We present measurements of the bottom-quark production cross sections in pp¯ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. From the inclusive electron production rate, we have determined the bottom-quark production cross sections to be 1010±270, 168±43, 37±10 nb for the rapidity range of ‖yb‖<1.0 and the transverse momentum ranges of pTb>15, 23, 32 GeV/c, respectively. In addition, from the associated electron-D0 production rate, we have determined the bottom-quark cross section to be 364±80(stat)±95(syst) nb for ‖yb‖<1.0 and pTb>19 GeV/c.

Inspire Record 16663 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30388

The production of neutral K ∗ (890) and ρ 0 mesons was studied in e + e − annihilation at s =29 GeV using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the scaled energy variable z and compared to π 0 and K 0 production. The measured multiplicities are 0.84±0.08 ϱ 0 mesons and 0.57±0.09 K ∗0 (890) mesons per event for a meson momentum greater than 725 MeV/ c . The ratios of vector meson to pseudoscalar meson production for (u,d), s and c quark are compared to predictions of the Lund model.

We report a measurement of the charged K ∗ (892) production in e + e − annihilations at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy. The 300 pb −1 data sample used for this analysis is obtained with the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The total mean multiplicity is measured to be 〈n K ∗± (892) 〉=0.62±0.045±0.04 per hadronic event. Evidence is also given for the production of a charged K 2 ∗ (1430) tensor meson.

Inclusive J/ψ and ψ(2S) production has been studied in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV using 2.6±0.2 pb−1 of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The products of production cross section times branching fraction were measured as functions of PT for J/ψ→μ+μ− and ψ(2S)→μ+μ−. In the kinematic range PT>6 GeV/c and ‖η‖≤0.5 we get σ(p¯p→J/ψ X)B(J/ψ→μ+μ−) =6.88±0.23(stat)−1.08+0.93(syst) nb, and σ(p¯p→ψ(2S)X)B(ψ(2S)→μ+μ−) =0.232±0.051(stat)−0.032+0.029(syst)nb. From these values we calculate the inclusive b-quark production cross section.

Neutral D ∗ meson production in e + e − annihilation at √ s =29 GeV has been studied using the high resolution spectrometer. The decay of D ∗0 into D 0 γ, where the D 0 decays into K −π + , has been observed. The production cross section in units of the point cross section is 0.63±0.22 for fractional energy Z ⩾0.5. The fragmentation function is compared with that of the D ∗+ meson measured in the same experiment.

Hadron Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=29$-{GeV}

Data from the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of baryons and mesons. Time-of-flight measurements are used to identify the charged hadrons. Neutral hadrons are identified from effective-mass peaks associated with their decay into two charged particles. Cross sections and other inclusive production characteristics are presented for π±, K±, and K0 (K¯0) mesons, and for the baryons (antibaryons) p (p¯) and Λ (Λ¯). The ratio of the inclusive cross section to the point cross section for the K0 and K¯0 mesons is R(K0,K¯0)=6.15±0.13±0.25, and for Λ and Λ¯, R(Λ,Λ¯)=0.846±0.036±0.085. The neutral-hadron differential cross sections are compared with the predictions of the Lund string model.

Production of $\eta$ Mesons in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilations at $\sqrt{s}=29$-{GeV}

Data from e + e − annihilations at 29 GeV have been used to measure the production cross section and fragmentation function of η mesons. The signal is observed in the η → γγ decay channel. The fragmentation for p η >1.5 GeV/ c agrees well with the prediction of the Lund model, whereas the prediction of the Webber model lies above the data. The mean multiplicity is measured to be 〈 n η 〉=0.58±0.10 η mesons per hadronic event, of which 0.51 represents the direct production of η and η ′ mesons in the fragmentation chain.

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of Λ hyperons in electron-positron annihilations at s=29 GeV based on the full 291-pb−1 sample of data taken in the High Resolution Spectrometer experiment at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. These results, and the associated correlation analyses, are consistent with the Lund model predictions with the strange diquark suppression ratio δ fixed at 0.59±0.10±0.18, as compared to the standard Lund value of 0.32. The Λ multiplicity has been found to be 0.182±0.020 per event. The opposite-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ¯〉 has been measured to be 0.046±0.020, whereas the like-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ+Λ¯Λ¯〉 is 0.009±0.028. A strong correlation is found between Λ's and Λ¯'s; when one is found in an event, the other is found in the same event with a probability that exceeds 50%.

We report new measurements of the production cross section for the reaction e+e−→τ+τ− at s=29 GeV, as well as the topological decay branching fractions of the τ lepton. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC e+e− colliding-beam facility PEP. The measured cross section yields Rττ=1.044±0.014±0.030 [where the first (second) error is statistical (systematic)], consistent with QED and corresponding to QED cutoff parameters of Λ+>129 GeV and Λ−>284 GeV at the 95% C.L. The fractions of τ decays into one and three charged particles are B1=0.864±0.003±0.003 and B3=0.135±0.003±0.003.
