We have measured the K0+K¯ 0 inclusive cross section in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV with the Mark II detector SLAC PEP. We find 1.27±0.03±0.15 K0+K¯ 0 per hadronic event. We have also used time-of-flight particle identification to measure the K± rate over the momentum range 300–900 MeV/c.

Inclusive production cross sections for photons and π0's ine+e− annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV have been measured. The π0 production spectrum agrees with a corresponding measurement for π±. The ratio of the π0 inclusive rate to the average for π± is 0.92±0.14. The fractions of the total energy carried by photons and π0's are 0.244±0.016 and 0.217±0.033, respectively. The fraction of total energy carried by all stable hadrons, prompt leptons and photons is determined to be 0.938±0.045, leaving 0.062±0.045 for neutrinos.

Elastic Scattering of Charged Mesons, Anti-protons and Protons on Protons at Incident Momenta of 20-{GeV}/$c$, 30-{GeV}/$c$ and 50-{GeV}/$c$ in the Momentum Transfer Range $0.5-{\rm GeV}/c^2 < -t < 8-{\rm GeV}/c^2$

Results are presented from experiment WA7 at the CERN SPS, which has measured the elastic differential cross sections of π ± p, K ± p, p p and pp at incident momen ta of 20, 30 and 50 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the momentum transfer range 0.5 < | t | < 8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , corresponding to c.m. scattering angles between 10° and 50°. The experimental set-up, trigger logic and data analysis are described. The experimental results are compared with existing meson-proton and nucleon-proton data at lower and higher energies covering the medium- and large-| t | region. Some prominent models and their predictions for elastic scattering at WA7 energies and beyond are reviewed, with emphasis on geometrical scaling, factorizing eikonal models, lowest-order QCD and other dynamical exchange-type models. Results for p p two-body annihilation into π − π + and K − K + at 30 and 50 GeV/ c , obtained in parallel with the elastic p p data, are also presented.

Observation of Xi- Production in $p \bar{p}$ Interactions at 540-{GeV} {CMS} Energy

Inspire Record 204764 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30437

We have made the first observations of Ξ − production in p p interactions at √ s =540 GeV. In a sample of 6964 non single-diffractive events we observe 17 Ξ − decays with an estimated background of less than one event. This corresponds to 0.04 ± 0.01 Ξ − per event in the transverse momentum range p t >1.0 GeV/ c and in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 3.5. Assuming an exponential p t distribution, we find 〈 p t 〉=1.1 −0.2 +0.3 GeV/ c .

The production of Λ hyperons in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.213±0.012±0.018 Λ or Λ¯ per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected Λ decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation.

The energy spectra of deuterons recoiling from a deuterium gas target bombarded by transversely polarized 796-MeV protons have been measured to obtain the differential cross sections, dσdt, and analyzing powers, Ay(t), for p→-d elastic scattering over a range of laboratory angles from 4.53° to 13.02°, corresponding to a range of four-momentum transfer squared, |t|, from 0.013 to 0.108 GeV2/c2. Employing several sets of nucleon-nucleon, N-N, amplitudes obtained from N-N phase shift analyses, comparisons are made between the experimental data and the predictions of a multiple scattering theory. In this region of four-momentum transfer, Ay is shown to depend almost entirely on the spin-independent and spin-orbit N-N amplitudes. NUCLEAR REACTIONS d(p→, p)d, E=796 MeV; measured dσdt(θ) and Ay(θ); comparison with multiple-scattering theory using free N-N amplitudes, −t=0.013−0.108 GeV2/c2, Δt=1.88×10−3 GeV2/c2.

New data are presented on the charged multiplicity distribution for non single-diffractive events produced in pp̄ interactions at a CM energy s = 540 GeV . The distribution in the full pseudorapidity range is compared with data from the ISR. Using the scaling variable z = n 〈n〉 a change of shape is observed. The effect is manifested as an increase from 2% to 6% in the proportion of high multiplicity ( z > 2) events. For the central pseudorapidity range, | η | ⪅ 1.5, scaling is approximately valid up to s = 540 GeV .

THE SCALING VARIABLE Z IS N/MEAN(N). THE ERRORS ARE HIGHLY CORRELATED AND ARE BASED ON THE SQUARE ROOT OF THE NUMBER OF EVENTS IN THE BIN. IN THE CASE OF MULTIPLICITIES 2,4, AND 6, ADDITIONAL SYSTEMATIC ERRORS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. ABOVE MULTIPLICITY 96 BINS HAVE BEEN COMBINED - THE VALUE IN THE TABLE IS THE AVERAGE OVER THE RANGE - NOT THE SUM. NOTE ALSO THAT IN FIG. 1 THE "Y-VALUE" IS MULTIPLIED BY THE MEAN MULTIPLICITY (29.1).

A Study of D* Production in High-Energy $\gamma$ p Interactions

Phys.Rev.D 32 (1985) 1053-1060, 1985.
Inspire Record 194636 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23561

We have studied D* production mechanisms using data from a photoproduction experiment at the Fermilab Tagged Photon Spectrometer. A large sample of charged D*’s was selected via the clean signature of the cascade decay D*→D0π+ and subsequently D0→K−π+ or D0→K−π+π0. The cross section for the process γp→(D*++anything)p at an average energy of 105 GeV was measured to be 88±32 nb. Only (11±7)% of D*’s were found to be consistent with being accompanied solely by a D¯* or a D¯; the remaining events contain additional particles. The distribution of the production angle of the D* in the photon-fragmentation-system center of mass is strongly anisotropic and consistent with the form f(θ*)=cos4θ*. We set a limit on the associated-production-process cross section σ(γp→(D¯*−+anything)Λc) x)<60 nb (90% C.L.).

Inelastic and Elastic Photoproduction of J/$\psi$ (3097)

Inelastic and elastic $J/\psi$ photoproduction on hydrogen are investigated at a mean energy of 105 GeV. The inelastic cross section with $E_{\psi} / E_{\gamma}$ < 0.9 is significantly lower than the corresponding result for muoproduction on iron targets, but is consistent with a second-order perturbative QCD calculation.

Pion Pair Production From $\gamma \gamma$ Collisions at {PEP}

We have studied several features of the production of charged-hardon pairs by γγ collisions. We have measured the f0 partial width Γf0→γγ(Q2) for Q2 in the range 0<Q2<1.4 GeV2/c2, and obtained Γf0→γγ=2.52±0.13±0.38 keV at Q2≈0. The measured Q2 dependence is in agreement with the generalized vector-dominance model. The cross section for γγ→(π+π−+K+K−) in the mass region 1.6≤Mππ≤2.5 GeV/c2 has also been measured and the result compared with that expected from the QCD continuum.
