Using the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections for the production of D+, D0 and Ds+ mesons in e+e- annihilations at thirteen center-of-mass energies between 3.97 and 4.26 GeV. Exclusive cross sections are presented for final states consisting of two charm mesons (DD, D*D, D*D*, Ds+Ds-, Ds*+Ds-, and Ds*+Ds*-) and for processes in which the charm-meson pair is accompanied by a pion. No enhancement in any final state is observed at the energy of the Y(4260).

Using the CLEO III detector, we measure absolute cross sections for e+e- --> hadrons at seven center-of-mass energies between 6.964 and 10.538 GeV. The values of R, the ratio of hadronic and muon pair production cross sections, are determined within 2% total r.m.s. uncertainty.
Measured values of R as a function of CM energy. The first DSYS error is the correlated uncertainty and the second is the uncorrelated.
We have updated our measurement of the cross section for e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons, our publication "Measurement of sigma(e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons) at E_{c.m.} = 3773 MeV", arXiv:hep-ex/0512038, Phys.Rev.Lett.96, 092002 (2006). Simultaneous with this arXiv update, we have published an erratum in Phys.Rev.Lett.104, 159901 (2010). There, and in this update, we have corrected a mistake in the computation of the error on the difference of the cross sections for e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons and e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> DDbar. We have also used a more recent CLEO measurement of cross section for e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> DDbar. From this, we obtain an upper limit on the branching fraction for psi(3770) -> non-DDbar of 9% at 90% confidence level.

Using 20.7 pb^-1 of e+e- annihilation data taken at sqrt{s} = 3.671 GeV with the CLEO-c detector, precision measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the charged pion, charged kaon, and proton have been made for timelike momentum transfer of |Q^2| = 13.48 GeV^2 by the reaction e+e- to h+h-. The measurements are the first ever with identified pions and kaons of |Q^2| > 4 GeV^2, with the results F_pi(13.48 GeV^2) = 0.075+-0.008(stat)+-0.005(syst) and F_K(13.48 GeV^2) = 0.063+-0.004(stat)+-0.001(syst). The result for the proton, assuming G^p_E = G^p_M, is G^p_M(13.48 GeV^2) = 0.014+-0.002(stat)+-0.001(syst), which is in agreement with earlier results.

We describe a search for psi(3770) decay to two-body non-DDbar final states in e+e- data produced by the CESR collider and analyzed with the CLEO-c detector. Vector-pseudoscalar production of Rho0Pi0, Rho+Pi-, OmegaPi0, PhiPi0, RhoEta, OmegaEta, PhiEta, RhoEtaPrime, OmegaEtaPrime, PhiEtaPrime, Kstar0 K0bar, and Kstar+K- is studied along with that of BOnePi (BOne0Pi0 and BOne+Pi-) and Pi+Pi-Pi0. A statistically significant signal is found for PhiEta, at an excess cross section of (2.4 +- 0.6) pb [Gamma_{PhiEta} (psi(3770)) =(74 +- 16)Mev], and a suggestive suppression of Pi+Pi-Pi0 and RhoPi. We conclude with form factor determinations for OmegaPi0, RhoEta, and RhoEtaPrime.

We have measured the charge asymmetry in like-sign dilepton yields from B^0 B^0-bar meson decays using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find a_ll = [N(l+l+) - N(l-l-)]/[N(l+l+) + N[l-l-)] = +0.013 +/- 0.050 +/- 0.005 . We combine this result with a previous, independent measurement and obtain Re(epsilon_B)/(1+|epsilon_B|^2) = +0.0035 +/- 0.0103 +/- 0.0015 (uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively) for the CP impurity parameter, epsilon_B.

We report on a search for a supersymmetric $\tilde{B}$ meson with mass between 3.5 and 4.5 GeV/$c^2$ using 4.52 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity produced at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV, just below the $e^+e^-\to B\bar{B}$ threshold, and collected with the CLEO detector. A study of charm fragmentation into $D_s^{*+}$ and $D_s^+$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$=10.5 GeV is presented. This study using $4.72 \pm 0.05$ fb$^{-1}$ of CLEO II data reports measurements of the cross-sections $\sigma(D_s^{*+})$ and $\sigma(D_s^+)$ in momentum regions above $x=0.44$, where $x$ is the $D_s$ momentum divided by the maximum kinematically allowed $D_s$ momentum. We have used the CLEO II detector to study the multiplicity of charged particles in the decays of B mesons produced at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. Using a sample of 1.5 x 10^6 B meson pairs, we find the mean inclusive charged particle multiplicity to be 10.71 +- 0.02 +0.21/-0.15 for the decay of the pair. This corresponds to a mean multiplicity of 5.36 +- 0.01 +0.11/-0.08 for a single B meson. Using the same data sample, we have also extracted the mean multiplicities in semileptonic and nonleptonic decays. We measure a mean of 7.82 +- 0.05 +0.21/-0.19 charged particles per $B\bar{B}$ decay when both mesons decay semileptonically. When neither B meson decays semileptonically, we measure a mean charged particle multiplicity of 11.62 +- 0.04 +0.24/-0.18 per $B\bar{B}$ pair.

Using a sample of 3.3 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we measure the branching fraction for B -> rho l nu, |V_ub|, and the partial rate (Delta Gamma) in three bins of q^2 = (p_B-p_rho)^2. We find B(B^0 -> rho^- l^+ nu)=(2.69 +- 0.41^+0.35_-0.40 +- 0.50) 10^-4, |V_ub|=(3.23 +- 0.24^+0.23_-0.26 +- 0.58) 10^-3, Delta Gamma (0 < q^2 < 7 GeV^2/c^4) =(7.6 +- 3.0 ^+0.9_-1.2 +- 3.0) 10^-2 ns^-1, Delta Gamma (7 < q^2 < 14 GeV^2/c^4) =(4.8 +- 2.9 ^+0.7_-0.8 +- 0.7) 10^-2 ns^-1, and Delta Gamma (14 < q^2 < 21 GeV^2/c^4) = (7.1 +- 2.1^+0.9_-1.1 +- 0.6)10^-2 ns^-1. The quoted errors are statistical, systematic, and theoretical. The method is sensitive primarily to B -> rho l nu decays with leptons in the energy range above 2.3 GeV. Averaging with the previously published CLEO results, we obtain B(B^0 -> rho^- l^+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29^+0.33_-0.46 +- 0.41) 10^-4 and |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +- 0.14 ^+0.21_-0.29 +- 0.55) 10^-3.

Using a data sample collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have searched for dipion transitions between pairs of $\Upsilon$ resonances at energies near the $\Upsilon(4S)$. We obtain upper limits $B(\Upsilon(4S)\to \Upsilon(2S)\pi^+\pi^-) < 3.9 \times 10^{-4}$ and $B(\Upsilon(4S)\to \Upsilon(1S)\pi^+\pi^-) < 1.2 \times 10^{-4}$. We also observe the transitions $\Upsilon(3S)\to \Upsilon(1S)$, $\Upsilon(3S)\to \Upsilon(2S)$, and $\Upsilon(2S)\to \Upsilon(1S)$, from which we measure the cross-sections for the radiative processes $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(3S)\gamma$ and $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(2S)\gamma$.
The cross sections are averaged from the ones obtained for E+ E- --> GAMMA UPSI(nS) < PI+ PI- UPSI(mS) < MU+ MU- > > and E+ E- --> GAMMA UPSI(nS) < PI+ PI-UPSI(mS) < E+ E- > > channels with n=2,3, m=1,2.

Using 4.8 fb$~{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D~+\to\pi~0\ell~+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D~+\to\bar{K~0}\ell~+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: $R_{\gamma} \equiv \Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow \gamma gg)/\Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow ggg) = (2.75 \pm 0.04(stat.) \pm 0.15(syst.))%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}= 233 \pm 11 \pm 59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant $\alpha_{s}(M_{\Upsilon(1S)}) = 0.163 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.014$, or $\alpha_{s}(M_{Z}) = 0.110 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.007$.

This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B→Ds+X branching fraction as well as the B+→Ds(*)+D¯(*)0 and B0→Ds(*)+D(*)− branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B→Ds+X)=(12.11±0.39±0.88±1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive Ds+ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for fDs, the Ds+ decay constant. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

We have observed five new decay modes of the charmed baryon Λc+ using data collected with the CLEO II detector. Four decay modes, Λc+→pK¯0η, Ληπ+, Σ+η, and Σ*+η, are first observations of final states with an η meson, while the fifth mode, Λc+→ΛK¯0K+, requires the creation of an ss¯ quark pair. We measure the branching fractions of these modes relative to Λc+→pK−π+ to be 0.25±0.04±0.04, 0.35±0.05±0.06, 0.11±0.03±0.02, 0.17±0.04±0.03, and 0.12±0.02±0.02, respectively.

A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. In particular, although the functional dependence of the measured cross section disagrees with leading order QCD at small values of the two-photon invariant mass, the data show a transition to perturbative behavior at an invariant mass of approximately 2.5 GeV/$c^2$. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by writing to to: Pam Morehouse preprint secretary Newman Lab Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853 or by sending mail to: preprints@lns62.lns.cornell.edu

The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of χc2 states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature χc2→γJ/ψ→γl+l− with l=e,μ. Using 1.49 fb−1 of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the χc2 is determined to be Γ(χc2→γγ)=1.08±0.30(stat)±0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.

A measurement of the cross section for γγ→pp¯ is performed at two-photon center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.25 GeV. These results are obtained using e+e−→e+e−pp¯ events selected from 1.31 fb−1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector. The measured cross section is in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and is in excellent agreement with recent calculations based on a diquark model. However, leading order QCD calculations performed using the Brodsky-Lepage formalism are well below the measured cross section.

We have measured the B0B¯0 mixing probability, χd, using a sample of 965 000 BB¯ pairs from Υ(4S) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find χd=0.157±0.016±0.018−0.021+0.028. Using tagged B0 events, we find χd=0.149±0.023±0.019±0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a ±15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral B pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the CP impurity in the Bd0 system, ‖Re(εB0)‖<0.045 at 90% C.L.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we observe B-meson decays to Λc+ and report on improved measurements of inclusive branching fractions and momentum spectra of other baryons. For the inclusive decay B¯→Λc+X with Λc+→pK−π+, we find that the product branching fraction B(B¯→Λc+X)B(Λc+→pK−π+)=(0.273±0.051±0.039)%. Our measured inclusive branching fractions to noncharmed baryons are B(B→pX)=(8.0±0.5±0.3)%, B(B→ΛX)=(3.8±0.4±0.6)%, and B(B→Ξ−X)=(0.27±0.05±0.04)%. From these rates and studies of baryon-lepton and baryon-antibaryon correlations in B decays, we have estimated the branching fraction B(B¯→Λc+X) to be (6.4±0.8±0.8)%. Combining these results, we calculate B(Λc+→pK−π+) to be (4.3±1.0±0.8)%.

We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B→ψX to be (1.09±0.16±0.21)%, and the exclusive branching ratios for B−→ψK− and B¯ ¯0 *0 to be (0.09±0.05)% and (0.41±0.18)%, respectively. The mass difference between neutral and charged B mesons is 1.1±2.1 MeV, while the difference between the mass of Υ(4S) and twice the mean B-meson mass is 18.5±3.0 MeV. The ψ momentum distribution implies a substantial two-body decay (in agreement with direct measurements), but also some combination of B→ψX with MX>1.5 GeV, and B→ψ’X.

A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D*(2010) production from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV<W<10.6 GeV. Charged D* mesons are identified by the decays D*+→D0π+→K−π+π+ and the charge conjugate mode. The charged multiplicity has been measured at the ϒ(4S) and a value of 5.75±0.1±0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt leptons from B decay, the values 4.1±0.35±0.2 and 6.3±0.2±0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b→c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

A fourth state in the upsilon energy region has been seen in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A resonance is observed with a mass 1112±5 MeV above the lowest upsilon state. The 9.6-MeV rms width is greater than the 4.6-MeV energy resolution of the e+e− beams. The observed characteristics of the new state make it a likely candidate for the 4S3 state of the bb¯ system, lying above the threshold for the production of B mesons.
