The most recent total-cross-section data are used to calculate real parts of the forward elastic π±p scattering amplitudes from threshold to 240 GeV/c. Using statistical and systematic uncertainties of the total cross sections and their momenta, along with uncertainties of the subtraction and coupling constants, unphysical cuts, and cross-section extrapolations, we calculate the uncertainties of the real amplitudes. Our results are compared to experimental and other theoretical determinations of the π±p forward real amplitudes.

Spectra of p, d, and t from relativistic nuclear collisions

Sandoval, A. ; Gutbrod, H.H. ; Meyer, W.G. ; et al.

Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. Production of High Mass Muon Pairs in $\pi^-$ Be Collisions at 150-{GeV}/$c$ and 175-{GeV}/$c$

Barate, R. ; Bareyre, P. ; Bonamy, P. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 43 (1979) 1541, 1979.
Inspire Record 142156 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20768

This paper presents production and decay characteristics of 500 high-mass, high-resolution μ+μ− pairs produced in π− Be collisions at 150 and 175 GeV/c. The data do not agree with a simple Drell-Yan production mechanism, but indicate that higher-order quantum-chromodynamic corrections must be included.

Observation of Planar Three Jet Events in e+ e- Annihilation and Evidence for Gluon Bremsstrahlung

Inspire Record 143985 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.6339

Topological distributions of charged and neutral hadrons from the reaction e + e − → multihadrons are studied at √ s of about 30 GeV. An excess of planar events is observed at a rate which cannot be explained by statistical fluctuations in the standard two-jet process. The planar events, mostly consisting of a slim jet on one side and a broader jet on the other, are shown actually to possess three-jet structure by demonstrating that the broader jet itself consists of two collinear jets in its own rest system. Detailed agreement between data and predictions is obtained if the process e + e − →q q ̄ g is taken into account. This strongly suggests gluon bremsstrahlung as the origin of the planar three-jet events. By comparison of the data with the qq̄g-model we obtain a value for the strong coupling constant of α S ( q 2 = 0.17 ± 0.04.

Search for Narrow Resonances in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at c.m. Energies Between 29.90-{GeV} and 31.46-{GeV}

The JADE collaboration Bartel, W. ; Cords, D. ; Dittmann, P. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 91 (1980) 152-154, 1980.
Inspire Record 152290 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27258

A search for narrow resonances in e + e − annihilation at c.m. energies between 29.90 and 31.46 GeV provides no evidence for the existence of such states. The 90% confidence upper limit on the integrated resonance cross section is 38 nb MeV, significantly below the value expected for the lowest (t,t̄) bound state.

PROTON DEUTERON ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 800-MeV

Winkelmann, E. ; Bevington, P.R. ; Mcnaughton, M.W. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.C 21 (1980) 2535-2541, 1980.
Inspire Record 158610 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26340

Differential cross sections and polarization analyzing powers for proton-deuteron elastic scattering have been measured at 800 MeV incident proton kinetic energy over the range of center-of-mass angles from 14.1° to 153.6°. The differential cross sections are described by the Glauber theory of impulse approximation at forward angles (−t<0.5) and exhibit the exponential dependence on cosθc.m. typical for these energies at backward angles (cosθc.m.<−0.5). The analyzing power shows considerable structure with strong positive peaks at forward and backward angles and a sharp dip at t=−0.4 typical at intermediate energies. There is no evidence for correspondence of the angular dependence of the analyzing power with that for the pp→dπ+ reaction. At large momentum transfer the data favor calculations based on multiple scattering with a modified deuteron form factor rather than N* exchange. NUCLEAR REACTIONS H2(p,p)H2, E=800 MeV, measured σ(θ) and Ay(θ).

MEASUREMENT OF PI- P ---> PI- PI+ N NEAR THRESHOLD AND CHIRAL SYMMETRY BREAKING

Bjork, C.W. ; Jones, S.E. ; King, T.R. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 44 (1980) 62-65, 1980.
Inspire Record 157275 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20699

d2σdΩdT for π+ mesons produced in π−p→π−π+n was measured at seven incident energies between 203 and 357 MeV and the integrated reaction cross section was calculated. The matrix element, when extrapolated to threshold and compared with soft-pion calculations, determined the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ=0.05±0.26, which is consistent with the Weinberg Lagrangian. The large hard-pion contributions at 203 MeV demonstrated the absolute necessity for comparing at threshold.

Experimental Limits on the Strength of Weak Neutral Currents in Lepton Pair Production at {PETRA} Energies

The JADE collaboration Bartel, W. ; Cords, D. ; Dittmann, P. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 99 (1981) 281-286, 1981.
Inspire Record 156813 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27121

The processes e + e − → e + e − and μ + μ − have been studied at PETRA using the JADE detector. The data, which were collected at s -values of up to 1300 GeV 2 have been analysed in terms of an electro-weak extension of QED to obtain values for the weak vector and axial vector couplings in the lepton sector. The values obtained agree with the predictions of the standard Salam-Weinberg model and the data are further analysed in terms of this model to obtain the limits 0.10 < sin 2 ϑ w < 0.40 (68% CL). The mass of the neutral weak gauge boson is deduced to be greater than 51 GeV/ c 2 .
