We have measured the charge asymmetry in like-sign dilepton yields from B^0 B^0-bar meson decays using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find a_ll = [N(l+l+) - N(l-l-)]/[N(l+l+) + N[l-l-)] = +0.013 +/- 0.050 +/- 0.005 . We combine this result with a previous, independent measurement and obtain Re(epsilon_B)/(1+|epsilon_B|^2) = +0.0035 +/- 0.0103 +/- 0.0015 (uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively) for the CP impurity parameter, epsilon_B.

Using 13.6/fb of continuum two-jet e+e- -> ccbar events collected with the CLEO detector, we have searched for baryon number correlations at the primary quark level. We have measured the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced in the hemisphere opposite a /\c- relative to the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced opposite an anticharmed meson Dbar; in all cases, the reconstructed hadrons must have momentum greater than 2.3 GeV/c. We find that, given a /\c- (reconstructed in five different decay modes), a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere (0.72+/-0.11)% of the time (not corrected for efficiency). By contrast, given a Dbar in one hemisphere, a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere only (0.21+/-0.02)% of the time. Normalized to the total number of either /\c- or Dbar ``tags'', it is therefore 3.52+/-0.45+/-0.42 times more likely to find a /\c+ opposite a /\c- than a Dbar meson. This enhancement is not observed in the JETSET 7.3 e+e- -> ccbar Monte Carlo simulation.

We report on a search for a supersymmetric $\tilde{B}$ meson with mass between 3.5 and 4.5 GeV/$c^2$ using 4.52 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity produced at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV, just below the $e^+e^-\to B\bar{B}$ threshold, and collected with the CLEO detector. We find no evidence for a light scalar bottom quark.

A study of charm fragmentation into $D_s^{*+}$ and $D_s^+$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$=10.5 GeV is presented. This study using $4.72 \pm 0.05$ fb$^{-1}$ of CLEO II data reports measurements of the cross-sections $\sigma(D_s^{*+})$ and $\sigma(D_s^+)$ in momentum regions above $x=0.44$, where $x$ is the $D_s$ momentum divided by the maximum kinematically allowed $D_s$ momentum. The /\c->pKpi yield has been measured in a sample of two-jet continuum events containing a both an anticharm tag (Dbar) as well as an antiproton (e+e- -> Dbar pbar X), with the antiproton in the hemisphere opposite the Dbar. Under the hypothesis that such selection criteria tag e+e- -> Dbar pbar (/\c) X events, the /\c->pkpi branching fraction can be determined by measuring the pkpi yield in the same hemisphere as the antiprotons in our Dbar pbar X sample. Combining our results from three independent types of anticharm tags, we obtain B(/\c->pKpi)=(5.0+/-0.5+/-1.2)%

We have used the CLEO II detector to study the multiplicity of charged particles in the decays of B mesons produced at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. Using a sample of 1.5 x 10^6 B meson pairs, we find the mean inclusive charged particle multiplicity to be 10.71 +- 0.02 +0.21/-0.15 for the decay of the pair. This corresponds to a mean multiplicity of 5.36 +- 0.01 +0.11/-0.08 for a single B meson. Using the same data sample, we have also extracted the mean multiplicities in semileptonic and nonleptonic decays. We measure a mean of 7.82 +- 0.05 +0.21/-0.19 charged particles per $B\bar{B}$ decay when both mesons decay semileptonically. When neither B meson decays semileptonically, we measure a mean charged particle multiplicity of 11.62 +- 0.04 +0.24/-0.18 per $B\bar{B}$ pair.

Using data recorded by the CLEO II detector at CESR, we report evidence for two new charmed baryons, one decaying into $\Xi_c^+\pi^+\pi^-$ via an intermediate $\Xi_c^{*0}$, and its isospin partner decaying into $\Xi_c^0\pi^+\pi^-$ via an intermediate $\Xi_c^{*+}$. We measure the mass differences of the two states to be $M(\Xi_c^+\pi^+\pi^-)-M(\Xi_c^+)=$ $348.6\pm0.6\pm1.0$ MeV, and $M(\Xi_c^0\pi^+\pi^-)-M(\Xi_c^0)=$ $347.2\pm0.7\pm2.0$ MeV. We interpret these new states as the $J^P = {3 \over{2}}^- $ $\Xi_{c1}$ particles, the charmed-strange analogues of the $\Lambda_{c1}^+(2625)$.

Using a sample of 3.3 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we measure the branching fraction for B -> rho l nu, |V_ub|, and the partial rate (Delta Gamma) in three bins of q^2 = (p_B-p_rho)^2. The quoted errors are statistical, systematic, and theoretical. The method is sensitive primarily to B -> rho l nu decays with leptons in the energy range above 2.3 GeV. Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: $R_{\gamma} \equiv \Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow \gamma gg)/\Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow ggg) = (2.75 \pm 0.04(stat.) \pm 0.15(syst.))%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}= 233 \pm 11 \pm 59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant $\alpha_{s}(M_{\Upsilon(1S)}) = 0.163 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.014$, or $\alpha_{s}(M_{Z}) = 0.110 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.007$.

This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B→Ds+X branching fraction as well as the B+→Ds(*)+D¯(*)0 and B0→Ds(*)+D(*)− branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B→Ds+X)=(12.11±0.39±0.88±1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive Ds+ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for fDs, the Ds+ decay constant. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report the first observation of a narrow state decaying into $\Xi_c~+\pi~-$. Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have observed two charmed states, where the higher mass state decays to D 0 π + and to D ∗0 π + , while the lower mass state decays to D ∗0 π + , but not to D 0 π + . The masses and widths were measured to be 2425±2±2 MeV/c 2 and 26 −7−4 +8+4 MeV/c 2 for the lower mass state, and 2463±3±3 MeV/c 2 and 27 −8−5 +11+5 MeV/c 2 for the higher mass state. Properties of these states, including their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments have been studied. The results of this analysis support the identification of these states as the charged L = 1 D 1 (2420) + and D 2 ∗ (2460) + , respectively. The isospin mass splittings between these states and their neutral partners have also been measured. This is the first full reconstruction of any decay mode of the D 1 (2420) + and the first observation of the decay of D 2 ∗ (2460) + to D ∗0 π + .

We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

We report results on the differential and total cross sections for inclusive production of the charmed particles D*+, D*0, D0, D+, Ds, and Λc in e+e− annihilations at √s=10.55 GeV. Widely used quark fragmentation models are discussed and compared with the measured charmed-particle momentum distributions. This comparison, as well as that with measurements at other center-of-mass energies, shows the need to take QCD corrections into account and their importance for a correct interpretation of the model parameters. The observed rate of D0 and D+ production is compared to the expected total charm production cross section. We measure the probability of a charmed meson being produced as a vector meson and the D*+ decay branching fraction into D0π+.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B→ψX to be (1.09±0.16±0.21)%, and the exclusive branching ratios for B−→ψK− and B¯ ¯0 *0 to be (0.09±0.05)% and (0.41±0.18)%, respectively. The mass difference between neutral and charged B mesons is 1.1±2.1 MeV, while the difference between the mass of Υ(4S) and twice the mean B-meson mass is 18.5±3.0 MeV. The ψ momentum distribution implies a substantial two-body decay (in agreement with direct measurements), but also some combination of B→ψX with MX>1.5 GeV, and B→ψ’X.

We present evidence for inclusive F-meson production in B-meson decay. The product branching fraction B(B→FX)B(F+→φπ+) is measured to be 0.0038±0.010. The F momentum spectrum indicates the presence of a large component of two-body final states in the decay B→FX.

We have observed decays of the ϒ(1S) into hadronic final states containing high-energy photons. These are interpreted as coming from the decay ϒ(1S)→γ+gluon+gluon. We compare the shape of the observed photon energy spectrum with several theoretical predictions and deduce the value of the strong-coupling constant αs and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS― (MS― denotes the modified minimal-subtraction scheme) associated with each prediction.

We have observed Λc baryons in nonresonant e+e− annihilation at energies around s=10.5 GeV through their decay to Λπ+π+π−. We measure the branching fraction to be (2.8 ± 0.7 ± 1.1)%. The momentum spectrum of the Λc is similar to that of charmed mesons, providing a constraint on models of charmed-quark hadronization.

Measurements of the e+e− cross section above BB¯ threshold are reported. Structures are observed which could be the ϒ(5S) and ϒ(6S) resonances. The masses and widths are given and compared with various potential-model predictions. Average charged multiplicities and inclusive lepton yields are also presented.

We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle correlations in decays of the Υ(1S) resonance and in nonresonant annihilations of electrons and positrons at center-of-mass energy 10.49 GeV, just below BB¯ threshold. These data were obtained using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and provide information on the production of π, K, ρ, K*, φ, p, Λ, and Ξ in quark and gluon jets. The average multiplicity of hadrons per event for upsilon decays (compared with continuum annihilations) is 11.4 (10.5) pions, 2.4 (2.2) kaons, 0.6 (0.5) ρ0, 1.2 (0.8) K*, 0.6 (0.4) protons and antiprotons, 0.15 (0.08) φ, 0.19 (0.07) Λ and Λ¯, and 0.016 (0.005) Ξ− and Ξ¯ +. We have also seen evidence for η and f0 production. The most significant differences between upsilon and continuum final states are (1) the inclusive energy spectra fall off more rapidly with increasing particle energy in upsilon decays, (2) the production of heavier particles, especially baryons, is not as strongly suppressed in upsilon decays, and (3) baryon and antibaryon are more likely to be correlated at long range in upsilon decay than in continuum events.

We report measurements from the CLEO detector of the rate of Ξ and Λ production in e+e− interactions in the upsilon region. Hyperon production from the decay of the ϒ(1s) is compared with continuum e+e− data. The ratio of the production rates of Λ (and Λ―) to K0 (and K―0) on the ϒ(1s) is 0.21 ± 0.03, much larger than in the continuum, 0.07 ± 0.01. The ratios of the production rates of the Ξ and Λ are comparable, 0.10±0.02 [ϒ(1S)] and 0.07 ± 0.02 (continuum). We discuss some implications of the data for gluon and quark fragmentation models.

We have used the momentum spectrum of leptons produced in semileptonic B-meson decays to set a 90%-confidence-level upper limit on Γ(b→ulν)Γ(b→clν) of 4%. We also measure the semileptonic branching fractions of the B meson to be (12.0±0.7±0.5)% for electrons and (10.8±0.6±1.0)% for muons.

We report measurements made with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of the total cross section for e+e−→hadrons at the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S), and in the nearby nonresonant continuum. We find R=3.77±0.06 (statistical) ± 0.24 (systematic) for the ratio of the nonresonant hadronic cross section to the cross section for muon-pair production at a center-of-mass total energy W=10.4 GeV. For the leptonic decay widths Γee of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) we obtain 1.30±0.05±0.08, 0.52±0.03±0.04, and 0.42±0.04±0.03 keV, respectively.

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged D* and neutral D mesons from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the energy region near the ϒ(4S) resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the D* and D mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the D* contribution.

The inclusive branching fraction for B-meson decay into D0 mesons and the momentum spectrum of the D0's have been measured. 0.8±0.2±0.2 D0 per B decay was found. The shape of the spectrum suggests an interesting picture of B-meson decay.

Evidence is presented for a narrow meson resonance of mass 1970±5±5 MeV produced in continuum e+e− annihilations at s of 10.5 GeV, and decaying into a ϕ and a charged π.

In a sample of B mesons from the decay of the ϒ(4S) produced in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, inclusive protons, antiprotons, lambdas, and antilambdas have been observed. Lower limits to the B-to-baryon branching ratios are derived.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the authors have measured the leptonic branching fractions, Bμμ, of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 2.7±0.3±0.3%, 1.9±1.3±0.5%, and 3.3±1.3±0.7%, respectively. Combining these values of Bμμ with previous measurements of the leptonic widths of these resonances, the authors find the total widths of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 48±4±4, 27±17±6, and 13±4±3 keV.
