Absolute cross sections for Compton scattering from protons have been determined at 180° for the backscattered photon at incident laboratory photon energies of 98 and 132 MeV. For the difference between the electric and the magnetic polarizability of the proton a value of (7.03 − 2.37 +2.49 − 2.05 +2.14 ) × 10 −4 fm 3 has been derived using the predictions from calculations based on relativistic dispersion relations.

The azimuthal correlations of D mesons and charged particles were measured with the ALICE detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. D$^0$, D$^+$, and D$^{*+}$ mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum $3<p_{\rm T}<16$ GeV/$c$ and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system $|y_{\rm cms}|<0.5$ (pp collisions) and $-0.96<y_{\rm cms}<0.04$ (p-Pb collisions) were correlated to charged particles with $p_{\rm T}>0.3$ Gev/$c$. The properties of the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson, described in terms of the yield of charged particles in the peak and peak width, are compatible within uncertainties between the two collision systems, and described by Monte-Carlo simulations based on the PYTHIA, POWHEG and EPOS 3 event generators.
The missing-mass technique has been used to study the spectra of neutral mesons produced by 2- and 3-Gev protons in the reaction p+d→He3+x0. Cross sections (dσdΩc.m.) of about 10−34 cm2/sr were observed for the π, η, and ω for 3-GeV protons. A peak with a much smaller cross section was observed at a mass of 956 MeV. We have tentatively identified this peak as the η′. Cross sections for the π and η were nearly a factor of 10 larger at 2 GeV than at 3 GeV. Deviations from simple phase space were observed near the two-pion threshold in both 2-GeV and 3-GeV data. Details of the experimental method and of the results are presented.
We present measurements of the production symmetric high-mass hadron and pion pairs by protons of 200, 300, and 400 GeV, incident on a beryllium target. The two-particle invariant cross section for pion production can be described by the function E1E2d6σdp13dp23=(1.7×10−28)pt−8.4(1−xt)14 cm2/GeV4 (where pt is the mean pt of the two hadrons). Functions of the same form have been used in describing single-pion inclusive production. Equality of the exponents of pt in the two processes is observed, confirming the role of smearing contributions to single-hadron cross sections.
Two-particle angular correlations were measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV for pions, kaons, protons, and lambdas, for all particle/anti-particle combinations in the pair. Data for mesons exhibit an expected peak dominated by effects associated with mini-jets and are well reproduced by general purpose Monte Carlo generators. However, for baryon-baryon and anti-baryon--anti-baryon pairs, where both particles have the same baryon number, a near-side anti-correlation structure is observed instead of a peak. This effect is interpreted in the context of baryon production mechanisms in the fragmentation process. It currently presents a challenge to Monte Carlo models and its origin remains an open question.
Fermilab experiment 711 has investigated proton-nucleus collisions in which two high-transverse-momentum hadrons are produced forming high-mass ++, +-, and -- charged states, using an 800-GeV/c proton beam on targets of beryllium, aluminum, iron, and tungsten. Our data cover the range in dihadron mass from 6 to 15 GeV/c2. We show here that the dependence of the cross section on atomic weight A can be parametrized as Aα where α=1.043±0.011(stat)±0.025 (syst), and is independent of the charge state of the dihadron system.
In the reaction K − +p→ Λ +X at 4.25 GeV/ c both the target fragmentation of the proton into lambda and the beam fragmentation of kaon into lambda have been studied. The sample consists of 21 000 Λ events with t >−1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 and 9000 Λ events with u > −1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Abundant π 0 and meson resonance production for residual masses M x <1.1 GeV/ c 2 is observed. In the t -channel of am effective exchange trajectory is deduced. which lies between the K and K(890) trajectories. In the u -channel the effective exchange trajectory is in good agreement with a nucleon trajectory. The extrapolated average pion multiplicities of the residual mass system in the t -channel are in very good agreement with the values measured in antiproton-proton annihilations at rest.

Fission fragment cross sections and angular anisotropies have been measured to high accuracy following fusion of 16O with the strongly deformed nucleus 182W, at bombarding energies spanning the fusion barrier region. Together with existing evaporation residue data, they show that at all the beam energies, the statistical transition state model adequately describes the fission properties measured. No significant evidence was found for a memory of the different configurations at fusion resulting from the target nucleus deformation, in contrast with previous measurements for deformed actinide nuclei.
The first measurements of elliptic flow of $\pi^\pm$, ${\rm K}^\pm$, p+$\overline{\rm p}$, ${\rm K_{S}^0}$, $\Lambda$+$\overline{\Lambda}$, $\phi$, $\Xi^-$+$\Xi^+$, and $\Omega^-$+$\Omega^+$ using multiparticle cumulants in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are presented. Results obtained with two- ($v_2\{2\}$) and four-particle cumulants ($v_2\{4\}$) are shown as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, for various collision centrality intervals. Combining the data for both $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$ also allows us to report the first measurements of the mean elliptic flow, elliptic flow fluctuations, and relative elliptic flow fluctuations for various hadron species. These observables probe the event-by-event eccentricity fluctuations in the initial state and the contributions from the dynamic evolution of the expanding quark-gluon plasma. The characteristic features observed in previous $p_{\rm T}$-differential anisotropic flow measurements for identified hadrons with two-particle correlations, namely the mass ordering at low $p_{\rm T}$ and the approximate scaling with the number of constituent quarks at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$, are similarly present in the four-particle correlations and the combinations of $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$. In addition, a particle species dependence of flow fluctuations is observed that could indicate a significant contribution from final state hadronic interactions. The comparison between experimental measurements and CoLBT model calculations, which combine the various physics processes of hydrodynamics, quark coalescence, and jet fragmentation, illustrates their importance over a wide $p_{\rm T}$ range.
At the projectile-fragment separator FRS of GSI, relativistic secondary beams of about 520 MeV/nucleon were produced by fragmentation of a primary beam of58Ni at 650 MeV/nucleon in a beryllium target. By means of aΔE—Bρ—TOF measurement, the fragments have been identified and their charge-changing probabilities in targets of CH2, C, Al, and Pb have been determined. We describe the results for the total charge-changing cross sections in this first paper, whereas a second article deals with the partial charge-changing cross sections. At the drip line, the measured charge-changing cross sections exhaust close to 100% of the total interaction cross sections as calculated with semiempirical models. The measurements at the proton drip line with low-Z targets indicate that only a very small increase of the cross sections may be observed, whereas the measurements with a lead target show that no significant increase of the total charge-changing cross sections is present which would be a hint for low-lying dipole strength. Our experimental data are compared to Glauber-type calculations.
