Data obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV are presented on correlations between momentum analysed forward π − , K − and p and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. The data show that significant correlations are present over the whole rapidity range for all three types of negative particles. The dependence on various kinematic variables suggests a cluster mechanism for the production of particles. In this picture, pions would be produced in clusters emitted in the fragmentation region while K − and p emanate from non-leading clusters.

Significant two-particle correlations of dynamical origin are observed in 200 GeV/c π−p inclusive interactions. This is demonstrated by comparison with kinematic correlations calculated from an independent-particle-emission model. Two distinct correlation types are observed: (a) unlike-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 1.3 rapidity units independent of azimuthal separation, and (b) like-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 0.4 rapidity units which are observed only for small azimuthal separations.

Coherent photoproduction of vector mesons ρ0, ω, φ, and ρ′ on deuterium was studied using the SLAC 82-in. bubble chamber exposed to linearly polarized photons at 5.5 GeV. The reaction channel γd→π+π−d was studied in detail. Nine independent density-matrix parameters have been determined from the ρ0 decay distribution. ρ production in this channel was found to proceed almost completely through natural-parity exchange for |t|≤0.25 GeV2 and conserve s-channel c.m. helicity for |t|≤0.15 GeV2. A measurement of differential cross section for this channel has been made.

Elastic scattering of 14.3 GeV/ c K − with protons has been analyzed in the | t | region between 0.005 and 0.550 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The ratio α between the real and the imaginary part of the elastic forward scattering amplitude is found to be α =+0.056 ± 0.052. The slope parameters A and B in the expression d σ /d| t | ∞ exp( At + Bt 2 ) are A = 8.47 ± 0.20 (GeV/ c ) −2 and B = 1.82 ± 0.52 (GeV/ c ) −4 .

We have measured the inclusive cross section for the reactions p+n→p+X and π++n→p+X at 100 GeV/c in the kinematic region |t|<1.0 GeV2. The data were obtained from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. deuterium-filled bubble chamber to a tagged positively charged beam. The differential cross sections for these reactions are observed to scale in the ratio of the pn and π+n total cross sections and to be consistent with the predictions of a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model.

Measurements of the proton-proton total cross section have been made with increased precision (±0.6%) over the ISR energy range s =23.5−62.7 GeV . Two different experimental methods gave consistent results, showing that the total cross section increases 10% over the ISR range and in addition that the absolute value of the ISR luminosity can be measured to ±0.9%.

Measurements on the reaction π−p→ηn have been carried out at Fermilab with beam energies from 20 to 200 GeV in the same experiment in which pion charge-exchange scattering was studied. The differential cross sections have a pronounced dip in the forward direction. The data can be described well by a simple Regge-pole model but the resulting A2 trajectory is not degenerate with the ρ trajectory extracted from the charge-exchange data.

We report on a study of pion charge-exchange scattering carried out at Fermilab in the energy range 20 to 200 GeV. The results can be described remarkably well by a simple Regge-pole model. The charge-exchange cross sections in the forward direction lead to a prediction for the difference in total cross sections of π−p and π+p which is in satisfactory agreement with direct measurements of this difference in another experiment at Fermilab.
