The nuclear response of a medium-mass nucleus (136Xe) to electromagnetic excitation in a near-relativistic heavy-ion collision was investigated in the reaction136Xe(0.7A GeV)+Pb. From an exclusive measurement of the neutron decay of the excited Xe136 projectiles, strong excitations of giant resonances and, in particular, of the double isovector giant dipole resonance were identified. A resonance energy of 28.3±0.7 MeV, a width of 6.3±1.6 MeV, and a total cross section of 215±50 mb were found for the double giant dipole resonance.
CROSS SECTION FOR THE DOUBLE GIANT DIPOLE RESONANCE IN XE136.
We present results from an experimental study of reabsorption effects in subthreshold π0 production in the reaction Xe129+197Au at 44 MeV/nucleon. Within the picture of pion generation in nucleon-nucleon scattering we deduce, from our data and from a comparison with the systematics of production cross sections available for lighter reaction systems, information on the π0 absorption length in nuclear matter. For the π0 kinetic-energy range ≃5–100 MeV the energy-averaged λabs and its momentum dependence are obtained, and compared with optical-model calculations.

We have measured energy-differential cross sections for π 0 production in 36 Ar+ 197 Au collisions at 95 MeV/u. From an analysis of spectral features due to pion final-state interactions we have estimated the cross section of the capture process Δ + N → N + N in the center-of-mass energy range s ≃2.05−2.25 GeV . Within the frame of BUU calculations, our results support the extension of the detailed-balance principle to broad-width resonances.

The production ofπ0 andη mesons has been studied in the reactions20Ne +Al at 350 MeV/u and40Ar + Ca at 1.0 GeV/u. Rapidity distributions and transverse momentum spectra have been measured and are compared to thermal distributions.

We report on a measurement of subthreshold η and π0 mesons in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV. We find that the ratio of the η to π0 meson-production cross section is more than a factor of 20 smaller than the one expected from threshold-energy scaling of meson production. In addition, the multiplicity of high mt π0 increases faster with the centrality of the reaction than the multiplicity of the bulk of π0 mesons. This behavior is explained by the rescattering of π mesons in nuclear matter at the origin of most energetic particles.

The neutral π0 and η mesons are studied in 197Au−197Au collisions at an incident energy of 800AMeV, substantially below the threshold for η production in N−N collisions. While the gross π0 multiplicity increases almost linearly with the number of participant nucleons, the multiplicities of η and hard π0 mesons show a stronger than linear dependence. The nonlinearity is governed by the average transverse-mass excess 〈mt〉−(s−2mN) of the mesons and is insensitive to their final-state interaction in the nuclear medium.

In a joint effort the CERES/NA45 and TAPS collaborations have measured low-mass electron pairs in p–Be and p–Au collisions at 450 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. In the range covered up to ≈ 1.5 GeV/c2 the mass spectra from p–Be and p–Au collisions are well explained by electron pairs from decays of neutral mesons. For p–Au our result is new. For p–Be, the simultaneously measured electron pair inclusive pair spectrum in which instrumental uncertainties are highly reduced. We confirm the earlier finding of HELIOS-1 with significantly reduced systematic uncertainties of 23% in the mass range below 450 MeV/c2, and of 28% in the mass range above 750 MeV/c2 at 90% confidence limit. Any unconventional source of electron pairs is limited by these error margins as the percentage fraction of the hadronic contribution.

We present the analysis of the inclusive $K^{0}$ production in p+p and p+Nb collisions measured with the HADES detector at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5 GeV. Data are compared to the GiBUU transport model. The data suggest the presence of a repulsive momentum-dependent kaon potential as predicted by the Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). For the kaon at rest and at normal nuclear density, the ChPT potential amounts to $\approx 35$ MeV. A detailed tuning of the kaon production cross sections implemented in the model has been carried out to reproduce the experimental data measured in p+p collisions. The uncertainties in the parameters of the model were examined with respect to the sensitivity of the experimental results from p+Nb collisions to the in-medium kaon potential.

About 10 μs after the Big Bang, the universe was filled—in addition to photons and leptons—with strong-interaction matter consisting of quarks and gluons, which transitioned to hadrons at temperatures close to kT = 150 MeV and densities several times higher than those found in nuclei. This quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter can be created in the laboratory as a transient state by colliding heavy ions at relativistic energies. The different phases in which QCD matter may exist depend for example on temperature, pressure or baryochemical potential, and can be probed by studying the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Electron–positron pairs emerge from the decay of virtual photons, which immediately decouple from the strong interaction, and thus provide information about the properties of QCD matter at various stages. Here, we report the observation of virtual photon emission from baryon-rich QCD matter. The spectral distribution of the electron–positron pairs is nearly exponential, providing evidence for a source of temperature in excess of 70 MeV with constituents whose properties have been modified, thus reflecting peculiarities of strong-interaction QCD matter. Its bulk properties are similar to the dense matter formed in the final state of a neutron star merger, as apparent from recent multimessenger observation.
