We have measured the differential cross section for p¯p and pp elastic scattering at s=53 GeV in the interval 0.5<|t|<4.0 (GeV/c)2 at the CERN intersecting storage rings using the split-field magnet detector. The shape of the differential cross section differs significantly between p¯p and pp scattering in the region 1.1<|t|<1.5 (GeV/c)2, with p¯p data showing a less pronounced dip structure than pp data.

The p¯p elastic-scattering differential cross section shows a minimum at t∼0.5 (GeV/c)2 and a secondary maximum at t∼0.9 (GeV/c)2. The total cross section for the annihilation process p¯+p→π−+π+ is 6.6±3.5 μb; the cross section for p¯+p→K−+K+ is <2.2 μb.

The high antiproton-proton luminosity obtained by using a target system consisting of a hydrogen gas-jet crossing a coasting beam of cooled antiproton circulating in one of the rings of CERN's ISR provides the possibility to measure low cross section reactions with very high precision. We present measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section at 90° CM at incident momenta between 3.5 GeV/ c and 5.7 GeV/ c . The precision of these measurements is much higher than previously reported results. The data show that the cross section of this reaction decreases faster than s −12 over this momentum range.

Differential cross sections have been measured in the region of small forward angles (between 0 and ∼40 mrad) for the elastic scattering reactions pp → pp at 4.2, 7.0 and 10.0 GeV /c and p p → p p at 4.2, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 GeV /c . The maximum momentum transfer is ∼0.025 GeV 2 at the lowest and ∼0.10 GeV/c at the highest incident momentum. Values of the slope and the real part of the forward scattering amplitude of the above reactions have been derived; the values obtained are in good agreement with dispersion relations.

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering data at 6.2 GeV/ c in the range 0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ − t ⩽ 10.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 is presented. The experiment, using spark chambers and proportional chambers, was performed at the CERN Proton Synchroton.

The differential cross sections of p p elastic scattering at 0.7 GeV/ c were obtained in the range 0.0018<| t |⩽0.0320 GeV 2 . From the interference between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitude, the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude was found to be +0.33±0.04.

Reactions p p → p p and p p → n n were studied at the kinetic energy 230 MeV of incident p by using bubble chamber films. Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.

The differential cross sections of p¯p elastic scattering have been measured at incident beam momenta of 390, 490, 590, 690, and 780 MeV/c. The results are compared with the predictions of various N¯N potential models. None of these models completely explains the present results.
