Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV. Electron and muon decay modes ($\ell$ = e or $\mu$) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 $\pm$ 6 pb$^{-1}$ at 5.02 TeV and 206 $\pm$ 5 pb$^{-1}$ at 13 TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02 TeV are $\sigma$(pp $\to$ W+X) $\mathcal{B}$(W $\to$$\ell\nu$) = 7300 $\pm$ 10 (stat) $\pm$ 60 (syst) $\pm$ 140 (lumi) pb, and $\sigma$(pp $\to$ Z+X) $\mathcal{B}$(Z $\to$$\ell^+\ell^-$) = 669 $\pm$ 2 (stat) $\pm$ 6 (syst) $\pm$ 13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60-120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13 TeV are 20480 $\pm$ 10 (stat) $\pm$ 170 (syst) $\pm$ 470 (lumi) pb and 1952 $\pm$ 4 (stat) $\pm$ 18 (syst) $\pm$ 45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W$^+$ and W$^-$ production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13 TeV are reported.

Search for narrow trijet resonances in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The first search for singly produced narrow resonances decaying to three well-separated hadronic jets is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected at the CERN LHC. No significant deviations from the background predictions are observed between 1.75-9.00 TeV. The results provide the first mass limits on a right-handed boson Z$_{\mathrm{R}}$ decaying to three gluons and on an excited quark decaying via a vector boson to three quarks, as well as updated limits on a Kaluza-Klein gluon decaying via a radion to three gluons.

Observed and expected (background-only fitted) invariant mass spectra of trijet events. Data spectra from three years are fitted separately and the sum is shown in the figure. The fitting function used is ${ d N}/{ d m} = p_{0}(1-x)^{p_{1}}/x^{\sum_{i=2}^{3} p_{i}\log^{i-2}(x)}$. The fitted parameters are $p_{1} = 7.350, p_{2} = 6.926, p_{3} = 0.388$ for 2016, $p_{1} = 8.308, p_{2} = 5.931, p_{3} = 0.167$ for 2017 and $p_{1} = 8.770, p_{2} = 5.617, p_{3} = 0.106$ for 2018. $p_{0}$ is the normalization parameter and its exact value is irrelevant.

Expected and observed limits at 95% CL on $\sigma \mathcal{B} (X \to ggg) \mathcal{A}$ for a 3-body decay trijet resonance with $\Gamma_{X}\sim 3\% m_{X}$. The acceptance $\mathcal{A}$ is defined as $\mathcal{A} = N$(events with $m_{X}^{GEN} > 85\% m_{X}^{input}$) / $N$(events generated in the full phase space defined by the CMS default generator settings). Only 2016 data are used to derive limits below 2.0 TeV because of higher trigger thresholds in 2017 and 2018. Theoretical predictions assuming SM-like couplings are depicted with the red curve.

Measurements are presented of the triple-differential cross section for inclusive isolated-photon+jet events in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV as a function of photon transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}^\gamma$), photon pseudorapidity ($\eta^\gamma$), and jet pseudorapidity ($\eta^\text{jet}$). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ that probe a broad range of the available phase space, for $|\eta^\gamma|$ $<$ 1.44 and 1.57 $<$ $|\eta^\gamma|$ $<$ 2.50, $|\eta^\text{jet}|$ $<$ 2.5, 40 $<$ $p_\mathrm{T}^\gamma$ $<$ 1000 GeV, and jet transverse momentum, $p_\mathrm{T}^\text{jet}$, $>$ 25 GeV. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations, which reproduce the data within uncertainties.

Search for the production of W$^\pm$W$^\pm$W$^\mp$ events at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The CMS collaboration Sirunyan, Albert M ; Tumasyan, Armen ; Adam, Wolfgang ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 100 (2019) 012004, 2019.
Inspire Record 1734235 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.89176

A search for the production of events containing three W bosons predicted by the standard model is reported. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The search is performed in final states with three leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-charge leptons plus two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the signal for W$^\pm$W$^\pm$W$^\mp$ production is 0.60 (1.78) standard deviations, and the ratio of the measured signal yield to that expected from the standard model is 0.34 $^{+0.62}_{-0.34}$. Limits are placed on three anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production of massive axionlike particles.
