Measurement of the Z0 Mass and Width with the OPAL Detector at LEP

We report an experimental determination of the cross section for e + e − → hadrons from a scan around the Z 0 pole. On the basis of 4350 hadronic events collected over seven energy points between 89.26 GeV and 93.26 GeV we obtain a mass of m z =91.01±0.05±0.05 GeV, and a total decay width of Γ z =2.60±0.13 GeV. In the context of the standard model t these results imply 3.1 ± 0.4 neutrino generations.

Determination of the Number of Light Neutrino Species

The cross-section for e + e − → hadrons in the vicinity of the Z boson peak has been measured with the ALEPH detector at the CERN Large Electron Positron collider, LEP. Measurements of the Z mass, M z = (91.174±0.070) GeV, the Z width Γ z =(2.68±0.15) GeV, and of the peak hadronic cross-section, σ had peak =(29.3±1.2) nb, are presented. With the constraints of the standard electroweak model, the number of light neutrino species is found to be N v =3.27±0.30. this results rules out of the possibility of a fourth type of light neutrino at 98% CL.

Studies of Jet Production Rates in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at $e$({CM}) = 29-{GeV}

Production rates of multijet hadronic final states are studied ine+e− annihilation at 29 GeV center of mass energy. QCD shower model calculations with exact first order matrix element weighting at the first gluon vertex are capable of reproducing the observed multijet event rates over a large range of jet pair masses. The method used to reconstruct jets is well suited for directly comparing experimental jet rates with parton rates calculated in perturbative QCD. Evidence for the energy dependene of αs is obtained by comparing the observed production rates of 3-jet events with results of similar studies performed at higher center of mass energies.

Pt of the leptons is determined relative to the thrust axis. B-DECAY, C-DECAY, C-SECONDARY and BKG are corresponded to fractions of leptons originationg from primary BQ deacy, primary CQ decay, secondary decay, and from background.


Limits on $J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ Production in $e^+ e^-$ Interactions at $\sqrt{s}=29$-{GeV}

A search has been made for the inclusive production of J ψ (3.1) and ϒ (9.4) mesons in e + e − interactions at 29 GeV, via their decay into two leptons. No signal is observed in the J ψ region, nor in the ϒ region. The limits on the cross sections are σ ( e + e − → ψX ) < 4.4 × 10 −36 cm 2 , and σ ( e + e − → ϒX ) < 4.7 × 10 −36 cm 2 . The same data yield limits on the branching ratios for the b quark BR ( b → ψX ) < 4.9% and BR ( b → ℓ + ℓ − X ) < 0.8%.

Electroproduction of $\pi^0$ Mesons in the Resonance Region at $q^2=1.0$-{GeV}/$c^2$

Data are presented for the reaction ep → ep π 0 at a nominal momentum transfer squared of 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The data were obtained using an extracted electron beam from NINA and two magnetic spectrometers for coincidence detection of the electron and proton. Differential cross sections have been measured for isobar masses in the range 1.19–1.73 GeV/ c 2 .
