We report an experimental determination of the cross section for e + e − → hadrons from a scan around the Z 0 pole. On the basis of 4350 hadronic events collected over seven energy points between 89.26 GeV and 93.26 GeV we obtain a mass of m z =91.01±0.05±0.05 GeV, and a total decay width of Γ z =2.60±0.13 GeV. In the context of the standard model t these results imply 3.1 ± 0.4 neutrino generations.

Measurements are reported of the differential cross section for the reaction π − +p→ ω +n from threshold to a final-state c.m. momentum P ∗ of 200 MeV /c . The previously reported fall in total cross section σ/P ∗ below about 100 MeV/ c is again seen. The differential cross section remains close to isotropic over the entire range. A paralle experiment on the variation in the elastic differential cross section across the threshold shows evidence of this threshold. The elastic data cover a range of incident moments from 1010 to 1180 MeV/ c in steps of 5 MeV/ c .

A novel form of mass spectrometer has been used to measure the masses, widths, and cross sections of the η, ω, X0(958), and φ mesons near their respective thresholds in the reaction π−+p→missingmass+n. The incident momentum is varied in small steps through the threshold while neutrons of a given momentum are detected near zero degrees. The lower limit of the c.m. momentum P* at which measurements have been made ranges from about 50 MeV/c at the φ to about 30 MeV/c at the η. A somewhat low value for the ω mass, 782.3 ± 0.6 MeV, is found. The width of the X0 is < 1.9 MeV (95% confidence level). All four mesons show evidence of S-wave production, with values of σP* of 21.2 ± 1.8, 0.35 ± 0.03, and 0.29 ± 0.06 μb/(MeV/c) for the η, X0, and φ, respectively. A rapid rise in the ω cross section appears to be modified by a final-state interaction. The effect of this rise can probably be seen in some S11 pion-nucleon phase-shift solutions. Evidence is also presented of a sudden drop in the π+π− mass spectrum just above the threshold for the production of a K+K− pair. The paper includes a comprehensive discussion of the method and of the details of the spectrometer.

The properties of final state photons in multihadronic decays of theZ0 and those of the recoiling hadronic system are discussed and compared with theoretical expectations. The yield of two and three jet events with final state photons is found to be in good agreement with the expectation from a matrix element calculation ofO(ααs. Uncertainties in the interpretation of the theoretical calculation do not yet permit a final assessment of events with just one reconstructed jet. Comparing the rates of two jet events with a photon to those of three jet events in the inclusive multihadronic sample, the strong coupling constant in second order is determined asαs\((M_{Z^0 } )\)=0.122±0.010, taking into account only the statistical and experimental systematic errors. It is found that an abelian model of the strong interaction does not describe the data. The comparison of the total yield and the jet rates with QCD shower programs shows better agreement with the ARIADNE model than with the JETSET model. Both programs are found to describe well the photon properties and the properties of the residual hadronic event.

The OPAL detector at LEP is used to measure the branching ratio of theZ0 into invisible particles by measuring the cross section of single photon events ine+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies near theZ0 resonance. In a data sample of 5.3 pb−1, we observe 73 events with single photons depositing more than 1.5 GeV in the electromagnetic calorimeter, with an expected background of 8±2 events not associated with invisibleZ0 decay. With this data we determine theZ0 invisible width to be 0.50±0.07±0.03 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This corresponds to 3.0±0.4±0.2 light neutrino generations in the Standard Model.

We report a measurement of the exclusive $e^+e^- \to D^{(*)\pm}{D}{}^{*\mp}$ cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy near the $D^{(*)^{\pm}}{D}{}^{*\mp}$ threshold with initial state radiation. A partial reconstruction technique is used to increase the efficiency and to suppress background. The analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and nearby continuum with an integrated luminosity of 547.8 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider.

An analysis of the data collected in 1997 and 1998 with the DELPHI detector at e+e- collision energies close to 183 and 189 GeV was performed in order to extract the hadronic and leptonic fermion-pair cross-sections, as well as the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries and angular distributions. The data are used to put limit on contact interactions between fermions, the exchange of R-parity violating SUSY sneutrinos, Z' bosons and the existence of gravity in extra dimensions.
