → K ∗± + anything at incident laboratory momenta of 12 and 24 GeV/ c . We discuss various consequences of our results as well as possible connections with lepton pair production.

An optical spark-chamber counter experiment at Adone, the Italian colliding electron-positron ring, has succeeded in measuring the cross-section for the process e+e−→p\(\bar p\) near threshold (Ec.m.=2.1 GeV). The result isσ(e+e−→p\(\bar p\))=(0.91±0.22) nb.

We have measured the total inelastic cross section (σinel) and charged-particle multiplicities obtained in pp collisions at 405 GeV/c. The data are from a preliminary 12 000-picture bubble-chamber exposure. We find σinel=32.8±1.0 mb; the low moments of the multiplicity distribution for negative particles are 〈n−〉=3.50±0.07, D−=2.37±0.05, f2−=2.1±0.2, and f3−=0.1±0.9. We also present updated results at 102 GeV/c.
