We present a study of the inclusive ω and η′ production based on 3.1 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the L3 detector at LEP during 1991–1994. The production rates per hadronic Z decay have been measured to be 1.17±0.17 ω mesons and 0.25±0.04 η′ mesons. The production rates and the differential cross sections have been compared with predictions of the JETSET and the HERWIG Monte Carlo models. We have observed that the differential cross sections can be described by an analytical quantum chromodynamics calculation.

Tuning and test of fragmentation models based on identified particles and precision event shape data.

Z.Phys.C 73 (1996) 11-60, 1996.
Inspire Record 424112 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47800

Event shape and charged particle inclusive distributions are measured using 750000 decays of the Z to hadrons from the DELPHI detector at LEP. These precise data allow a decisive confrontation with models of the hadronization process. Improved tunings of the JETSET, ARIADNE and HERWIG parton shower models and the JETSET matrix element model are obtained by fitting the models to these DELPHI data as well as to identified particle distributions from all LEP experiments. The description of the data distributions by the models is critically reviewed with special importance attributed to identified particles.

Measurement of eta production in two and three jet events from hadronic Z decays at LEP

The L3 collaboration Acciarri, M. ; Adam, A. ; Adriani, O. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 371 (1996) 126-136, 1996.
Inspire Record 404602 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48038

The inclusive production of η mesons has been studied using 1.6 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector. The η multiplicity per event, the multiplicity for two-jet and three-jet events separately, and the multiplicity in each jet have been measured and compared with the predictions of different Monte Carlo programs. The momentum spectra of η in each jet have also been measured. We observe that the measured η momentum spectrum in quark-enriched jets agrees well with the Monte Carlo prediction while in gluon-enriched jets it is harder than that predicted by the Monte Carlo models.

A Measurement of the tau leptonic branching fractions

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adye, T. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 357 (1995) 715-724, 1995.
Inspire Record 398321 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48138

A sample of 25000 Z 0 → τ + τ − events collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is used to measure the leptonic branching fractions of the τ lepton. The results are B(τ → eν ν ) = (17.51 ± 0.39) % and B(τ → μν ν ) = (17.02 ± 0.31) %. The ratio of the muon and electron couplings to the weak charged current is measured to be g μ g e = 1.000 ± 0.013 , satisfying e-μ universality. The leptonic branching fraction corrected to the value for a massless lepton, assuming e-μ universality, is found to be B(τ → lν ν ) = (17.50 ± 0.25) %.

Nuclear structure function in carbon near x = 1

Z.Phys.C 63 (1994) 29-36, 1994.
Inspire Record 374300 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48235

Data from deep inelastic scattering of 200 GeV muons on a carbon target with squared four-momentum transfer 52 GeV2≤Q2≤200 GeV2 were analysed in the region of the Bjorken variable close tox=1, which is the kinematic limit for scattering on a free nucleon. At this value ofx, the carbon structure function is found to beF2C≈1.2·10−4. Thex dependence of the structure function forx>0.8 is well described by an exponentialF2C∞exp(−sx) withs=16.5±0.6.

Measurement of inclusive production of neutral hadrons from Z decays

The L3 collaboration Acciarri, M. ; Adam, A. ; Adriani, O. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 328 (1994) 223-233, 1994.
Inspire Record 374698 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48189

We present a study of the inclusive production of π 0 , η, K s 0 and Λ based on 929,000 hadronic Z decays recorded with the L3 detector at LEP. The measured inclusive momentum distributions have been compared with predictions from parton shower models as well as an analytical Quantum Chromodynamics calculation. Comparing to low energy e + e - data, we find that QCD describes the energy evolution of the hadron spectrum.

Measurement of inclusive eta production in hadronic decays of the Z0

The L3 collaboration Adriani, O. ; Aguilar-Benitez, M. ; Ahlen, S. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 286 (1992) 403-412, 1992.
Inspire Record 336180 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29161

We present a study of the inclusive η production based on 300 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. The measured inclusive momentum distribution can be reproduced by parton shower Monte Carlo programs and also by an analytical QCD calculation. Comparing our results with low energy e + e − data, we find that QCD describes both the shape and the energy evolution of the η spectrum. The comparison of η production rates in quark- and gluon-enriched jet samples does not show statistically significant evidence for more abundant production of η mesons in gluon fragmentation.

The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D ∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e + e - →e + e - D ∗± X, with D ∗± →D O π +- , D O →K -+ π ± , and either zero or one outgoing e ± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e + e - → e + e - c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

We present results on a high statistics study of the nucleon structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and R = σ L / σ T measured in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a deuterium target. The analysis is based on 8×10 5 events after all cuts, recorded at beam energies of 120, 200 and 280 GeV in the kinematic range 0.06⩽ × ⩽0.80 and 8GeV 2 ⩽ Q 2 ⩽260GeV 2 . Scaling violations observed in the data are in agreement with predictions of perturbative QCD and allow to determine the QCD mass scale parameter Λ.

High statistics data on the structure functions F 2 of the proton and the deutron measured with the same apparatus in deep inelastic muon scattering are used to study the ratio of structure functions of neutron and proton F 2 n / F 2 p and their difference F 2 p - F 2 n . Both measurements are consistent with predictions of the quark-parton model and of QCD.
