The x and Q 2 dependence of the single photon exchange cross section d 2 σ /d Q 2 d x and the proton structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and R ( x , Q 2 ) have been measured in deep inelastic muon proton scattering in the region 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 3 < Q 2 < 190 GeV 2 . By comparing data at different incident muon energies R was found to have little kinematic dependence and an average value of −0.010 ± 0.037 (stat.) ± 0.102 (stat.). The observed deviations from scaling gave the value of Λ MS , the QCD mass scale parameter, to be 105 −45 +55 (stat.) −45 +85 (syst.) MeV. The fraction of the momentum of the nucleon carried by gluons was found to be ∼56% at Q 2 ∼22.5 GeV 2 . It is shown that to obtain a description of the data for F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) together with that measured in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering at lower Q 2 it is necessary to include additional higher twist contributions. The value of Λ MS remains unchanged with the inclusion of these contributions which were found to have an x -dependence of the form x 3 /(1 − x ).

LIMITS ON CHARM PRODUCTION IN HADRONIC INTERACTIONS NEAR THRESHOLD

Phys.Rev.Lett. 55 (1985) 154, 1985.
Inspire Record 16192 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.3274

We present the results of an experiment to search for associated charm production near threshold in 13-GeV/c π−p interactions. A large aperture PWC spectrometer was sensitive to the decay fragments of the forward-produced D*−’s expected from the two-body reactions π−+p→D*−+Λc+,Σc +,. . . . The missing baryon mass was determined from the vector momenta of the incident pion and the candidate D*−. No evidence for these reactions was found, which resulted in a 7-nb upper limit (95% confidence level) for each of the cross sections σ(π−p→D*−Λc+) and σ(π−p→D*−Σc+).

Nucl.Phys.B 252 (1985) 561-577, 1985.
Inspire Record 216909 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33790

We present a measurement of the polarization and decay asymmetry parameters of the Ξ − inclusively produced in the forward direction in K − p interactions at 5 GeV/ c . The Ξ − decay parameters have been determined to be α Ξ = −0.405 ± 0.029 and Φ Ξ = 14.7° ± 16.0° from a sample of 20 865 events. A linear rise of the Ξ − polarization has been seen with respect to the transverse momentum of the Ξ − , reaching a maximum of 49 ± 4% at P ⊥ ∼ 0.50 GeV/ c . The value of α Ξ is consistent with the world average prior to 1975, but below the value measured by two recent experiments.

We present the results of a search for charm F mesons in 360 GeV/ c π − p interactions. Several methods have been used; all yield no evidence for the F and are interpreted as 90% confidence level cross section upper limits.

Production and Decay of the F Meson in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at 10-{GeV} Center-of-mass Energy

Inspire Record 207949 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30425

Using the ARGUS detector at DORIS, we have observed the production of F ± mesons in e + e − annihilation at a centre of mass energy of 10 GeV through their subsequent decays into φπ ± and φπ + π − π ± . The values obtained for [ R (e + e − →FX). Branching Ratio] are (1.47 ± 0.32 ± 0.20)% and (1.63 ± 0.42 ± 0.41)% respectively. The observed mass is (1973.6 ± 2.6 ± 3.0) MeV c 2 . The F momentum spectrum is as expected for the fragmentation of c quarks into charmed mesons, but is somewhat softer than for fragmentation into D ∗ mesons. The relevant angular distributions are consistent with a spin-zero assignment of the F meson.

A MEASUREMENT OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SINGLE NUCLEON CROSS-SECTIONS FOR j / psi MUOPRODUCTION IN IRON AND IN H-2, D-2 TARGETS

The cross sections for J ψ production have been measured in interactions of 280 GeV μ + on hydrogen and deuterium (H, D) and also in interactions of 250 GeV μ + on iron. The single-nucleon cross sections in iron are found to be larger than those in H, D. The mean ratio of the iron to H, D photoproduction cross sections in the range 60 < v < 200 GeV is 1.45 ±0.12 (statistical) ±0.22 (systematic error). Within the framework of the photon-gluon fusion model, this indicates that the gluon density per nucleon is ∼45% larger in iron than in H, D in the range 0.026 < x < 0.085, on a mass scale Q 2 eff ∼M 2 J ψ .

A high-statistics measurement is presented of the cross section for the process e+e−→τ+τ− at s=29 GeV from the MAC detector at PEP. A fit to the angular distribution of our sample of 10 153 events with |cosθ|<0.9 gives an asymmetry Aττ=−0.055±0.012±0.005 from which we find the product of electron and tau axial-vector weak neutral couplings gAegAτ=0.22±0.05.

Precision Measurement of the Total Cross-section for $e^+ e^- \to$ Hadrons at a Center-of-mass Energy of 29-{GeV}

Phys.Rev.D 31 (1985) 1537, 1985.
Inspire Record 206052 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.4048

We report a high-precision measurement of the ratio R of the total cross section for e+e−→hadrons to that for e+e−→μ+μ−, at a center-of-mass energy of 29.0 GeV using the MAC detector. The result is R=3.96±0.09. This value of R is used to determine a value of the strong coupling constant αs of 0.23±0.06, nearly independent of fragmentation models. Two different analysis methods having quite different event-selection criteria have been used and the results are in agreement. Particular attention has been given to the study of systematic errors. New higher-order QED calculations are used for the luminosity determination and the acceptance for hadrons.

Direct Photon Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

Fernandez, E. ; Ford, William T. ; Qi, N. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 54 (1985) 95, 1985.
Inspire Record 204606 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20304

Direct photon production in hadronic events from e+e− annihilation has been studied at s=29 GeV with use of the MAC detector at the PEP storage ring. A charge asymmetry A=(−12.3±3.5)% is observed in the final-state jets. The cross section and the charge asymmetry are in good agreement with the predictions of the fractionally charged quark-parton model. Both the charge asymmetry and total yield have been used to determine values of quark charges. Limits have been established for anomalous sources of direct photons.
