Inelastic Interactions Between 6.8-BeV/c $\pi^-$ Mesons and Nucleons

An analysis was made of 355 interactions between 1r- mesons and nucleons. The momentum and angular distributions of the secondary charged particles were measured. Information on 1r0 mesons produced in the interactions has been obtained. The experimental data are compared with the statistical theory. The results suggest that peripheral interactions may exist. In events of low multiplicity (two-prong cases) "one-meson" peripheral interactions play an important role, while in events of large multiplicity an important role is played by interactions not of the one-meson type, among which also central collisions are possible.

Properties of $\pi^0$ Mesons Produced with Strange Particles in $\pi^- - p$ and $\pi^- - C$ Interactions

This investigation was performed with a 24-liter propane bubble chamber [i] and is a continu- ation of our previous work on the production of strange particles by 7-8-BeV 1r- mesons on hydrogen and carbon. [ 2 - 5 ] The properties of 1r 0 mesons inferred from the y quanta accom- panying A and K 0 production are given, and are compared with the properties of 1r+ and 7r- mesons emitted in A and K 0 production processes. The possibility of a resonance with radi- ative decay is noted.

Pion resonances accompanying strange particle production in 7.5 GeV $\pi^- -p$ interactions

The simultaneous production of pion resonances and strange particles was investigated. The simultaneous production of p 0 mesons and A-K pairs was observed in events characterized by charged particle multiplicity ns = 4 and having cross sections upo = 20 ± 8 ~b. Cross sections for the production of w and YJ resonances are presented. The 1340-MeV peak in the distribution of four-pion effective masses is discussed.

Influence of the collision centrality upon negative particle production in d C, alpha C and C C interactions at 4.2 GeV/c per nucleon

The influence of collision centrality upon spectra of negative particles produced indC, αC and CC interactions at 4.2 GeV/c per nucleon is studied. The netcharge of secondary particles is used as a measure of collision centrality. Comparison with the nucleon-nucleon collisions and with Dubna intranuclear cascade model is presented. The main features of the momentum, rapidity and angular spectra are compatible with the independent, nucleon-nucleon collision picture. Only in thepT spectra, the observed particle excess, for low and highpT, is inconsistent with this approach. In contrast to the pions, the spectra of protons are more sensitive to the collision centrality.

Inclusive η photoproduction has been studied at 9.7 GeV, on hydrogen and deuterium targets. A simple, parameter-free ρ0-dominance model adequately fits the forward cross sections, but overestimates the cross section at large momentum transfer.
