The polarization and angular distribution of protons scattered from protons, helium, beryllium, carbon, aluminum, calcium, iron, and tantalum were measured as functions of angle at 725 MeV. A variation of the usual double-elastic-scattering method was used, in that the sense of the first scattering angle was reversed in finding asymmetries, rather than the second angle. Energy analysis of the scattered beam was accomplished by means of a 102-degree magnetic spectrometer allowing a total resolution of ±10 MeV. The data were fitted with an optical model. In the proton-nucleus scattering the polarization reaches a maximum value of about 40% at angles less than the diffraction minimum. Results in proton-proton scatterings are more interesting; however, because of an uncertainty in the analyzing power of carbon, a definite statement cannot be made. One can say, however, that either the polarization in proton-proton scatterings is above 50% at this energy or the analyzing power of carbon at 6 deg and 600 MeV is more than 40%, which is considerably greater than the 30% measured at 725 MeV.

A study of π − + p →η + n near threshold shows that the cross section rises linearly with η momentum and that Λ η < 0.9 MeV c 2 (95% confidence limit).

The polarization of recoiling protons from the photoproduction of π0 mesons on liquid hydrogen has been measured for primary photon energies between 500 and 1000 MeV over a range of π0 c.m. angles from 55° to 130°. The results show structure not observed previously in experiments of less precision. In particular, the polarization at 90° c.m. is close to zero at a primary photon energy of 900 MeV. Also, a strong dependence of polarization on π0 c.m. angle between 600 and 900 MeV was observed. A subsidiary measurement of the polarization of the recoil protons from elastic e−p scattering at 900 MeV and q2=10 F−2 gave a value (1.3±2.0)%.

We have measured the cross section, the angular distribution, and the Λ polarization for the reaction π−p→ΛK0. A spark-chamber spectrometer was used to collect 8400 ΛK0 events at fourteen beam momenta near ΣK threshold. Our data do not show the prominent cross-section enhancement suggested by some previous experiments. However, detailed structure in the cross section and the angular distribution agrees well with a simple model which includes a cusp effect at ΣK threshold.

AVERAGE LAMBDA POLARIZATION.
We have used an optical spark-chamber spectrometer to perform a systematic study of the reaction π−p→ΛK0 at beam momenta between 930 and 1130 MeV/c. The cross section, angular distribution, and Λ polarization have been measured. We present our complete data from a sample of 11 400 events along with Legendre polynomial coefficients for the angular distributions. No striking cross-section enhancement at ΣK threshold is observed, but there is evidence for a small cusp effect. A simple model which takes account of the ΣK channel provides a good fit to our data.

Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

The observation of 70 000 K 0 p π + events produced with K + incident momenta of 1.21, 1.29, 1.38 and 1.69 GeV/ c allows a detailed description of the production and decay of the Δ(1236) and K ∗ (892) resonances which dominate the K 0 p π + final state. No striking variations with energy are observed. The associated production of Δ and K ∗ near threshold shows striking similarities with the same production at higher energy.

S-CHANNEL HELICITY FRAME.
Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. The average charged-particle multiplicity for the inelastic events is 8.02 ± 0.12.

In a study of the missing-mass spectrum near 1 GeV in the reaction π−+p→MM+n at three incident momenta near 2 GeV, we find no evidence for the recently reported narrow neutral mesons at 940, 963, and 1033 MeV.
