The elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei has been studied at the National Aeronautics Space Administration Space Radiation Effects Laboratory (SREL) synchrocyclotron. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He4 nuclei. The p−p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p−D, p−He3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

The production of ψ(3.1) mesons is reported for the reactions π−+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 200 GeV, and p+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 240 GeV. For ψ production, distributions in x≡PLPbeam and P⊥ are given. For x>~0.5, the ratio of the ψ production cross sections in iron for pions to that for protons is found to be 7.4±2.0.

We have measured the electromagnetic form factor of the charged pion by direct scattering of 100-GeV/c π− from stationary electrons in a liquid-hydrogen target at Fermilab. The deviations from the pointlike pion-scattering cross section may be characterized by a root-mean-square charge radius for the pion of 〈rπ2〉12=0.56±0.04 F.

Results are given for Li6, Be, C, A1, Cu, and Ta at 70°, 90°, 118°, 137° and 160° for detected protons from 0.4 to 1.4 GeV/c. Some angular distributions are given over a wider selection of angles. An experiment to measure the electromagnetic form factor of the negative π meson has been carried out at Fermilab by elastically scattering 100-GeV/c pions from the atomic electrons in a liquid-hydrogen target. We find that the elastic differential scattering cross section is characterized by a root-mean-square pion charge radius of 0.56±0.04 fm. This paper described our experimental design, measurement resolutions, event triggering logic, event reconstruction, experimental corrections, and form-factor results.
