Measurement of the Difference in $P N$ Total Cross-sections in Pure Longitudinal Spin States

The total-cross-section difference in pure longitudinal spin states for p−d interactions has been measured at momenta from 1.1 to 6 GeV/c. Spin-dependent Glauber-type corrections and other corrections have been made to obtain ΔσL(pn) and ΔσL(I=0). These measurements are of fundamental interest and will also help in determining the existence and nature of dibaryon resonances.

The (3 $\pi$) - Nucleon Collision in Coherent Production on Nuclei at 40-{GeV}/$c$

Coherent 3 π production on nine different nuclear targets has been studied using a 40 GeV/ c π − beam at the Serpukhov accelerator (CERN-Serpukhov experiment no. 5). The absorption in nuclear matter of the produced system has been measured, analysing the data on the different nuclear targets. Identica results are obtained from the differential cross sections and from the coherent nuclear cross sections. The 1 + waves show a very weak absorption, definitely smaller than 0 − and 2 − waves. No influence on the absorption comes from the spin-flip amplitudes, which have been found to be negligible in the coherent region.

A Study of Inclusive Xi-, Xi (1530) and $\omega^-$ Production in $K^- p$ Interactions at 8.25-{GeV}/$c$

Inclusive Ξ − production is studied in K − p interactions at 8.25 GeV/ c using about 8000 events. An analysis based on the triple-Regge model shows that the Λ α − Λ γ and Σ β − Σ δ exchanges explain the forward Ξ − production. Ξ(1530) properties are also studied and are found to be similar to those of Ξ − 's. Finally, a study of the production of Ω − based on 67 events shows that Ω's are also produced by hyperon exchange.

Coherent Proton Diffraction Dissociation on Helium From 46-{GeV} to 400-{GeV}

Inclusive coherent proton diffraction dissociation on helium has been measured in the four-momentum transfer and missing-mass region 0.04<|t|<0.40 (GeV/c)2, MX2<10 GeV2 and for incident proton beam momenta from 46 to 400 GeV/c. We find that the differential cross section d2σdtdMX2 varies slowly with energy, reveals a pronounced peak at MX2≃2 GeV2, and at large masses behaves approximately as 1MX2. The cross section falls exponentially as |t| increases, with a large slope parameter at small momentum transfers and a substantially smaller one at large |t| values, with no clear dip between the two regions as seen in elastic scattering. We compare the experimental t distributions to Glauber-model predictions and find the data provide a sensitive test of the assumptions on the details of the elementary proton diffraction-dissociation amplitudes and on the total cross sections of the diffractively produced states.

Inclusive $K^0$ Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation for 9.3-{GeV} $<\sqrt{s}<$ 31.6-{GeV}

Results on inclusive K s 0 production in e + e − annihilation at mean center-of-mass energies of 9.4, 12.0 and 30 GeV are presented. The ratio R (K 0 ) = 2 σ (K s 0 )/ σ μμ rises from 3.10 ± 0.75 at √ s = 9.4 GeV to 5.6 ± 1.2 at √ s = 30 GeV, corresponding to an approximately constant K 0 /charged-particle ratio of 0.12 ± 0.02. A similar ratio for K 0 / charged particle is observed for direct hadronic decays of the ϒ.

The reaction π − p → φφ n has been isolated at 16 GeV/ c and its cross section determined to be 40 ± 10 nb. The φφ mass spectrum shows a threshold enhancement between 2.1 and 2.5 GeV. A successful description of the angular content of the φφ system requires two interferingss J P = 2 + states.

The reaction γ p → K + K − p has been investigated with tagged photons in the energy range of 20 < E γ < 70 GeV. A structure in the 1.7 GeV mass region is observed and interpreted in terms of a recurrence of the ø.

Determination of the Quark Density Ratio $d(x)/u(x)$ in the Proton

Data from an exposure of BEBC filled with hydrogen to a wideband neutrino beam are analysed to yield the structure function F v p 2 ( x ) for x > 0.2. Using our results in combination with data from electron-proton and muon-proton scattering, the quark density ratio d/u is determined as a function of x . The dominance u at large x is clearly seen. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.
