The differential cross section for neutron-proton elastic scattering was measured in the diffraction region with incident-neutron momenta between 8 and 30 GeV/c. The experiment was a spark-chamber-counter experiment, conducted at the alternating-gradient synchrotron. Results are presented and compared with currently available lower energy np data and comparable energy pp data.

Results are reported on K − -neutron interactions at c.m. energies near 2 GeV. The interactions are dominated by strong production of hyperon resonances, particularly Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520). Production cross sections and angular distributions are given for the Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520) and branching fractions to decay modes observed in the experiment are given for Σ(1385) and Λ(1520). The strong energy dependence of some features of the data suggests that s -channel effects are dominant.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the inelastic scattering of 12-GeV/c muons on protons are reported. These measurements cover a kinematic range of |q2| (the square of the four-momentum transferred from the lepton) up to 4.0 (GeV/c)2 and of muon energy losses (ν) up to 9.0 GeV. Only the scattered muon is observed in an optical spark-chamber apparatus. The data are compared with electron-proton inelastic scattering, and analyzed in terms of possible lepton form factors and anomalous interactions. μ−p inelastic scattering is found to exhibit the same mild |q2| behavior as does e−p inelastic scattering. No experimentally significant deviation from the predictions of muon-electron universality has been found. If the ratio of muon to electron inelastic cross sections is parametrized by the form (1.0+|q2|ΛD2)−2, we find with 97.7% confidence that ΛD>4.1 GeV/c. The muon-proton cross sections on the average are slightly smaller than the electron-proton cross sections. This observation is not experimentally significant because such a difference might be caused by systematic errors, but this observation is used to speculate as to the most fruitful direction for future experiments.

We have measured the ratio of the cross section for γ+n→π0+n to the cross section for γ+p→π0+p at 4.7 and 8.2 GeV. The measurements were made by detecting the recoil nucleons in coincidence with the decay γ rays of the π0's produced from a deuterium target. At 4.7 GeV the cross-section ratio, R≡σ(γ+n→π0+n)σ(γ+p→π0+p), is less than 1.0 at low t, with an indication of a dip at about t=−0.7(GeVc)2, and rises to 1.0 at high t. The ratios at the higher energy have less structure and are uniformly closer to 1.0.

Cross-Sections and Polarizations in the Reactions pi- p --> Lambda K0 and pi- p --> Lambda K* (890) Near the Backward Direction, from 3-GeV/c to 6-GeV/c

We have measured the differential cross sections and Λ polarizations in the reactions π−p→ΛK0 and π−p→ΛK*0 (890) near the backward direction, at 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c. Data equal to several times the world's total sample above 2 GeV/c were recorded. Both reactions are characterized by cross sections falling rapidly with beam momentum, and by large positive Λ polarizations for u′ between 0.0 and 0.6 GeV2. Analysis of π−p→ΛK0 yields an effective Regge trajectory consistent with antishrinkage of the backward peak. Separation into amplitudes of definite-parity-naturality exchange shows the reaction to be dominated by unnatural-parity exchange. The energy behavior of this exchange is, however, not consistent with a single linear baryon Regge trajectory or exchange-degenerate pair of trajectories. An apparent normalization discrepancy between data on π−p→ΛK0 of a CERN-ETH group and other high-statistics data including that of this experiment is discussed.

We study the differential and total backward cross sections for these states and the decay angular distributions of the resonances. We measure the total cross sections for these two reactions to be 179±72 nb for the φp reaction and 172±75 nb for the φΔ++ reaction. Both of these cross sections are consistent with the hypothesis of the φ being produced solely by its nonstrange-quark component as determined from the octet-singlet mixing angle resulting from application of the Gell-Mann—Okubo mass formula to the vector-meson nonet. These data are thus inconsistent with an ideally mixed φ meson.

We measure the cross sections times branching ratios for the production of the known meson resonances f(1270), g(1690), and h(2040). We also observe a new resonance with mass 2747±32 MeV, width 195±75 MeV, and production cross section times branching ratio into K+K−π+ of 0.84±0.08 μb. The data are consistent with the quantum numbers of this state being I=1, JP=7−.

We report on measurements of charged pion production cross sections at θ ≅ 50°, p T ≅ 3–9 GeV / c and √ s = 45 GeV , taken with the Split Field Magnet Detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Together with previous data at √ s = 62 GeV , this allows the calculation of the exponent n assuming a power law dependence p n T . Values of n ≈ 8 are found at low x T = 2 p T /√ s which drop to about 7 at x T ≈ 0.3. The measured values of π + /π − rise with x T and approach ≈ 2 at x T ≈ 0.3. A first-order QCD calculations is reasonably consistent with the data.

The ratios of high p T charged kaon to pion production cross sections at √ s = 45 and 62 GeV are presented. The values of the K ± π ± ratios are essentially independent of both √ s and x T = 2p T √s and are compatible with a strangeness suppression factor λ = 0.55. By contrast, the K − π − values fall with x T suggesting a gluonic origin of K − . QCD calculations agrees with the measurements.

The multiplicities of charged secondaries in proton-proton collisions were determined using the split-field-magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Measurements are presented on multiplicity distributions both for inelastic and non-single-diffractive events at four different energies s=30.4, 44.5, 52.6, and 62.2 GeV. The results reported here represent the first high-statistics measurement of charged multiplicity distributions at ISR energies with a magnetic detector covering nearly the full solid angle.

Events with a single highpT charged particle were recorded with the Split-Field-Magnet Detector in proton-proton collisions at the CERN-ISR. In the jet opposite to the trigger region the densities of photons and reconstructed neutral pions were measured with a liquid argon shower counter. Scaled momentum distributions of these particles are given and compared with those of charged pions. The spectra of charged and neutral pions coincide. The production cross-section of neutrals in the away jet shows no dependence on the flavour of the trigger particle.

We present evidence for the existence of two strange J P = 1 − mesons; one at 1410 MeV/c 2 coupling principally to K ∗ (892)π , and the other at 1790 MeV/c 2 couplingto K π , K ∗ π and ϱ K. The data derive from a partial wave analysis of the K 0 π + π − system produced in the reaction K − p → K 0 π + π − n at 11 GeV /c . The production mechanism and quark model assignment of each state are discussed. The state at 1410 MeV/c 2 most naturally understood as the first radial excitation of the K ∗ (892), and the 1790 MeV/c 2 object can be interpreted as the triplet D wave partner to the 3 − K ∗ (1780).

Large samples of inclusively produced Ξ−, Ω−, and Ξ0(1530) events are presented from a 1427 events/μb exposure of the large-aperture superconducting-solenoid spectrometer to an 11-GeV/c K− beam. Production characteristics of these states are compared with other data and shown to be consistent with hyperon exchange. Polarization of Ξ− shows an increase in magnitude with both Feynman x and transverse momentum. The Ξ− decay parameters are measured to be αΞ=-0.40±0.03 and ΦΞ=(5±10)° . Results of searches for higher-mass hyperons are presented. The Ξ−(1820)→Ξ0(1530)π− decay is observed, while we fail to confirm the existence of the Σ+(3170).

The relative yields of kaons and protons compared with the yield of pions at highpT and polar angles θ away from 90° (in the range from 10° to 45°) are presented forpp, dd, and αα interactions at a centre-of-mass energy\(\sqrt {s_{NN} }= 31\) GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. The measured particle ratios depend on the atomic mass numberA of the beam particles and on θ. TheA dependence of the ratios becomes stronger for largerpT and is more pronounced at smaller polar angles.

Data are presented for the exclusive reaction pp → pp π+ π− at\(\sqrt s= 62GeV\) with two leading protons at large Feynman-x and a centrally produced π+;π− system. In this kinematical configuration one expects a substantial contribution from Double Pomeron Exchange, which is a potential source of glueballs. The experiment was performed at the CERN ISR using the Split Field Magnet spectrometer. In the mass range between 1,000 and 1,700 MeV/c2 the invariant mass distribution for the central π+;π− system exhibits a very significant signal for thef0(1270) and no other obvious resonant states.

Ratios of inclusive cross sections σ(π+)/σ(π++K++p) and\(\sigma (\pi ^ -)/\sigma (\pi ^ -+ K^ -+ \bar p)\) were measured for proton-proton interactions with a highpT hadron in the final state around c.m.s. scattering angles θ≅20°, 20° and 45° at two ISR energies\(\sqrt s= 31\) Gev and 62 GeV. Results are shown as functions of transverse and longitudinal momentum and are compared with parton model predictions. The different dependences of positive and negative pion fractions atpT≅2–3 GeV/c on longitudinal momenta is similar to that observed in soft hadronic interactions at low values ofpT where the leading proton effect (diquark fragmentation) is known to contribute. The quantitative agreement of the data with diquark model predictions indicates the presence of diquark fragmentation also in highpT jets.

Tagging Diquarks by Protons of High Transverse Momentum in $p p$ Collisions at the {ISR}

Events are analyzed in which a high transverse momentum proton was produced at polar angles of 10°, 20° and 45°. The experiment was performed with the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN ISR at\(\sqrt s \)=62 GeV. A 4-jet structure of these events is found [1]. The measured charge structure of spectator jets is compatible with proton production from hard diquark scattering. This is supported by a study of baryon number compensation in the towards jets. The observed charge compensation in the towards jets suggests dominance of hard (ud) scattering. Evidence forΔ++ production at high transverse momentum indicates the presence of an additional (uu) scattering component. The properties of the recoiling away jets are compatible with the fragmentation of a valence quark and/or of a gluon as in the case of meson triggers.

Studies of Jet Production Rates in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at $e$({CM}) = 29-{GeV}

Production rates of multijet hadronic final states are studied ine+e− annihilation at 29 GeV center of mass energy. QCD shower model calculations with exact first order matrix element weighting at the first gluon vertex are capable of reproducing the observed multijet event rates over a large range of jet pair masses. The method used to reconstruct jets is well suited for directly comparing experimental jet rates with parton rates calculated in perturbative QCD. Evidence for the energy dependene of αs is obtained by comparing the observed production rates of 3-jet events with results of similar studies performed at higher center of mass energies.

We report a measurement of the e+e−→e+e−pp¯π+π− process with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the PEP e+e− storage ring at SLAC. Forty-five pp¯π+π− events were identified in data corresponding to an integrated e+e− luminosity of 142 pb−1. The cross section for γγ→pp¯π+π− is given both as a function of the γγ center-of-mass energy Wγγ, with Wγγ between 2.5 and 5.5 GeV, and as a function of the in variant mass squared q2 of one of the photons, with −q2<7 GeV2. This cross section falls much less rapidly with Wγγ than does the cross section for a similar process, γγ→pp¯. No Δ0Δ¯0 production is observed, and only a small fraction of the events at low Wγγ is consistent with γγ→Δ++Δ¯−−, Δ++p¯π−, or Δ¯−−pπ+. In an expanded search through the same data, four events compatible with either ΛΛ¯(Λ→pπ−) or Σ0Λ¯(Σ0→Λγ) production were found.

A MEASUREMENT OF THE TOTAL HADRONIC CROSS-SECTION IN TAGGED gamma gamma REACTIONS

Phys.Rev.D 41 (1990) 2667, 1990.
Inspire Record 281351 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22991

We present a measurement of the total cross section for γγ→hadrons, with one photon quasireal and the other a spacelike photon of mass squared −Q2. Results are presented as a function of Q2 and the γγ center-of-mass energy W, with the Q2 range extending from 0.2 to 60 GeV2, and W in the range from 2 to 10 GeV. The data were taken with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, which was operated at a beam energy of 14.5 GeV. The cross section exhibits a gentle falloff with increasing W. Its Q2 dependence is shown to be well described by an incoherent sum of vector-meson and pointlike scattering over most of the observed W range. Agreement at high Q2 is improved if a minimum-pT cutoff (motivated by QCD) is imposed on the pointlike contribution.
