The invariant cross sections for π 0 meson production in alpha—alpha and alpha—proton collisions at the ISR were meas- ured up to transverse momenta of 7 GeV c and 8 GeV c , respectively. These measurements are compared with π 0 production in pp collisions at the same values of s / nucleon, and the variation of the nuclear A -dependence with p T is determined.

We have studied the topologies of hadronic events in e + e - annihilation data taken in the region of the upsilon resonances with the non-magnetic CUSB detectors at CESR. Using a thrust-like variable we compare the decay of ϒ, ϒ′ and ϒPrime; find for ϒ″ a significant excess of high thrust events, which we interpret as evidence for electric dipole transitions.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

We have observed ϱ 0 production in e + e − annihilation to hadrons at high energies. The differential cross section at a centre of mass energy W , of 34 GeV, is presented. In the range 0.2< x < 0.7, we measure 0.33 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.), 0.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 and 0.22 ± 0.02 ± 0.05 ϱ 0 /event at W = 14, 22 and 34 GeV respectively.

The elastic electron-neutron cross section has been measured at four-momentum transfers squared (Q2) of 2.5, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 (GeV/c)2 with use of a deuterium target and detection of the scattered electrons at 10°. The ratio of neutron to proton elastic cross sections decreases with Q2. At high Q2 this trend is inconsistent with the dipole law, form-factor scaling, and many vector dominance models, although it is consistent with some parton models.

Hadronic events obtained with the CELLO detector at PETRA were compared with first-order QCD predictions using two different models for the fragmentation of quarks and gluons, the Hoyer model and the Lund model. Both models are in reasonable agreement with the data, although they do not completely reproduce the details of many distributions. Several methods have been applied to determine the strong coupling constant α S . Although within one model the value of α S varies by 20% among the different methods, the values determined using the Lund model are 30% or more larger (depending on the method used) than the values determined with the Hoyer model. Our results using the Hoyer model are in agreement with previous results based on this approach.

We present data on proton-proton collisions, obtained at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, in which two roughly back-to-back π 0 's of high transverse momentum ( p T ) were produced. The angular distribution of the dipion axis relative to the collision axis is found to be independent of both the effective mass m of the dipion system and the centre-of-mass energy √ s of the proton-proton collision. The cross-sections d σ d m at the values of √ s satisfy a scaling law of the form d σ d m = G(x) m n , where x = m(π 0 , π 0 )//trs and n = 6.5 ± 0.5 . We show from our data that the leading π 0 carries most of the momentum of the scattered parton. Given this fact, the axis of the dipion system follows closely the direction of the scattered constituents, and we exploit this to determine the angular dependence of the hard-scattering subprocess. We also compare our data with the lowest order QCD predictions using structure functions as determined in deep-inelastic scattering and fragmentation functions from electron-positron annihilation.

We report on a measurement of the process e + e − →e + e − + hadrons, where one of the scattered electrons is detected at large angles, with an average Q 2 of 23 GeV. The results are analysed in terms of the photon structure function F 2 and are compared with QCD predictions.
