The charged particle multiplicities of the quark and gluon jets in the three-fold symmetric e + e − → q q g events at √ s = 29 GeV have been studied using the high resolution spectrometer at PEP. A value of 〈 n 〉 g = 6.7 −2.1 +1.1 ±1.0 for gluon jet s with an energy of 9.7 −2.0 +1.5 GeV is measured. The ratio, 〈 n 〉 g /〈 n 〉 q , is 1.29 −0.41 +0.21 ±0.20, which i s significantly lower than the value of 9 4 naively expected from the ration of the gluon-to-quark color charges.

Nucl.Phys.B 264 (1986) 739-751, 1986.
Inspire Record 218464 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33712

Inclusive production of the Δ (1232) resonance has been measured in 280 GeV/ c muon-proton interactions. The production of the Δ ++ as a function of the variables χ BJ , W , Q 2 , χ F and p T 2 is investigated. The average Δ ++ multiplicity is found to be smaller, by a factor of 6.2 ± 1.2, than the average multiplicity of protons. An upper limit for Δ 0 production is obtained. The net hadronic charge distribution for events with a Δ ++ is presented. The results are compared to the predictions of the Lund and Fire string models.

For the reaction π−N→V0X, where V0 is a Ks0, Λ, and Λ¯ and X are charged particles, we measured the transverse- and longitudinal-momentum distributions, and inclusive cross sections for the V0 and for K*±(892), Σ±(1385), and Ξ±(1321). We compare our results with predictions of quark-counting rules, and conclude that valence quarks play an important role in strange-particle production.

Inspire Record 217503 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23508

The two-photon production of the η meson has been observed, and a value has been determined for the two-photon η decay width by a measurement of the cross section σ(e+e−→e+e−η) where η→γγ. The measurement was made with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− collider PEP, with an accumulated data sample of 64.5 pb−1. The η→γγ events were both triggered and detected by the pole-tip calorimeter. The measured two-photon η decay width is Γη→γγ=0.64±0.14 (statistical) ±0.13 (systematic) keV, in agreement with earlier similarly determined values.

The production of charmed D* mesons in e+e− annihilations at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV has been studied using the time-projection-chamber (TPC) detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The production cross section, fragmentation function, and forward-backward asymmetry due to electroweak effects are measured, and a limit on D0-D¯0 mixing is determined.

HADRON MULTIPLICITY VARIATION WITH Q**2 AND SCALE BREAKING OF THE HADRON DISTRIBUTIONS IN DEEP INELASTIC MUON - PROTON SCATTERING

Inspire Record 217810 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30328

Measurements are presented of the variation with Q 2 (scaling violation) of the hadron multiplicity in deep inelastic muon-proton scattering. An increase in the average multiplicity of both the charged hadrons and K 0 mesons is observed with increasing Q 2 or x Bj for fixed centre-of-mass energy W . The study of the shape of the effective fragmentation function D h ( z , W , Q 2 ) shows that the increase of the particle yield with Q 2 takes place for low z particles. The variation of the hadron distributions with Q 2 is also studied in the current fragmentation region where a decrease in multiplicity is observed. Such effects are expected from QCD.

Inclusive Charged Particle Production Near the Kinematic Limit in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at 29-{GeV}

Phys.Lett.B 164 (1985) 199-202, 1985.
Inspire Record 17255 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30327

Inclusive production of charged particles has been studied in e + e − annihilation at s s=29 GeV using the high resolution spectrometer at PEP. Differential cross sections are presented in the range of scaled energy 0.1< z <1.0. The data for z <0.5 show the (1− z ) 2 behavior predicted by the dimensional counting rules. Comparisons are made with predictions of the Lund string model and the Webber cluster model.

An analysis of the production ofKS0KS0 andK±Ks0π∓ by two quasi-real photons is presented. The cross section forγγ→K0\(\overline {K^0 } \), which is given for the γγ invariant mass range fromK\(\bar K\) threshold to 2.5 GeV, is dominated by thef′(1525) resonance and an enhancement near theK\(\bar K\) threshold. Upper limits on the product of the two-photon width times the branching ratio intoK\(\bar K\) pairs are given forΘ(1700),h(2030), and ξ(2220). For exclusive two-photon production ofK±Ks0π∓ no significant signal was observed. Upper limits are given on the cross section ofγγ→K+\(\overline {K^0 } \)π− orK−K0π+ between 1.4 and 3.2 GeV and on the product of the γγ width times the branching ratio into theK\(\bar K\)π final states for theηc(2980) and the ι(1440), yieldingΓ(γγ)→i(1440))·BR(i(1440)→K\(\bar K\)π<2.2 keV at 95% C.L.
