A comprehensive measurement of the differential cross section for π±p and pp elastic scattering has been made at large center-of-mass angles. π−p and pp scattering were measured with incident laboratory momenta ranging from 2 to 9.5 GeV/c. π+p scattering was measured with momenta from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c. Scattering angles were in the range −0.3≲cosθc.m.≲0.4. The results of the experiment are compared to constituent models and statistical models.

Phi Production in pi- p Collisions Near Threshold

Inspire Record 125080 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24607

Using a secondary pion beam from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron we have studied the process π−p→φn in the region of the cross-section enhancement near kinematic threshold. For incident momenta between 1.6 and 2 GeV/c, we have determined production and decay angular distributions and extrapolated total cross sections from a sample of about 160 φ's above background. The production and decay distributions are consistent with isotropy over this entire incident-momentum range. The extrapolated total cross section varies between 19 and 25 μb.

We have measured the polarization parameter for proton-proton elastic scattering at p0 = 6 GeV/c for |t|<0.5 (GeV/c)2 using the polarized proton beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These data, together with all previous measurements in this t region, are well fitted by the empirical relation P = (0.481±0.010)(−t)12exp(2.291±0.085)t.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive Reactions Polarized $P$, $P$ Goes to $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, and $P$ at High $P$(t) at 13.3-{GeV}/$c$ and 18.5-{GeV}/$c$

Phys.Rev.Lett. 64 (1990) 995, 1990.
Inspire Record 26394 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19960

Data are presented for the left-right asymmetry in inclusive production of π+, π−, and p with proton beams (polarized normal to the scattering plane) of 13.3 and 18.5 GeV/c incident on a LH2 target. At both energies the asymmetry in π+ production grows steadily to about 25% near the kinematic limit, whereas the π− and p asymmetries are consistent with zero over the measured range of pt, 1.1–2.2 GeV/c.

A Measurement of the Energy Dependence of Elastic $\pi p$ and $p p$ Scattering at Large Angles

Jenkins, K.A. ; Price, L.E. ; Klem, R. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 40 (1978) 425, 1978.
Inspire Record 6233 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.3359

We have measured π±p and pp elastic differential cross sections in the range |cosθc.m.|<0.35 for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for π−p and pp and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for π+p. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle πp differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of s. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.

CROSS-SECTION AND POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS OF P HE-4 ELASTIC SCATTERING AT GEV ENERGIES

Phys.Rev.C 19 (1979) 104-119, 1979.
Inspire Record 145405 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26364

We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed. We present preliminary results on the measurement of a variety of exclusive hadron interactions at center of mass scattering angles of 90°. Data are also presented which show the relative transparency of nuclei to πp and pp elastic scattering in this kinematic range.

Cross sections or upper limits are reported for 12 meson-baryon and two baryon-baryon reactions for an incident momentum of 9.9 GeV/c, near 90° c.m.: π±p→pπ±,pp±,π+°±,K+Σ±, (Λ0/Σ0)K0; K±p→pK±; p±p→pp. By studying the flavor dependence of the different reactions, we have been able to isolate the quark-interchange mechanism as dominant over gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation.

DECAY DISTRIBUTION OF HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM RHO MESONS

The exclusive process π−p→ρ−p has been measured at 90° c.m. with an incident pion momentum of 9.9 GeV/c. We present data on the angular dependence of the decay ρ−→π−π0. We observe a strong azimuthal dependence in the decay in the c.m. helicity frame of the ρ. Such an azimuthal dependence is not compatible with SU(6) valence-quark perturbation calculations.

ANALYZING POWER IN LARGE ANGLE PROTON NEUTRON ELASTIC SCATTERING

Inspire Record 159455 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20701

The large-angle analyzing power A in proton-neutron elastic scattering at 2, 3, and 6 GeV/c with use of the polarized proton beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron and a liquid deuterium target have been measured. The measurements, the first at high energy, show that A is large (20-40%) and negative over much of the angular range and shows no decrease with incident energy, unlike the earlier data at smaller angles.
