The reaction pn→ppπ at 19 GeV/c is studied. It is dominated by the process where the neutron dissociates into the pπ- system and exhibits the characteristic features of diffraction dissociation. The pπ- mass distribution shows a strong peak at 1.3 GeV but is otherwise rather structureless. By comparison with other experiments we find that this peak is neither seen at higher nor at lower energies. The reason why it is not seen in experiments at higher energies seems to be that they suffer from strong experimental limitations. The 1.3 GeV peak is connected with small momentum transfers and an analysis of the moments of the decay angular distributions shows that this peak is a low-spin phenomenon. For larger momentum transfers the lowest moments show an onset already at threshold. By comparison with a pion exchange Deck model we find a substantial baryon exchange contribution for small momentum transfers. This contribution seems to become more pronounced at higher energies.

The inclusive production of Ξ − and Ξ ∗0 (1530) is investigated in K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The inclusive production cross sections are 172 ± 20 μ b and 135 ± 15 μ b for the Ξ − , and 43 ± 7 μ b and 32 ± 5 μ b for the Ξ ∗0 (1530) at 10 and 16 GeV /c , respectively. In the beam momentum range up to 16 GeV/ c , the energy dependence of the cross section for Ξ − production in K − p interactions is similar to Σ − production in π − p interactions. It is, instead, different from the energy behaviour of Σ − production cross sections observed in π − p interactions. The Ξ − and Ξ ∗0 (1530) are both produced more in the forward ( x > 0) than in the backward hemisphere, indicating the presence of hyperon-exchange processes.

The energy dependence of the K L 0 -K S 0 transmission regeneration amplitudes on deuterons and neutrons in the momentum region 10–50 GeV/ c is determined. The moduli of the modified transmission amplitudes are momentum dependent. These dependences are fitted by the expression A j p − nj , where A j and n j ( j = d, n) are constants: A d =2.88 ±0.04 mb , n d =0.546±0.030, for deuterons , A n =1.97 ±0.14 mb , n n =0.530±0.019, for neutrons , The amplitude phases do not depend on the kaon momentum and are equal to ϕ d = (−130.9 ± 2.7)° ϕ n = (−132.3 ± 1.7)°. The mean value of the ratio of the total cross-section differences for K 0 and K 0 interactions with neutrons and protons is determined. The residues of the partial ω and ϱ amplitudes, which contribute to the kaon-nucleon interaction amplitudes, are also obtained.

A sample of 56 909 events of the reaction π − p→K + K − n at 10 GeV/ c has been measured in the Omega Spectrometer at CERN. In the K + K − system, besides production of mesons in the S ∗ /φ, f 0 / A 2 , g /ω ∗ and h regions we observe a new structure at 2.20 GeV with a width of the order of 200 MeV.

Cross-section values or upper limits are presented for twenty-five two-body hypercharge-exchange reactions in K − p and π + p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The 16 GeV/ c results are compared with some predictions of line-reversal plus exchange-degenerate Regge poles, of SU(3) and of the additive quark model. Agreement is found in all cases.

We report on the experimental results obtained at the ISR for the η particle production at 90° and √ s = 30.6 and 53.2 GeV. We determine the invariant cross section and the p t distribution in the interval 1 ⩽ p t ⩽ 5 GeV/ c . We find that the p t distribution has the same shape of the π 0 production and differ from it by a constant factor R 90° = 0.5 ± 0.07.

We present results on a number of non-diffractive two-body channels contributing to reactions K + p→K 0 π + p and K + p→K + π − π + p. The data come from an exposure of the Mirabelle bubble chamber to an r.f. separated K + beam of 32 GeV/ c at the Serpukhov accelerator. Total cross sections are given for the final states K ∗+ (890) p , K ∗+ (1420) p , K 0 Δ ++ (1232), K ∗+ (890) p , Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1420) Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1780) Δ ++ (1232) and K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ (1950) . The differential cross sections are given for all channels with sufficient statistics. The energy dependence of the total and differential cross sections is studied.

Polarized cross sections for the reaction π − p → η n have been measured at 12 incident momenta between 1171 and 2267 MeV/ c . The data show that the polarization is small in the forward direction and there is a general trend for it to be large and positive near cos θ ∗ = 0.2 . These are the first published results on polarization effects in this channel in the resonance region. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis has been performed and the couplings and branching fractions for decays of nucleon resonances to this channel are presented.
