We have measured the ratio of inclusive production of η to π0 at transverse momenta above 1.5 GeV/c. Results are presented for various meson and proton beams with momenta of 100, 200, and 300 GeV/c incident upon a hydrogen target. The ηπ0 production ratio is found to be independent of incident beam momentum and of the transverse and longitudinal momenta of production. The ratio for pion- and proton-induced reactions is 0.44 ± 0.05; for kaons, it is 0.74 ± 0.12.

Cross sections and decay distribution moments are presented for the reaction p p → Δ ++ Δ ++ at 3.6 GeV/ c , and compared with previously published data at 9.1 and 12 GeV/ c . With the aid of the quark model, we have isolated the natural and unnatural parity exchange contributions and shown them to accord with expectations based on simple Regge-pole exchanges.

We compare high-transverse-momentum (P⊥) inclusive π0 production from π−, K−, p, and p¯ beams, at 100 and 200 GeV/c, for center-of-mass (c.m.) angles ranging from 2° to 115° and P⊥<4.5 GeV/c. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing P⊥, and changes dramatically with c.m. angle. Also, the ratios σ(K−p→π0X)σ(π−p→π0X) and σ(p¯p→π0X)σ(pp→π0X) are approximately constant. These measurements are consistent with a theoretical viewpoint in which constituents of the incident hadrons undergo a hard-scattering subprocess.

The polarization of the Σ+ has been measured for the line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and K−p→π−Σ+ at 7 and 11.6 GeV/c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. Since the Σ+ decay is observed in the bubble chamber, the trigger of the flash lamps on a fast K+(π−) did not bias the polarization measurements. We find that the Σ+ polarizations from the two reactions have opposite signs but similar magnitudes and are in much better agreement with the predictions of weak exchange degeneracy than previous lower-energy comparisons.

New data are presented for the reaction K − p → Λπ + π − at 11 energies between 1775 and 1957 MeV in the centre-of-mass. New values for the masses and widths of the Σ ± (1385) are given. The differential cross sections and the complete spin density matrices for the reactions K − p → π ± Σ ∓ (1385) were extracted from these data using also the information from the Λ decay. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis has been carried out over the c.m. range 1775–2170 MeV also using data from an earlier experiment. Comparisons between the observed resonant amplitudes and SU(3) and SU(6) W ⊎ O(3) predictions have been made.

LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL COEFFICIENTS FOR ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION OF CROSS SECTION.
LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL COEFFICIENTS FOR ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION OF DENSITY MATRIX ELEMENT RHO(MM=33,P=4,XYZ=SH).
We have measured in a single experimental setup the differential cross sections and polarizations of the Y*(1385) produced in the two line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Y*(1385) (260 eV/μb) and K−p→π−Y*(1385) (180 eV/μb) at 11.5 GeV/c. We compare these results to Σ+ production in the same experiment. The data have been derived from a triggered bubble-chamber experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. We find that both helicity-flip-dominated (Y*) and helicity-nonflip-dominated (Σ) processes are consistent with weak-exchange-degeneracy predictions.

We present data for the single-pion production final states K 0 π − p, K − π 0 p and K − π + n from K − p interactions at 11 c.m. energies between 1775 and 1957 MeV. Using the K 0 π − p events the branching ratio (K s 0 → π + π − /K s 0 → all) has been determined to be 0.657 ± 0.011. New values have also been determined for the masses and widths of the K ∗0 (890) and the K ∗− (8990). These give a value of 1.5 ± 1.5 MeV for the electromagnetic mass splitting of the K ∗ . Differential cross sections and the spin-density matrix elements have been extracted for the reactions K − p → K ∗− p and K − p → K ∗0 n . An energy dependent partial-wave analysis of the K ∗ N channel from threshold up to 2170 MeV c.m. energy has been carried out yielding values for 17 resonant amplitudes for the expected Y ∗ 's and a new resonance, the S01(2030).

We have searched the missing-mass spectrum of the reaction pp→K+K+X for a narrow six-quark resonance in the mass range 2.0-2.5 GeV/c2. No narrow structure was observed. Upper limits for the production cross section of such a state depend upon mass and vary from 30 to 130 nb.

We present data on π0 and η inclusive production from 100-GeV/c π±p collisions in the kinematic region x>~0.7 and 0<−t≲4 (GeV/c)2. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of triple-Regge theory and we have extracted the ρ and A2 trajectories out to −t=4 (GeV/c)2.

The inclusive cross section for larger p T π 0 production near 90° in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR is presented for centre-of-mass energies 30.7, 53.1 and 62.4 GeV. The data are inconsistent with scaling of the form p T − n F ( x T ), with constant n or with n allowed to depend on x T = 2p T / s . For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. However, for 7.5 < p T < 14.0 GeV/ c the value becomes n = 5.1 ± 0.4.
