The mass spectrum of 3γ states produced in π−p collisions has been studied. A peak corresponding to ωo→πoγ decay in the π−p→ωon reaction was selected. The measurements were performed at the IHEP accelerator at momenta 21, 25, 32.5, 40 and 48 GeV/c. The reaction cross section decreases with the momentum in a power form (∼P−2.4) The differential cross section follows exponential t-dependence, exp (bt). The scattering cone shrinks slowly with the energy increase.

The spin-rotation parameters A and R and the related spin-rotation angle β have been measured for π+p and π−p elastic scattering using protons polarized in the scattering plane. The pion-beam momenta are 427, 471, 547, 625, and 657 MeV/c and the angular range is −0.9≤cosΘc.m.≤0.3. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a scintillator hodoscope for the pions, and the Large Acceptance Spectrometer combined with the JANUS polarimeter for the recoil protons. The results are compared with the four recent πN partial wave analyses (PWA's). Our data show that the major features of these PWA's are correct. The A and R measurements complete our program of pion-nucleon experiments, providing full data sets at three of the above beam momenta. Such sets can be used to test the constraints in the PWA's or to obtain a model-independent set of πN scattering amplitudes.

The polarization of the recoil proton in π+p and π−p elastic scattering using a liquid-hydrogen target has been measured for backward angles at 547 and 625 MeV/c. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the large-acceptance spectrometer to detect and analyze the momentum of the pions and the JANUS polarimeter to identify and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment agree with other measurements of the recoil polarization, with analyzing-power data previously taken by this group, and with predictions of partial-wave analyses.

Data on the 4π 0 decay mode of mesons have been obtained in a search for glueballs performed at the CERN SPS with the GAMS-4000 multiphoton spectrometer. A new tensor glueball candidate X(1810) appears as a clear peak in the 4π 0 mass spectrum. The 4π 0 decay of G(1590) is also observed. The measured value of BR(G→4 π 0 )/BR(G→ ηη )=0.8±0.3 further supports the glueball assignment of this scalar particle. The rate decay of f(1270) into 4π 0 has been measured: BR(f→4 π 0 ) = (3±1)×10 −3 .

A narrow meson which decays into ηη is observed in 38 GeV/ c π − p collisions at large momentum transfer. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer. The mass of this new meson is (1755 ± 8) MeV, its width is less than 50 MeV. Its spin-parity is J PC =0 ++ or less probably 2 ++ .

A structure has been observed at 2220 MeV in the mass spectrum of ηη ′ systems produced by 38GeV/ c and 100 GeV/ c ′ negative pions on protons. The angular distribution of the decay products shows that this structure is presumably a spin J ⩾ 2 meson.
