Production of pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons has been studied in e + e − annihilations at 12 and 30 GeV centre of mass energy using time of flight techniques. The fractional yield of charged kaons and baryons appears to rise with outgoing particle momentum. At our highest energy at least 40% of e + e − annihilations into hadrons are estimated to contain baryons.

Forward $K^*$+ (892) Production in $K^+ p \to \pi^+ K^0_S p$ at 12.7-{GeV}/$c$

Inspire Record 154321 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.34347

We have measured 618 K + p → π + K S 0 p events at 12.7 GeV/ c incident lab momentum, mass range 790 ⩽ m π + K s 0 ⩽ 990 MeV and t range 0.01 ⩽ − t ⩽ 0.60 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The π + K S 0 mass spectrum is dominated by the K ∗+ (892) resonance and a Breit-Wigner fit yields a mass m = 893.5 ± 1.1 MeV and a width Γ = 33.2 ± 4.1 MeV which is much narrower than measured hitherto. The t distribution of K ∗+ (892) events shows a dip in the forward direction and an exponential fall off thereafter, consistent with dominance of helicity flip amplitudes. The spin density matrix is almost saturated by ρ 11 and ρ 1−1 which are very close to their maximum allowed value of 1 2 throughout the measured t range except in the very forward direction where ρ 00 and Re ρ 10 deviate from zero. Natural parity exchanges, therefore, dominate with unnatural parity exchanges being restricted to a small region in the forward direction. A Regge pole analysis of the differential cross sections of the present measurement in conjunction with previously measured total cross sections supports the f-coupled-pomeron hypothesis.

$K^0$ Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilations at 30-{GeV} Center-of-mass Energy

Phys.Lett.B 94 (1980) 91-95, 1980.
Inspire Record 153341 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27173

Inclusive K 0 -production has been measured in e + e - annihilation at a center of mass energy of about W = 30 GeV. The ratio of K 0 + K 0 production to μ + μ - production is R K 0 = 5.6 ± 1.1 (statist. error) ± 0.8 (system.error) This value is about a factor of three higher than R K 0 at W = 7 GeV. The cross sections ( s / β ) d σ /d x is consistent with a scaling behaviour.

Comparison of e+ e- Annihilation with QCD and Determination of the Strong Coupling Constant

Inspire Record 153511 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.5489

We have analyzed 1113 events of the reaction e + e − → hadrons at CM energies of 12 and 30 GeV in order to make a detailed comparison with QCD. Perturbative effects can be well separated from effects depending on the quark and gluon fragmentation parameters to yield a reliable measurement of the coupling constant α S . At 30 GeV, the result is α S = 0.17 ± 0.02 (statistical) ± 0.03 (systematic). QCD model predictions, using the fragmentation parameters determined along with α S , agree with both gross properties of the final states and with detailed features of the three-jet states.

We have measured the reactions e + e − → e + e − → μ + μ − and e + e − → γγ at c.m. energies between 12 and 31.6 GeV. Excellent agreement with the predictions of QED has been found, resulting in cut off parameters Λ + > 112 GeV and Λ − > 139 GeV for the first process and Λ + > 34 GeV and Λ − > 42 GeV (95% c.1.) for the last one. A limit on the Weinberg angle of sin 2 θ W < 0.55 (95% c.1.) has been obtained.

Photoproduction of $K^+ K^-$ Pairs on Hydrogen at Photon Energies of 20-{GeV} to 36-{GeV}

The reaction γ p→K + K − p has been investigated with photons in the energy range of 20< E γ <36 GeV and with K + K − pairs in the mass range of M K + K − <2.0 GeV. The production of the φ(1019) contributes with a cross section σ ( γ p → φ p) × BR( φ →K + K − ) = 240±6 nb with an additional systematic error of ±20 nb. In the higher mass range of 1.05< M K + K − <2.0 GeV the production of K + K − pairs yields a cross section σ ( γ p→K + K − p) = 160±8 nb with an additional systematic error of +40 −30 nb.

Diffraction Dissociation, Resonances and Deck Mechanism in the $K \omega$ Systems of the Reactions $K^+^- p \to$ ($K^+^- \omega$) $p$

A study is presented of the reactions K + p→(K + ω )p at 8.25 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p→(K − ω )p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c and comparison is made with K + results at 10 GeV/ c and K − at 7.3 GeV/ c . The (K + ω) and (K − ω) mass spectra both present a strong enhancement very near threshold, while a second peak at ∼1.7 GeV is evident only with incident K − at the lower energies. The threshold peak has very weak energy dependence and is mostly due to the 1 + S state which is produced conserving s -channel helicity. It is suggested that this is another decay mode of the resonance Q 1 (1290) known to decay mainly into Kϱ. The ratio of the Q 1 coupling constants to the Kω and Kϱ decay channels, R ω = g K ω 2 / g K ϱ 2 is determined to be 0.21±0.04. The enhancement at 1.7 GeV is predominantly, but not exclusively, due to the 2 − state. While the K + and K − induced reactions give basically similar results, small differences are observed that can be qualitatively explained in the framework of the Deck model.

MEASUREMENT OF PI- P ---> PI- PI+ N NEAR THRESHOLD AND CHIRAL SYMMETRY BREAKING

d2σdΩdT for π+ mesons produced in π−p→π−π+n was measured at seven incident energies between 203 and 357 MeV and the integrated reaction cross section was calculated. The matrix element, when extrapolated to threshold and compared with soft-pion calculations, determined the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ=0.05±0.26, which is consistent with the Weinberg Lagrangian. The large hard-pion contributions at 203 MeV demonstrated the absolute necessity for comparing at threshold.

Inclusive Production of Nonstrange Resonances in High-Energy $\nu p$ Charged Current Interactions

Berge, J.P. ; Bogert, D.V. ; Endorf, R.J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 22 (1980) 1043, 1980.
Inspire Record 144267 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24174

We have examined the inclusive production of nonstrange particle resonances in νp interactions using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. A sample of 2437 charged-current events with visible longitudinal momentum greater than 10 GeV/c was obtained. The ρ0 and Δ++(1232) are seen. An overall rate of 0.21±0.04 ρ0 per event is found. For five-prong events, the rate is 0.44±0.08 ρ0 per event. The ρ0Z distribution falls rapidly for Z greater than 0.4. The production of Δ++ is seen clearly in events with an identified proton. No evidence is seen for Δ0 production. An upper limit of 0.34 is placed on the ratio of ηπ0 (90% confidence level).
