The two-jet differential cross section d3σ(p¯p→jet 1+jet 2+X)/dEtdη1dη2, averaged over -0.6≤η1≤0.6, at √s =1.8 TeV, has been measured in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The predictions of leading-order quantum chromodynamics for most choices of structure functions show agreement with the data.

We present evidence for the exclusive reaction e+e−→Ds±Ds*∓, observed with the Mark III detector at the SLAC storage ring SPEAR. The Ds± is reconstructed in the φπ± decay mode, while the Ds*∓ is detected as a narrow peak in the recoil-mass distribution. The mass of the Ds* is found to be 2109.3±2.1±3.1 MeV/c2, yielding a Ds*−Ds mass difference of 137.9±2.1±4.3 MeV/c2. The width of the Ds* is <22 MeV/c2 at the 90%-confidence level. The observed signal corresponds to σ(e+e−→Ds+Ds*−+Ds−Ds*+)B(Ds+→φπ+)=30±6±11 pb at s=4.14 GeV.

A significant rate of forward proton and antiproton production has been observed in 120 and 280 GeV muon-proton scattering. The z and p T 2 distributions are presented. The dependence of the normalized production cross section on the muon variables x and Q 2 is studied.

We have searched the missing-mass spectrum of the reaction pp→K+K+X for a narrow six-quark resonance in the mass range 2.0-2.5 GeV/c2. No narrow structure was observed. Upper limits for the production cross section of such a state depend upon mass and vary from 30 to 130 nb.

Exclusive Vector Meson Production in Muon - Proton Scattering

From a muon-proton scattering experiment with a streamer chamber at the Stanford Linear Accelerator we present results in the ranges 0.3<Q2<4.7 GeV2 and 1.7<W<4.7 GeV for the reactions μ+p→μpV where V is a vector meson (ρ0, ω, or φ). It is shown that in ρ production the skewing parameter and the longitudinal-transverse ratio change significantly as Q2 increases above 1 GeV2. The cross section for ρ0 production as a function of Q2 falls below the vector-meson-dominance prediction. The ratio of the cross section for exclusive vector-meson production to the total cross section falls by a factor of 10 between photoproduction and a Q2 of 2 GeV2, yet the ratio of ω to ρ production remains constant at the photoproduction value out to Q2>2 GeV2.

In a new measurement of proton total cross sections at 3.00 GeV/c, the p−d total cross section is found to be lower than a previous measurement by 1.17±0.09 mb. This implies a corresponding new value for the total cross section for I=0 which is 2.18±0.27 mb lower than the previous value. Possible sources of systematic error are discussed.

Total cross-sections of K+- mesons and anti-protons on nucleons up to 3.3-GeV/c

Total cross sections of K± and p¯ on hydrogen and deuterium were measured in a standard transmission experiment with statistical precisions of the order of 0.05-0.25%. Data were obtained in the momentum range 2.45-3.30 GeV/c for K−N, 1.55-3.30 GeV/c for K+N, and 1.00-3.30 GeV/c for p¯N. Cross sections for the pure isotopic spin states are obtained using a procedure for the deuterium data which takes into account Fermi motion and the shadow effect. Evidence for the following new structures was found: Y1*(2455), Y1*(2620), Y0*(2585), Z1*(2150), Z1*(2500), π1*(2290), π1*(2350), and π0*(2375).
