Measurements have been made on 753 four-prong events obtained by exposing the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20-in. liquid hydrogen bubble chamber to 2.85-Bev protons. The partial cross sections observed for multiple meson production reactions are: pp+−(p+p→p+p+π++π−), 2.67±0.13; pn++−, 1.15±0.09; pp+−0, 0.74±0.07; d++−, 0.06±0.02; four or more meson production, 0.04±0.02, all in mb. Production of two mesons appears to occur mainly in peripheral collisions with relatively little momentum transfer. In cases of three-meson production, however, the protons are typically deflected at large angles and are more strongly degraded in energy. The 32, 32 pion-nucleon resonance dominates the interaction; there is some indication that one or both of the T=12, pion-nucleon resonances also play a part. The recently discovered resonance in a T=0, three-pion state appears to be present in the pp+−0 reaction. Results are compared with the predictions of the isobaric nucleon model of Sternheimer and Lindenbaum, and with the statistical model of Cerulus and Hagedorn. The cross section for the reaction π0+p→π++π−+p is derived using an expression from the one-pion exchange model of Drell.

K−−p interactions in the Columbia-BNL 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber were studied at nine momenta from 594 to 820 MeVc. The results for elastic-scattering and zero-prong-plus-V0 events are presented here. Differential cross sections are given for the K−p, K¯0n, and Λπ0 final states. A fit to the K¯N channels was obtained which shows the effects of a 32− resonance at 1701 MeV. This energy is appreciably displaced from the peak in the inelastic cross section.

A measurement of the differential cross section for the reaction n + p → d + π° has been made using a neutron beam with kinetic energies up to 720 MeV. The angle and momentum of the deuterons were measured using an analyzing magnet and wire spark chambers with a magnetostrictive readout. The photons from the decaying π° were not detected. The neutron energy was calculated from the measured deuteron angle and momentum. The cross sections are compared to those for the reaction π + + d ⇆ p + p as a test of isotopic spin invariance in strong interactions. The symmetry of the cross sections about 90° is also investigated, and an upper limit of about 1% is placed on the real part of the ratio of isospin-violating to isospin-conserving amplitudes.

Production cross sections and angular distributions are given for the Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520) and branching fractions to decay modes observed in the experiment are given for Σ(1385) and Λ(1520). The strong energy dependence of some features of the data suggests that s -channel effects are dominant.

This paper contains the results of a study of the reaction K−p→Λπ0 in the center-of-mass-system-energy region of 1647 to 1715 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis was performed in this channel. Two allowable solutions were obtained. The first solution in this region contains the D13[t=0.08±0.01, Γ(ER)=44±11 MeV, and ER=1671±3 MeV] partial wave as the only resonant amplitude; the second solution contains both the P11[t=0.16±0.01, Γ(ER)=81±10 MeV, and ER=1671±2 MeV] and the D13[t=0.17±0.01, Γ(ER)=76±5 MeV, and ER=1655±2 MeV] partial wave as resonant.

p p annihilation cross sections into 2-, 4- and 6-prong topologies, and the exclusive annihilation cross sections for the π + π − , K + K − , π + π − π 0 , π + π + π − π − , π + π + π − π − π 0 , π + π + π + π − π − π − , and π + π + π + π − π − π − π 0 channels in the momentum range 374–680 MeV/ c were measured. No prominent structure was observed in the momentum dependence of any of the above cross sections, but a small enhancement in the cross section was observed at 490 MeV/ c corresponding to the S meson mass in the topological, and π + π − π 0 and π + π + π − π − π 0 cross sections. If the extensive of the S meson with a mass and width of 1935.5 and 2.8 MeV/ c 2 is assumed, our measurement gives a total resonant annihilation cross section into charged particles of 10.0±3.0 mb.

pp interactions at 11 momenta in the range 0.9 to 2.0 GeV/ c have been studied. The elastic angular distributions, covering the c.m. angular range 22°–90°, agree in general with Hoshizaki's phase-shift analysis which shows the looping 1 D in and 3 F 3 amplitudes in the Argand diagram. About 80% of pn π + events come from the n Δ ++ state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the density matrix elements of the Δ ++ show no momentum or angular dependence. A large fraction of pp π 0 events also come from the p Δ + state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the Δ + density matrix elements is similar to that for the case of Δ ++ .

Results are presented of an untagged e + e − → e + e − + π + π − experiment performed at PEP with the DELCO detector. In the invariant-mass range 0.7 ⩽ W ππ < 2.0 GeV/ c 2 , the QED e + e − background is identified and eliminated, and both the π + π − predictions and the μ + μ − and K + K − background substractions are normalized to the measurement of the e e + e − events. The results agree with a simple model of superposition and interference of the f 0 (1270) resonance, produced with helicity 2, with a Born-term continuum. From a fit of the model to the data, the radiative width of the f 0 is determined to be Γ f 0 → γγ = 2.70 ± 0.21 keV.

We have studied inclusive D*± production using the DELCO detector at PEP. Our technique involved kaon identification in the momentum range above 3.2 GeV/c using a threshold gas Čerenkov counter. This leads to a model-independent upper limit on D0−D¯0 mixing of 8.1% (90% confidence level). We also have measured the charm fragmentation function, which peaks at x≡PD*(Ebeam2−MD*2)12 of 0.56±0.06(stat.), and the total cross section for D* production, σ(D*±)=0.140±0.021(stat.)±0.032(syst.) nb (x>0.3, with radiative correction).

The antineutron angular distribution in the reaction p¯C→n¯X was measured at 590 MeV/c. The shape of the distribution is found to be similar to that of the elementary process p¯p→n¯n, which indicates that the quasi-free process is the dominant mechanism for p¯C→n¯X. We report final results on prompt electron production in hadronic events from e+e− annihilations at √s =29 GeV, obtained with the DELCO detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. We find the semielectronic branching ratios of charm and bottom quarks to be B(c→se+νe)=(11.6−0.9 +1.1)% and B(b→ce−ν¯e)=(14.9−1.9 +2.2)% respectively. These results, from the complete data set, are consistent with an earlier analysis of partial data and indicate hard fragmentation functions for both c and b quarks, with mean values 〈zc〉=0.59±0.04 and 〈zb〉=0.72±0.05. The errors indicated here are a combination of statistical and systematic uncertainties.

A search for pair production of fourth-generation sequential leptons in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy s=56 GeV is reported. Measurements of the differential cross sections for e + e − →μ + μ − and e + e − →τ + τ − at values of s from 52 to 57 GeV are reported. The forward-backward asymmetries and the total cross sections for these reactions are found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model of the electro-weak interactions. These measurements are used to extract values of the weak coupling constant g v e g v l and g A e g A l , where l = μ or τ .
