Elastic Photoproduction of omega Mesons from Hydrogen, Deuterium, and Complex Nuclei

We have studied ω photoproduction using 7.5- to 10.5-GeV tagged photons. Cross sections from hydrogen lie 22% below the bubble chamber results of Ballam et al., but have a similar slope. Density matrices indicate approximate s-channel helicity conservation. The proton-neutron cross-section difference is midway between zero and the value suggested by the γp−γn total-cross-section difference. Fits to the cross sections for D, Be, and Cu and those for Be, C, Al, Cu, and Pb from a previous experiment yield σωN=25.4±2.7 mb and γω24π=7.6±1.2.

Energy Dependence of Backward $\pi^- D$ Elastic Scattering in the 1-{GeV} - 2-{GeV} Region

Differential cross sections for backward π − d elastic scattering (−1 ≦ cos θ c.m ≦ −0.98) have been measured at fourteen momenta from 0.98 to 1.76 GeV/ c and at 2.45 GeV/ c . Energy dependence of the cross section exibits a new wide structure at √ s ≈ 2.9 GeV. Possible mechanisms of the reaction accounting for this structure are presented. Experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Bismuth

Parity-nonconserving optical rotation has been observed and measured on the 8757-ÅA magnetic-dipole absorption line in atomic bismuth vapor. The result, R≡Im(E1M1)=(−10.4±1.7)×10−8, is of the approximate size calculated with use of the Weinberg-Salam theory of the weak neutral-current interaction with sin2θW=0.23.
