The excitation functions for positive pion production from hydrogen have been obtained in the energy region from 230 Mev to 450 Mev and at laboratory pion angles of 24°, 38°, 53°, 73°, 93°, 115°, 140°, and 160°. The pions are detected and identified by measuring their range and ionization in a scintillation counter telescope. The above data are analyzed to give the angular distributions in the center-of-momentum system, and a least-squares analysis made to determine coefficients in σ(θ)=A+Bcosθ+Ccos2θ. The total cross section shows a peak at 300 Mev of magnitude 2.20×10−28 cm2. The coefficient B passes through a maximum negative value at 250 Mev and then passes through zero at 325 Mev and remains positive up to the highest energy measured.

The photoproduction of neutral π mesons from hydrogen has been studied at the California Institute of Technology Synchrotron Laboratory by detecting recoil protons from a liquid hydrogen target irradiated by the synchrotron bremsstrahlung beam. The recoil protons were detected by a five-counter telescope. Data were taken at proton laboratory angles of 19°, 30°, 40°, 50°, and 60° at proton energies corresponding to photon energies of 600, 700, and 800 Mev. Angular distribution data are produced at these three energies and fitted with functions of the form: A+Bcosθπ′+Ccos2θπ′. These functions are qualitatively like those at lower energies; B is small and −AC is roughly 1.25. The total cross section is found to have a minimum at about 600 Mev, being slightly larger at 700 and 800 Mev.

The reaction γ+p→π0+p has been studied in three adjacent 100-Mev energy intervals between 900 and 1200 Mev and at pion center-of-mass angles of 47°, 90°, and 125°. The reaction was observed as a coincidence between the recoil proton and one of the photons from the meson's decay. The kinematics were determined by the energy of the incident photon and the angle of the recoil proton. The differential cross sections at the forward and backward angles show pronounced maxima near 1050 Mev, while the 90° cross sections decrease slowly with energy. The estimated total cross sections suggest a narrow maximum near 1050 Mev. These features are consistent with the previously proposed existence of a resonant state in the pion-nucleon system of total angular momentum 52.

The elastic electron-proton scattering cross section has been measured at laboratory angles between 90° and 144° and for values of the four-momentum transfer squared between 25 and 45 F−2 (incident electron laboratory energies from 830 to 1360 MeV). Both the scattered electrons and the recoil protons were momentum analyzed and counted in coincidence, making possible background-free measurements down to cross sections of the order of 10−35 cm2/sr. The data are consistent with the Rosenbluth formula, and the resulting form factors tie on well with previous measurements at lower momentum transfer, continuing the established trend.

The elastic, the pion-production, and the multipion-annihilation cross sections for antiproton-proton interactions at 3.28 and 3.66 BeV/c incident antiproton momenta have been measured. A comparison of the elastic interactions at 3.28 BeV/c with a purely-absorbing disc optical model gave a best value for the radius of interaction of 1.3 F. The real part of the forward scattering amplitude has been found to be less than 20% of the imaginary part. A study of the asymmetries in double elastic scatters yielded a value for a polarizing power of the hydrogen consistent with zero when averaged over production angles.

Angular distributions are presented for p¯−p elastic scattering at 8 and 16 GeV/c for |t|<1.3 (GeV/c)2. At both energies there is structure in the differential cross sections in the region 0.5<~|t|<~1.0 (GeV/c)2, similar to that observed at lower energies. The diffraction peak continues to expand with increasing incident momentum.

This paper presents differential cross sections for backward π−p elastic scattering in the angular region −0.55≥cosθc.m.≥−0.98 for five incident momenta: 2.38, 2.50, 2.65, 2.80, and 3.00 GeV/c. The structure of the angular distribution undergoes a marked change over this momentum interval. A pronounced dip near 180°, which is seen for momenta ≲2.50 GeV/c, becomes a sharp peak at 2.80 and 3.00 GeV/c. A minimum in the cross section at cosθc.m.≃−0.7 is indicated at all momenta. In addition, a dip in the differential cross section appears at cosθc.m.≃−0.92 at 3.00 GeV/c. A good fit to the data from 2.1 to 3.0 GeV/c is obtained with a direct-channel resonance model.

The results of the experiment searching for quarks with charge − 1 3 and 2 3 produced by 70 GeV protons on an aluminium target at zero angle are reported. For the selection of quarks the system of spectrometric scintillation counters, time-of-flight spectrometer, gas Cerenkov threshold counter and magnetic spectrometer with spark chambers were used. In the range of masses available at the IHEP accelerator, quarks were not found. The upper limit estimation of the differential cross-section for quark production with mass ⩽ 5 GeV /c 2− and charge −1 3 is 7×10 −38 cm 2 / ster GeV /c (with 90% confidence level). The total cross-section for quark production with charge −1 3 and mass 4.5–5 GeV /c 2 does not exceed 3×10 −39 cm 2 .

Differential cross sections are presented for pion-proton elastic scattering in the angular range −0.6≳cosθc.m.≳−0.98 at 15 incident π+ momenta from 2.18−5.25 GeVc. The angular distributions rise steeply near 180° at all momenta. For laboratory momenta ≳2.75 GeVc they show a minimum at u≈−0.17 (GeVc)2 and a broad maximum near u≈−0.6 (GeVc)2. When the data are plotted versus s, for fixed u, a strong signal from the Δ(2420) resonance is observed. The data are compared with a direct-channel resonance model and with a Regge model which considers the exchange of the Nα, Nγ, and Δδ Regge trajectories. The qualitative success of both the direct-channel resonance model and the Regge model lends support to the concept of duality.

Total cross sections for π−p→ΛK0 have been measured using optical spark chambers from threshold to 1.13−GeVc beam momentum in 19−MeVc intervals, but with a 1−MeVc resolution in the regions of the ΛK and ΣK thresholds. The behavior near ΛK threshold indicates a significant s-wave contribution, but this experiment is unable to resolve any cusplike behavior in the region of the ΣK thresholds. The cross section shows a broad peak in the vicinity of 1.05−GeVc beam momentum.

3 H̃e nuclei were observed in the negative beam, produced by 70 GeV protons on an Al target. Five 3 H̃e have been identified among 2.4 · 10 11 particles that passed through the apparatus. Scintillation and Čerenkov counters were used to measure the electrical charge and velocity of particles. The mass of 3 H̃e is found to be M 3 H ̃ e = (1.00 ± 0.03)3m p , the charge is z = (0.99 ± 0.03)2 e . The ratio of differential production cross sections of 3 H ̃ e (P = 20 GeV /c) and π − (P = 10 GeV/c ) equals 2 · 10 −11 . Differential cross sections have been measured for nucleon-isobar production and elastic scattering in p−p interactions from 6.2 to 29.7 GeVc in the laboratory angle range 8<θsc<265 mrad. N*' s at 1236, 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV were observed. Computer fits to the mass spectra under varying assumptions of resonance and background shapes show that conclusions on t and s dependence are only slightly affected despite typical variations in absolute normalization of ± 35%. Logarithmic t slopes in the small- |t| range are ∼15 (GeVc)−2 for the N*(1410), ∼5 (GeVc)−2 for the N*'s at 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV, and ∼9 (GeVc)−2 for elastic scattering. Also for the small- |t| data, cross sections for N*'s at 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV and for elastic scattering vary only slightly with Pinc consistent with the dominance of Pomeranchuk exchange and with diffraction dissociation. A fit of N*(1690) total cross sections to the form σ∝P−n gives n=0.34±0.06, while for elastic scattering n=0.20±0.05. For the N*(1690) the effective Regge trajectory has the slope αeff′(0)=0.38±0.17. When compared with N* production in π−, K−, and p¯ beams these data also agree with approximate factorization of the Pomeranchuk trajectory. N*(1236) cross sections are consistent with other measurements at similar momenta. For −t>1 (GeVc)−2, elastic scattering cross sections decrease approximately as Pinc−2, and they and N*(1500)− and N*(1690)− production cross sections have t slopes consistent with 1.6 (GeVc)−2.

We present herein the initial results of a large-angle elastic p−p polarization experiment which is now in progress at the Argonne ZGS (Zero-Gradient Synchrotron) accelerator. Data for the incident proton momentum of 5.15 GeVc are presented for 30∘≲θc.m.≲90∘. These results, which extend to t≈−4.0(GeVc)2, represent the first high-statistics p−p polarization measurements for |t| values greater than ∼2.5 (GeVc)2. We observe a minimum in the polarization near t=−0.8(GeVc)2, a smooth increase in the polarization until a maximum is attained near t=−1.8(GeVc)2, and then a monotonic decline in the polarization until the value of zero is reached at θc.m.=90∘. The data are analyzed in terms of an optical model.

The reaction π−p→X−p, X−→ηπ−, η→γγ has been studied in an optical spark-chamber experiment at the Argonne ZGS (Zero Gradient Synchrotron) at a beam momentum of 6.0 GeV/c and with 0.27≤|t|≤0.42 (GeV/c)2. The ηπ mass spectrum contains about 1400 events in the mass range 0.80<M(ηπ)<1.55 GeV/c2, and is dominated by approximately 1000 events of the type A2−→ηπ−. No structure is discernible within the A2 mass spectrum for an experimental resolution of 7.1 MeV/c2 [16.7 MeV/c2 FWHM (full width at half maximum)]. A single D-wave Breit-Wigner distribution fits the data with a high confidence level, yielding for the A2 the parameters M0=1.323±0.003 GeV/c2 and Γ0=0.108±0.009 GeV/c2. The angular distribution of the decay A2−→ηπ− is analyzed and the resultant density matrix elements have the values ρ11=0.45±0.02, ρ1−1=0.45±0.04, and ρ00=0.09±0.04. All other elements are consistent with zero. Finally, the missing-mass spectrum in the region of the A2 is presented. A signal of 230 events above background per 5-MeV/c2 interval is observed at the A2 peak, with a signal to background ratio of greater than 1:1. A single D-wave Breit-Wigner distribution together with a quadratic background fits the data well, with the parameters for the A2 being M0=1.324±0.003 GeV/c2 and Γ0=0.104±0.009 GeV/c2. Both A2 mass spectra are incompatible with the dipole shape.

Employing a neutral kaon beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron, a high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, and a neutron detector, differential cross sections have been obtained in the forward direction [0.045<|t|<0.18 (GeV/c)2] for the reaction KL0p→K+n. Previous studies of the time-reversed process in deuterium, K+d→K0p(p), have not yielded direct cross-section measurements in the forward direction because there is an inhibition of the non-spin-flip process in deuterium due to the Pauli exclusion principle. Nevertheless, our data are in agreement with the extracted free-neutron cross sections of deuterium studies as determined from the impulse and closure approximations.
