Nuclear-target diffraction dissociation in pi+ and K+ collisions with Au and Al at 250-GeV/c.

An analysis of theA-dependence of the target-diffractive cross-section is presented. Data on thet-dependence of the cross section are fitted in the usual exponential form. The mean multiplicity of negative particles produced diffractively is found not to be sensitive to the nuclear mass. TheA-dependence of the emitted proton multiplicity and the angular distributions of the produced charged particles suggest re-scattering of the emitted particles on other nucleons of the nucleus. All these facts are compared with results obtained by Monte-Carlo simulation according to a two-component Dual Parton Model.

Cross-sections of backward proton production in 40-GeV/c pi- (K-, anti-p) A interactions

The inclusive cross sections of backward proton production in π − ( K − , p ) -Be, Al, Cu, Pb interactions at 40 GeV/ c are presented. Protons have been detected in the angular range 150°–165° and kinetic energy region 0.1–0.3 GeV. The invariant cross-section ratios for various beam particles are independent of the values of kinetic energy and of the nuclear target type: 〈ƒ K − /ƒ π − 〉= 0.87 ± 0.03 stat ± 0.03 syst , 〈ƒ p /ƒ π − 〉 = 1.82 ± 0.10 stat ± 0.05 syst . The A -dependence of the cross-section slope parameter for A ⩾27 is less than ∼2%.

New data on the ν ′ ν system produced in the π − p charge exchange at 38 GeV c momentum confirm the existence of the narrow ν ′ ν resonance X(1910). The hypothesis of the X(1910) quantum numbers being a J PC = 1 −+ , forbidden for the q[ovbar|q] meson, is proposed to explain the extremely low limits obtained for X(1910) decays through π 0 π 0 , νν and K 0 s K 0 s channels and the flat t -dependence of the X(1910) production cross section.

Evidence for a 1.9-{GeV} Meson Decaying Into $\eta \eta^\prime$

Evidence for a new meson decaying into ηη′ has been found in 38 GeV π − p charge-exchange interactions. The mass and the width of this meson are (1917 ± 15) MeV and (90 −50 +35 ) MeV, respectively. Possible spin and parity assignments are J PC = 0 ++ , 1 −+ or 2 ++ , isospin and G -parity are I G = 0 + . The t -dependence of the differential cross section follows an exponential behaviour exp( bt with a small slope: b = (2±1) (GeV/ c ) −2 .Upper limits on its decay into ππ, ηη and K K exotic interpretation of this meson.
