A search for flavor-changing neutral-current couplings between a top quark, an up or charm quark and a $Z$ boson is presented, using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The search targets both single-top-quark events produced as $gq\rightarrow tZ$ (with $q = u, c$) and top-quark-pair events, with one top quark decaying through the $t \rightarrow Zq$ channel. The analysis considers events with three leptons (electrons or muons), a $b$-tagged jet, possible additional jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data are found to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis and 95% confidence-level limits on the $t \rightarrow Zq$ branching ratios are set, assuming only tensor operators of the Standard Model effective field theory framework contribute to the $tZq$ vertices. These are $6.2 \times 10^{-5}$ ($13\times 10^{-5}$) for $t\rightarrow Zu$ ($t\rightarrow Zc$) for a left-handed $tZq$ coupling, and $6.6 \times 10^{-5}$ ($12\times 10^{-5}$) in the case of a right-handed coupling. These results are interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the strength of corresponding couplings, yielding limits for $|C_{uW}^{(13)*}|$ and $|C_{uB}^{(13)*}|$ ($|C_{uW}^{(31)}|$ and $|C_{uB}^{(31)}|$) of 0.15 (0.16), and limits for $|C_{uW}^{(23)*}|$ and $|C_{uB}^{(23)*}|$ ($|C_{uW}^{(32)}|$ and $|C_{uB}^{(32)}|$) of 0.22 (0.21), assuming a new-physics energy scale $\Lambda_\text{NP}$ of 1 TeV.
Summary of the signal strength $\mu$ parameters obtained from the fits to extract LH and RH results for the FCNC tZu and tZc couplings. For the reference branching ratio, the most stringent limits are used.
Observed and expected 95% CL limits on the FCNC $t\rightarrow Zq$ branching ratios and the effective coupling strengths for different vertices and couplings (top eight rows). For the latter, the energy scale is assumed to be $\Lambda_{NP}$ = 1 TeV. The bottom rows show, for the case of the FCNC $t\rightarrow Zu$ branching ratio, the observed and expected 95% CL limits when only one of the two SRs, either SR1 or SR2, and all CRs are included in the likelihood.
Comparison between data and background prediction before the fit (Pre-Fit) for the mass of the SM top-quark candidate in SR1. The uncertainty band includes both the statistical and systematic uncertainties in the background prediction. The four FCNC LH signals are also shown separately, normalized to five times the cross-section corresponding to the most stringent observed branching ratio limits. The first (last) bin in all distributions includes the underflow (overflow). The lower panels show the ratios of the data (Data) to the background prediction (Bkg.).
We present the final results of the spin asymmetries A1 and the spin structure functions g1 of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic range 0.0008<x<0.7 and 0.2<Q2<100GeV2. For the determination of A1, in addition to the usual method which employs inclusive scattering events and includes a large radiative background at low x, we use a new method which minimizes the radiative background by selecting events with at least one hadron as well as a muon in the final state. We find that this hadron method gives smaller errors for x<0.02, so it is combined with the usual method to provide the optimal set of results.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function g1 including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%.

We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry A 1 p from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 . With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of 2 compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function g 1 p is determined for the data with Q 2 > 1 GeV 2 . A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine g 1 p ( x ) at a constant Q 2 . At Q 2 = 10 GeV 2 we find, in the measured range, ∫ 0.003 0.7 g 1 P (x) d x=0.139±0.006 ( stat ) ±0.008 ( syst ) ±0.006( evol ) . The value of the first moment Г 1 P = ∫ 0 1 g 1 p (x) d x of g 1 p depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of g 1 p at low x . We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for Γ 1 d we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of ≈ 15% at the one standard deviation level.

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1~p$ in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003 < x < 0.7$ and $1 GeV~2 < Q~2 < 60 GeV~2$. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured $g_1~p(x,Q~2)$ to a fixed $Q~2_0$. The first moment of $g_1~p$ at $Q~2_0 = 10 GeV~2$ is $\Gamma~p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.)$. This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge $a_0$ is found to be $0.28 \pm 0.16$. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, $\Delta g \simeq 2$ is required to bring $\Delta \Sigma$ in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model. A combined analysis of all available proton and deuteron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule.

We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of g 1 d . A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute g 1 d ( x ) at a constant Q 2 . At Q 2 = 10 GeV 2 , we obtain a first moment Γ 1 d =∫ 1 d g 1 d d x =0.041±0.008, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon a 0 = 0.30 ± 0.08, and an axial charge of the strange quark a s = −0.09 ± 0.03. Using our earlier determination of Γ 1 p , we obtain Γ 1 p − Γ 1 m = 0.183 ± 0.035 at Q 2 = 10GeV 2 . This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts Γ 1 p − Γ 1 n = 0.186 ± 0.002 at the same Q 2 .

We present a QCD analysis of the proton structure function $F_2$ measured by the H1 experiment at HERA, combined with data from previous fixed target experiments. The gluon density is extracted from the scaling violations of $F_2$ in the range $2\cdot 10~{-4}<x<3\cdot 10~{-2}$ and compared with an approximate solution of the QCD evolution equations. The gluon density is found to rise steeply with decreasing $x$.

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of \ee data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in \ep interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in \ee annihilation. The measured area, peak position and widthof the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the \ee squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. We comment on the extent to which we have evidence for coherence effects in parton showers.

We present the structure function ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at a nominal incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The kinematic range 0.0001 < x < 0.7 and 0.01< Q~2 < 70 GeV~2 is covered. For values of $x$ less than $0.002$ both ratios indicate saturation of shadowing at values compatible with photoabsorption results.

We present a re-evaluation of the structure function ratios F2(He)/F2(D), F2(C)/F2(D) and F2(Ca)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon momentum of 200 GeV. A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

A measurement of the proton structure function $F_{\!2}(x,Q~2)$ is reported for momentum transfer squared $Q~2$ between 4.5 $GeV~2$ and 1600 $GeV~2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $1.8\cdot10~{-4}$ and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that $F_{\!2}$ increases significantly with decreasing $x$, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The $Q~2$ dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the "diffractive" contribution to $F_{\!2}$.

Jet rates in deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied with the H1 detector at HERA for momentum transfers squared between 10 and 4000 GeV 2 . It is shown that they can be quantitatively described by perturbative QCD in next to leading order making use of the parton densities of the proton and with the strong coupling constant α s as a free parameter. The measured value, α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.123 ± 0.018, is in agreement both with determinations from e + e − annihilation at LEP using the same observable and with the world average.

We measured the spin asymmetry in the scattering of 100 GeV longitudinally-polarized muons on transversely polarized protons. The asymmetry was found to be compatible with zero in the kinematic range $0.006<x<0.6$, $1<Q~2<30\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. {}From this result we derive the upper limits for the virtual photon--proton asymmetry $A_2$, and for the spin structure function $g_2$. For $x<0.15$, $A_2$ is significantly smaller than its positivity limit $\sqrt{R}$.

: We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1~p$ of the proton in deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003<x<0.7$ and $1\,\mbox{GeV}~2<Q~2<60\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. Its first moment, $\int_0~1 g_1~p(x) dx $, is found to be $0.136 \pm 0.011\,(\mbox{stat.})\pm 0.011\,(\mbox{syst.})$ at $Q~2=10\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. This value is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis--Jaffe sum rule by two standard deviations, and is consistent with previous measurements. A combined analysis of all available proton, deuteron and neutron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule to within $10\%$ of the theoretical value.

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

We report results on a precision measurement of the ratio R=σLσT in deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering in the kinematic range 0.2≤x≤0.5 and 1≤Q2≤10 (GeV/c)2. Our results show, for the first time, a clear falloff of R with increasing Q2. Our R results are in agreement with QCD predictions only when corrections for target mass effects and some additional higher twist effects are included. At small x, the data on R favor structure functions with a large gluon contribution. We also report results on the differences RA−RD and the cross section ratio σAσD between Fe and Au nuclei and the deuteron. Our results for RA−RD are consistent with zero for all x, Q2 indicating that possible contributions to R from nuclear higher twist effects and spin-0 constituents in nuclei are not different from those in nucleons. The ratios σAσD from all recent experiments, at all x, Q2 values, are now in agreement.

An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 for four-momentum transfers Q > 2 larger than 8.7 GeV 2 . The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q 2 . Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G ( x , Q 0 2 ) at Q 2 2 = 20 GeV 2 .
