A nonzero difference of the analyzing powers due to charge symmetry breaking has been measured with high precision in np elastic scattering at a neutron beam energy of 347 MeV. The neutron beam and proton target were alternately polarized for the measurements of An and Ap. A mirror-symmetric detection system was used to cancel geometry-related systematic errors. From fits of the measured asymmetry angular distributions over the range of 53.4°<~θcm<~86.9°, the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the analyzing powers was determined to be 0.438°±0.054°(stat.)±0.051°(syst.) in the center-of-mass system. Using the experimentally determined slope of the analyzing power dA/dθ=(−1.35±0.05)×10−2 deg−1 (c.m.), this is equivalent to ΔA≡An−Ap=[59±7(stat.)±7(syst.)±2(syst.)]×10−4. The shape of ΔA(θ) in the vicinity of the zero-crossing angle has also been extracted. Predictions of nucleon-nucleon interaction models based on meson exchange agree well with the results.
(C=N) or (C=P) stands for polarized beam or target.
We have measured angular distributions of differential cross sections and analyzing powers ( A y ) of the reaction p p → d π + at six incident proton energies between 1.3 and 2.4 GeV. They confirm the rapid variations at √ s = 2.65 GeV suggested by earlier experiments. Deviations from a monotonic behavior are also found in the excitation functions of the differential cross section at t = 0 or where Θ π + (c.m.) = 0°. Structures clearly appear at √ s = 2.4 and 2.65 GeV, in some coefficients of the associated Legendre function expansions of A y .

A proton-proton bremsstrahlung experiment has been carried out at TRIUMF using a 280-MeV polarized proton beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. All three outgoing particles were detected: the higher-energy proton in a magnetic spectrometer, the lower-energy proton with plastic scintillators, and the photon in lead-glass Cherenkov detectors. The experiment shows the first unambiguous evidence for off-shell effects in the free nucleon-nucleon interaction, in that the analyzing powers disagree strongly with the predictions of the soft-photon approximation (which incorporates only on-shell information) but are consistent with the results of calculations using the Bonn and Paris potentials.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.
The beam analysing power at incident kinetic energy 220 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.015 and a scalar error of 3.5 PCT.
The beam analysing power at incident kinetic energy 325 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.018 and a scalar error of 3.1 PCT.
The beam analysing power at incident kinetic energy 425 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.022 and a scalar error of 3.3 PCT.
The effect of isospin-violating, charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) terms in the np interaction has been observed at TRIUMF by measuring the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the neutron and proton analyzing powers, An and Ap, at a neutron energy of 477 MeV. The scattering asymmetries were measured with a neutron beam incident on a polarizable proton target. To reduce systematic errors, interleaved measurements of An and Ap were made using the same beam and target (apart from their respective polarization states). Neutrons and protons were detected in coincidence in the center-of-mass angle range from 59°–80°. The difference in zero-crossing angles was 0.340°±0.162° (±0.058°), which yields ΔA≡An-Ap=0.0047±0.0022 (±0.0008) using dA/dθc.m.=−0.01382 deg−1. The second errors represent systematic effects. This result is in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations which include CSB effects due to the np mass difference in π, ρ, and 2π exchange, electromagnetic coupling of the neutron anomalous magnetic moment to the proton current, ρ-ω-meson mixing, and short- and medium-range effects of the up- and down-quark mass difference.

The results of the study of the π + p→K + ∑ + (1) and π + p→K + ∑ + (1385) (2) reactions at 12 GeV/ c are presented. The differential cross sections d σ /d t in| t min |<| t |<0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 momentum transfer range are measured. The ∑ + polarisation for | t |<0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 for reaction (1) is defined. Binary reactions (1) and (2) were selected by analyzing the missing mass spectra for the forward emitted fast K + meson. The total cross sections in the studied momentum transfer range are 20.2±2.4 μ b and 7.3±1.1 μ b for the reactions (1) and (2) respectively. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the Regge models which take into account rescattering and secondary singularities.

We measured the differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c, with both initial spins oriented normal to the scattering plane. The analyzing power A shows significant structure with a large broad peak reaching about 24% near P⊥2=1.6 (GeV/c)2. The spin-spin correlation parameter Ann exhibits more dramatic structure, with a small but very sharp peak rising rapidly to about 13% at 90°c.m.. This sharp peak may be caused by particle-identity effects.

The Wolfenstein parameters D, R, and A and the polarization parameter P have been measured for p−p elastic scattering at 312, 392, 493, and 575 MeV kinetic energy. The center-of-mass angular range observed was from 3° to 33°. The experiment was performed at SIN, using a polarized proton beam. These data significantly improve the determination of I=1 phase shifts.

Measurement was made of dσdt for n↑+p↑→n+p at P⊥2=0.8 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2 at 6 GeV/c. The 6-GeV/c 53%-polarized neutrons from the 12-GeV/c polarized deuteron beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchroton were scattered from our 75%-polarized proton target. Both spins were oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. We found large unexpected spin-spin effects in n−p elastic scattering which are quite different from the p−p spin-spin effects.

We measured dσdt for p↑+p↑→p+p from P⊥2=4.50 to 5.09 (GeV/c)2 at 11.75 GeV/c. We used a 59%-polarized proton beam and a 71%-polarized proton target with both spins oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. In these large-P⊥2 hard-scattering events, spin effects are very large and the ratio (dσdt)↑↑:(dσdt)↑↓ grows rapidly with increasing P⊥2, reaching a value of 4 at 90° (c.m.). Thus, hard elastic scattering, which is presumably due to the direct scattering of the protons' constituents, may only occur when the two incident protons' spins are parallel.
