The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions.

We show that Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons on targets of Be and Cu have significant polarizations (15–20%). These polarizations persist at values of pt≈2 GeV/c and a wide range of xF. The polarizations from the Cu target are consistently less than from Be. The average ratio of the Σ+ polarization from Cu to that from Be is 0.68±0.08.

A nonzero difference of the analyzing powers due to charge symmetry breaking has been measured with high precision in np elastic scattering at a neutron beam energy of 347 MeV. The neutron beam and proton target were alternately polarized for the measurements of An and Ap. A mirror-symmetric detection system was used to cancel geometry-related systematic errors. From fits of the measured asymmetry angular distributions over the range of 53.4°<~θcm<~86.9°, the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the analyzing powers was determined to be 0.438°±0.054°(stat.)±0.051°(syst.) in the center-of-mass system. Using the experimentally determined slope of the analyzing power dA/dθ=(−1.35±0.05)×10−2 deg−1 (c.m.), this is equivalent to ΔA≡An−Ap=[59±7(stat.)±7(syst.)±2(syst.)]×10−4. The shape of ΔA(θ) in the vicinity of the zero-crossing angle has also been extracted. Predictions of nucleon-nucleon interaction models based on meson exchange agree well with the results.
(C=N) or (C=P) stands for polarized beam or target.
The angles at which the n-p elastic scattering neutron analyzing power A00n0 crosses zero were measured with precision at four TRIUMF energies below 300 MeV. The mean interaction energies are also measured with greater precision than in previous experiments. The results are En=175.26±0.23 MeV, θzx=98.48°±0.28°; En=203.15±0.20 MeV, θzx=91.31°±0.18°; En=217.24±0.19 MeV, θzx=87.64°±0.18°; and En=261.00±0.16 MeV, θzx=80.18°±0.19°. After correction for charge symmetry breaking effects, the energy where the averaged neutron-proton analyzing power crosses zero at θzx=90° is found to be En=206.8±0.6 MeV. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

A sample of Z0→τ+τ− events observed in the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is analysed to measure the τ polarisation in the exclusive decay channels\(ev\bar v\),\(\mu v\bar v\), πν, ρν and a1ν. The τ polarisation is also measured with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision than the use of the exclusive decay modes. The results have been combined with those published on the 1990 data. A measurement of the τ polarisation as a function of production angle yields the values for the mean τ polarisation 〈P〉τ=−0.148±0.022 and for the Z0 polarisationPZ=−0.136±0.027. These results are used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for taus\(\bar v_\tau/\bar a_\tau= 0.074 \pm 0.011\), and for electrons\(\bar v_e /\bar a_e= 0.068 \pm 0.014\), compatible with e-τ universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for leptons\(\bar v_l /\bar a_l= 0.072 \pm 0.008\) is obtained, implying a value of the effective weak mixing angle sin2θefflept=0.2320±0.0021.
Results are for both TAU+ and TAU- decay.
The systematic error contains a systematic error of 0.003 common to all channels.

We have measured angular distributions of differential cross sections and analyzing powers ( A y ) of the reaction p p → d π + at six incident proton energies between 1.3 and 2.4 GeV. They confirm the rapid variations at √ s = 2.65 GeV suggested by earlier experiments. Deviations from a monotonic behavior are also found in the excitation functions of the differential cross section at t = 0 or where Θ π + (c.m.) = 0°. Structures clearly appear at √ s = 2.4 and 2.65 GeV, in some coefficients of the associated Legendre function expansions of A y .

We have measured the polarization of D*, the energy dependence of the polarization, and the spin-density matrix of D* in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV using the Time Projection Chamber detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. In 147 pb−1 of data we see no strong evidence for polarization, alignment, or final-state interactions in this fragmentation process.

We measured the analyzing power A out to P⊥2=7.1 (GeV/c)2 with high precision by scattering a 24-GeV/c unpolarized proton beam from the new University of Michigan polarized proton target; the target’s 1-W cooling power allowed a beam intensity of more than 2×1011 protons per pulse. This high beam intensity together with the unexpectedly high average target polarization of about 85% allowed unusually accurate measurements of A at large P⊥2. These precise data confirmed that the one-spin parameter A is nonzero and indeed quite large at high P⊥2; most theoretical models predict that A should go to zero.

A proton-proton bremsstrahlung experiment has been carried out at TRIUMF using a 280-MeV polarized proton beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. All three outgoing particles were detected: the higher-energy proton in a magnetic spectrometer, the lower-energy proton with plastic scintillators, and the photon in lead-glass Cherenkov detectors. The experiment shows the first unambiguous evidence for off-shell effects in the free nucleon-nucleon interaction, in that the analyzing powers disagree strongly with the predictions of the soft-photon approximation (which incorporates only on-shell information) but are consistent with the results of calculations using the Bonn and Paris potentials.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

The effect of isospin-violating, charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) terms in the np interaction has been observed at TRIUMF by measuring the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the neutron and proton analyzing powers, An and Ap, at a neutron energy of 477 MeV. The scattering asymmetries were measured with a neutron beam incident on a polarizable proton target. To reduce systematic errors, interleaved measurements of An and Ap were made using the same beam and target (apart from their respective polarization states). Neutrons and protons were detected in coincidence in the center-of-mass angle range from 59°–80°. The difference in zero-crossing angles was 0.340°±0.162° (±0.058°), which yields ΔA≡An-Ap=0.0047±0.0022 (±0.0008) using dA/dθc.m.=−0.01382 deg−1. The second errors represent systematic effects. This result is in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations which include CSB effects due to the np mass difference in π, ρ, and 2π exchange, electromagnetic coupling of the neutron anomalous magnetic moment to the proton current, ρ-ω-meson mixing, and short- and medium-range effects of the up- and down-quark mass difference.

Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.

We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in medium-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the 18.5-GeV/c Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron polarized-proton beam. We found sharp dips in both A and Ann, which occur at different P⊥2 values. The unexpected sharp structure in the spin-spin force occurs near P⊥2=2.3 (GeV/c)2 where the elastic cross section has no apparent structure.

We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann, in large-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the polarized-proton beam at the Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron. We also used our polarimeter to measure A at small P⊥2 at 13 GeV with good precision and found some deviation from the expected 1Plab behavior. At 18.5 GeV/c we found Ann=(−2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2. Comparison with lower-energy data from the Argonne Zero-Gradient Synchrotron shows a sharp and surprising energy dependence for Ann at large P⊥2.

An experiment resulting in the first measurement of the isospin-mixing, charge-symmetry-violating component of the n−p interaction has been performed. The experiment determined the difference in the angles of the zero crossing of the neutron and proton analyzing powers An and Ap at 477 MeV. In terms of the laboratory scattering angle of the neutron, the measured difference is θ0n(An)−θ0n(Ap)=+0.13° ±0.06° (±0.03°), where the second error is a worst-case estimate of systematic error. The resulting difference in the analyzing powers at the zero-crossing angle is An−Ap=+0.0037 ±0.0017 (±0.0008).

The spin analyzing power A in 28-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at P⊥2=6.5 (GeV/c)2 using a polarized proton target and a high-intensity unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Using the new Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron polarized proton beam and our polarized proton target, we measured the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in 16.5-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering. We found an Ann of (6.1±3.0)% at P⊥2=2.2 (GeV/c)2. We also measured the analyzing power A in two independent ways, providing a good test of possible experimental errors. Comparing our new data with 12-GeV Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron data shows no evidence for strong energy dependence in Ann in this medium-P⊥2 region.

The analyzing power A in 28-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured with a polarized proton target and a high-intensity unpolarized proton beam at the Brook-haven National Laboratory alternating-gradient synchrotron. The P⊥2 range of 2.85 to 5.95 (GeV/c)2 was covered with good precision. A small dip of about -3.5% was found near P⊥2=3.5 (GeV/c)2 where a 24-GeV/c CERN experiment had reported a deep dip of about -16% with large errors. In the previously unexplored large-P⊥2 region near 6 (GeV/c)2 these new large-error points suggest that A may be rising.

We measured the differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c, with both initial spins oriented normal to the scattering plane. The analyzing power A shows significant structure with a large broad peak reaching about 24% near P⊥2=1.6 (GeV/c)2. The spin-spin correlation parameter Ann exhibits more dramatic structure, with a small but very sharp peak rising rapidly to about 13% at 90°c.m.. This sharp peak may be caused by particle-identity effects.

The energy dependence of the spin-parallel and spin-antiparallel cross sections for p↑+p↑→p+p at 90°c.m. was measured for beam momenta between 6 and 12.75 GeV/c. The ratio (dσdt)parallel:(dσdt)antiparallel at 90° is about 1.2 up to 8 GeV/c and then increases rapidly to a value of almost 4 near 11 GeV/c. Our data indicate that this ratio may depend only on the variable P⊥2, and suggests that the ratio may reach a limiting value of about 4 for large P⊥2.

Measurement was made of dσdt for n↑+p↑→n+p at P⊥2=0.8 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2 at 6 GeV/c. The 6-GeV/c 53%-polarized neutrons from the 12-GeV/c polarized deuteron beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchroton were scattered from our 75%-polarized proton target. Both spins were oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. We found large unexpected spin-spin effects in n−p elastic scattering which are quite different from the p−p spin-spin effects.

We measured dσdt for p↑+p↑→p+p from P⊥2=4.50 to 5.09 (GeV/c)2 at 11.75 GeV/c. We used a 59%-polarized proton beam and a 71%-polarized proton target with both spins oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. In these large-P⊥2 hard-scattering events, spin effects are very large and the ratio (dσdt)↑↑:(dσdt)↑↓ grows rapidly with increasing P⊥2, reaching a value of 4 at 90° (c.m.). Thus, hard elastic scattering, which is presumably due to the direct scattering of the protons' constituents, may only occur when the two incident protons' spins are parallel.

The differential elastic p−p scattering cross section was measured at 6 GeV/c at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron in the range P⊥2=0.60−1.0 (GeV/c)2 using a 65% polarized target and a 75% polarized proton beam of intensity 3 × 109 protons/pulse. The polarization of the recoil proton was simultaneously measured with a well calibrated carbon-target polarimeter. All three polarizations were measured perpendicular to the horizontal scattering plane. Our results indicate that P and T invariance are both obeyed to good precision even at our largest P⊥2. We measured dσdt for p+p→p+p at 11.75 GeV/c using the zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized-proton beam and a 65% polarized-proton target. We obtained the spin-orbit asymmetry parameter A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Cm out to P⊥2=4.2 (GeV/c)2. We found that A drops smoothly towards zero, but that Cnn increases abruptly near P⊥2=3.6 (GeV/c)2, where the exp(−1.4P⊥2) component of elastic scattering becomes dominant. This suggests that large-P⊥2 "hard" elastic scattering may occur mostly when the two proton spins are parallel.
