Photoproduction cross sections of charged pi mesons from hydrogen and deuterium have been measured as a function of meson angle at gamma-ray energies of 200, 235, and 265 Mev. The angular range extends from 30° to 180° in the laboratory system. Absolute cross sections have been determined. A least-squares fit of the measured cross sections has been made to the expression A+Bcosθ+Csin2θ, which assumes only S and P wave scattering. The coefficients so determined are qualitatively consistent with electric and magnetic dipole absorption together with the assumption of a resonant state of angular momentum 32 and of energy close to 300 Mev. Comparison with neutral meson production indicates some direct charged meson production in the P state.

Absolute differential cross sections for the photoproduction of pions of 33.8-MeV laboratory kinetic energy from protons were measured at eight angles between 29.5 and 146.1° in the center-of-mass system. The over-all absolute accuracy is 4%, while the relative accuracy within the angular distribution is 3%. Comparison is made to various theoretical calculations, with and without inclusion of the effect of a γ−π−ρ-meson coupling. Existing calculations based on dispersion theory give only fair agreement with the data.

Measurement of the exotic exchange reaction π − p → K + Σ − has been performed at 5 and 8 GeV, in the −0.015 to −0.13 and −0.009 to −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 range of t repectively. We give the value near t = 0 of the differential cross section at 5 GeV, 21 −21 +76 nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , and an upper limit (< 37 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 ) at 8 GeV. As a check the measured differential cross section is given at both energies for the reaction π + p → K + Σ + in the same range of t ★★ ★★ Results presented here were included in the thesis of Doctorat d′Etat by M.N. The most recent total-cross-section data are used to calculate real parts of the forward elastic π±p scattering amplitudes from threshold to 240 GeV/c. Using statistical and systematic uncertainties of the total cross sections and their momenta, along with uncertainties of the subtraction and coupling constants, unphysical cuts, and cross-section extrapolations, we calculate the uncertainties of the real amplitudes. Our results are compared to experimental and other theoretical determinations of the π±p forward real amplitudes.

In a large-acceptance spectrometer, muon pairs and associated hadrons were observed with μμ masses up to 10 GeV/ c 2 and ΔM M = 0.015 resolution. We report here on the production of 4000 J/ ψ and 80 ψ ′ mesons.

Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. This paper presents production and decay characteristics of 500 high-mass, high-resolution μ+μ− pairs produced in π− Be collisions at 150 and 175 GeV/c. The data do not agree with a simple Drell-Yan production mechanism, but indicate that higher-order quantum-chromodynamic corrections must be included.

Differential cross sections and polarization analyzing powers for proton-deuteron elastic scattering have been measured at 800 MeV incident proton kinetic energy over the range of center-of-mass angles from 14.1° to 153.6°. The differential cross sections are described by the Glauber theory of impulse approximation at forward angles (−t<0.5) and exhibit the exponential dependence on cosθc.m. typical for these energies at backward angles (cosθc.m.<−0.5). The analyzing power shows considerable structure with strong positive peaks at forward and backward angles and a sharp dip at t=−0.4 typical at intermediate energies. There is no evidence for correspondence of the angular dependence of the analyzing power with that for the pp→dπ+ reaction. At large momentum transfer the data favor calculations based on multiple scattering with a modified deuteron form factor rather than N* exchange. NUCLEAR REACTIONS H2(p,p)H2, E=800 MeV, measured σ(θ) and Ay(θ).
