The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→π+n was measured at 19 photon energies between 300 and 750 MeV in the laboratory frame, for pion angles between 0° and 130° in the c.m. system. The pions were analyzed in angle and momentum with a magnetic spectrometer and detected by a counter telescope. The 0° measurements could be achieved, in spite of the excessive positron rate, owing to a mass-spectrometer arrangement. No direct indication for the electromagnetic excitation of the P11 resonance (1466 MeV) was found. Comparison is made with theoretical calculations of π+ photoproduction.

The differential asymmetry ratio for the process γ+n→p+π− was measured at 90° in the center-of-mass system and for incident photon energies from 352 to 550 MeV. The observed asymmetries are larger than the values predicted from the theory by Berends, Donnachie, and Weaver. A smaller M1- amplitude gives better agreement between the experiment and the theory.

The cross section for γp→π−Δ++(1236), measured at 5, 8, 11, and 16 GeV from nearzero momentum transfer to -1 GeV2 (-2 GeV2 at 16 GeV), rises from small t to a maximum near −t=mπ2, then falls as e12t out to −t≈0.2 GeV2, after which it becomes roughly equal in slope and magnitude to the single π+ photoproduction cross section (e3t). At fixed t, the cross section varies as k−2, where k is the laboratory photon energy. The results do not agree well with the simple vector-dominance model.

We have studied the ratio R=[dσ(γd→π−pp)dt][dσ(γd→π+nn)dt]−1 at 8 and 16 GeV for momentum transfers |t| from about 0.001 to 1.3 GeV2. R is close to unity for |t|<mπ2, but falls very rapidly with increasing |t|, passing through ½ near |t|=0.1 GeV2 and having a minium value of about 13 near |t|=0.4 GeV2; it slowly increases at larger momentum transfers. These results are similar to those obtained in other laboratories at 3.4 and 5 GeV. This implies considerable interference between the isoscalar and isovector photon amplitudes.

Elastic scattering and single-pion production in pp collisions at 6.92 BeVc were studied in the BNL 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections for the different final states are given. The reaction pp→nN1238*(pπ+) with σ=1.9±0.3 mb is analyzed and is in agreement with the modified one-pion-exchange model. Single-pion production can be explained as due mainly to two channels: (a) pp→N1238*(pπ+)n, and (b) pp→p(nπ+) or pp→p(pπ0), where the (nπ+) and (pπ0) pairs are in an I=12 state.

Elastic scattering of p¯ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p¯) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Alternatively, a diffraction model agrees qualitatively with our data and other elastic data at different angles.

We have measured differential cross sections of γ + p → p + η 0 at several energies. The angular distributions show that S 11 production is predominant in the energy range investigated and that the other resonant terms seen in π-production of η are absent or very low. Finally, experimental data are theoretically interpreted and the S 11 parameters deduced.

The electromagnetic form factor of the pion has been determined in the ϱ o resonance region by measuring the absolute cross section of the reaction e + e − → π + π − with the Orsay storage ring. More than 800 pion pairs have been detected. The excitation curve has been fitted with a Breit-Wigner formula which leads to the following values: σ peak = (1.69 ± 0.21) 10 −30 cm 2 ; m ϱ = (770 ± 4) MeV ; Γ ϱ = (111 ± 6) MeV . The partial width of the ϱ o going into e + e − thus obtained is: Γ ϱ → e + e − =(7.36±0.7) keV .

Cross sections for the reactions γp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0 have been measured at squared four-momentum transfer (−t) from 0.005 to 2 GeV2, at photon energies 5, 8, 11, and 16 GeV. For −t>0.2 GeV2 each of the K+ cross sections is about ⅓ of the π+n photoproduction cross section, having nearly the same energy and momentum-transfer dependence. The K+ cross sections fall off at small |t|, however, in contrast to the sharp forward spike seen in π+n; this leads to a disagreement with an SU(3) prediction for −t<0.1 GeV2. The ratio of K+Σ0 to K+Λ cross sections is typically between 0.5 and 1.0.

The reactions γA→π±A* have been studied at four-momentum transfers −t<~0.5 GeV2 for seven elements ranging from hydrogen to lead. Exclusion-principle suppression is clearly visible at small-momentum transfer. Neither the A dependence nor the energy dependence of the cross sections agrees with the predictions of the vector-dominance model. The ratio of π−π+ production requires equal spatial distributions for the protons and neutrons in nuclei. Some K+ data are also presented.

The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. Such dependence is compatible with the data existing both at higher and lower energies. We present results on vector-meson photoproduction via γp→Vp in the LBL-SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a linearly polarized photon beam at 2.8, 4.7, and 9.3 GeV. We find ρ0 production to have the characteristics of a diffractive process, i.e., a cross section decreasing slowly with energy and a differential cross section with slope of ∼ 6.5 GeV−2. Within errors the ρ0 production amplitudes are entirely due to natural-parity exchange. s-channel helicity is conserved to a high degree in the γ→ρ0 transition. We find evidence for small helicity-flip amplitudes for ππ pairs in the ρ0 region. Photoproduction of ω mesons is separated into its natural- (σN) and unnatural- (σU) parity-exchange contributions. The Eγ and t dependence and the spin density matrix of the unnatural-parity-exchange contribution are consistent with a one-pion-exchange process. The natural-parity-exchange part has characteristics similar to ρ0 production. At 9.3 GeV the ratio of σ(ρ0) to σN(ω) is ∼ 7. The slope of the φ differential cross section is ∼ 4.5 GeV−2, smaller than that of ρ0 and ω production. Natural-parity exchange is the main contributor to φ production. No evidence for higher-mass vector mesons is found in ππ, πππ, or KK¯ final states. The s and t dependences of Compton scattering as calculated from ρ, ω, and φ photoproduction using vector-meson dominance agree with experiment, but the predicted Compton cross section is too small by a factor of 2.

The results presented in this paper are obtained from an analysis of bubble-chamber pictures of K−d interactions at an incident K− momentum of 5.5 GeV/c. Generally, the quasitwo-body final states are produced peripherally, with a small backward peak occurring in some of the final states. The final states Σ−ω, Σ−ρ0, and Σ−φ appear to be produced primarily by vector-meson exchange. In the final state Λ(1520)π− the decay distributions of the Λ(1520) hyperon are found to be consistent with a vector-exchagne production process with M2 coupling at the nucleon vertex. The predictions of the independent-quark model and of other symmetry schemes, namely that the forward cross sections for Σ−ρ0, Σ−ω, Σ−φ production be in the ratios 1: 1: 2, are not inconsistent with our experimental values.
