The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} =7}$TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity $\eta$. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the $\eta$ ranges $-2.5<\eta<-2.0$ and $2.0<\eta<4.5$. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of $\eta$. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

Compensation of transverse momentum is studied in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. SignificantpT-transfer is found between c.m.s. hemispheres. With respect to the beam axis transverse momentum is compensated over the whole event, with respect to the sphericity axis mainly within one hemisphere. The highestpT in the event is mainly compensated by increased multiplicity. The QGSM and FRITIOF models qualitatively reproduce these effects, but important differences are observed.

The differential cross sections for antiproton elastic scattering on 4 He at 192.8 MeV/ c are measured. The annihilation cross section σ a = (377.6 ± 8.0) mb, the elastic cross section σ el = (206.3 ± 6.6) mb and the total p 4 He interaction cross section σ tot = (583.9 ± 10.4) mb are determined. The ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward p 4 He amplitude is found: π =−0.17± 0.33 0.24 . Partial wave analysis reveals that the S, P and D waves are essential in this energy region.

Average numbers of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 (890) and K ∗0 (890) produced in peripheral collisions (with the number of “grey” protons n g ⩽2) of K + with Al and of π + with Al and Au nuclei at 250 GeV/ c are measured in the EHS(NA22) experiment at the CERN SPS. Multiplicity, inclusive, correlation and collective characteristics of multiparticle production processes inK+ Al,K+ Au, π+ Al and π+ Au interactions at 250 GeV/c are studied with the European Hybrid Spectrometer, providing high statistics and almost 4 π acceptance for final state charged particles. It is shown that the proton energy spectrum practically does not depend on the target atomic weight, but the proton angular distributions reveal a strongA-dependence. In a model independent way, the average number of intranuclear collisions is extracted, and it is shown that their dominant part (60% for Al and 80% for Au) is caused by interactions of the non-leading particles produced in the target fragmentation. The multiplication ratio of the produced particles for the Au nucleus changes fromR≃40 at the smallest rapidities in the target fragmentation region, down toR=0.37±0.06 at the largest rapidities in the beam fragmentation region. It is found that the average total longitudinal momentum of the charged products of the beam fragmentation depends weakly on the number of leading hadron (cluster) intranuclear collisions which are characterized by a low inelasticity coefficient 〈k〉=0.17±0.03.

New data are reported on antiproton annihilations at rest with production of Λ and K s 0 , using a streamer chamber with 3 He, 4 He and 20 Ne as gas targets. The data include Λ, K s 0 , ΛK s 0 and K s 0 K S 0 production rates and momentum distributions, π − momentum spectra, mean numbers of charged particles generally and of negatively charged particles separately for different reaction channels. The yields are compared to simple combinatorial calculations based on the extreme assumptions of Λ production via B = 1 or via B = 0 ( K ̄ rescattering) annihilations. Λ and K s 0 momentum spectra are compared to simple model calculations where B = 0 and B = 1 annihilations with and without final-state interactions are considered. A review of existing data on Λ and K s 0 production is presented, showing the dependence on the p ̄ momentum and on the mass number of the target.

ANTIPROTONS STOPPING IN THE PHOTOEMULSION.
We report on a study of ρ0, ρ+, ω,\(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) andK*0 (892) inclusive production in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c, for ρ+,\(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) for the first time in a π+p experiment. The data are compared withK+p data in the same experiment, with results of other experiments and with quark-parton models. Interesting differences are found between ρ+,0 and ω production.
