We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of $K^+\Lambda$ and $K^+\Sigma^0$ final states from a proton target using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions $\sigma_T$, $\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{TT}$, and $\sigma_{LT}$ were extracted from the $\Phi$- and $\epsilon$-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first $\sigma_L/\sigma_T$ separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. The data span a broad range of momentum transfers from $0.5\leq Q^2\leq 2.8$ GeV$^2$ and invariant energy from $1.6\leq W\leq 2.4$ GeV, while spanning nearly the full center-of-mass angular range of the kaon. The separated structure functions reveal clear differences between the production dynamics for the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$ hyperons. These results provide an unprecedented data sample with which to constrain current and future models for the associated production of strangeness, which will allow for a better understanding of the underlying resonant and non-resonant contributions to hyperon production.

First data are presented for the polarized-target asymmetry in the reaction π+p→π+pγ at an incident pion energy of 298 MeV. The geometry was chosen to maximize the sensitivity to the radiation of the magnetic dipole moment μΔ of the Δ++(1232 MeV). A fit of the asymmetry in the cross section d5σ/dΩπ dΩγ dk as a function of the photon energy k to predictions from a recent isobar-model calculation with μΔ as the only free parameter yields μΔ=1.64(±0.19expΔ,±0.14 theor)μp. Though this value agrees with bag-model corrections to the SU(6) prediction μΔ=2μp, further clarifications on the model dependence of the result are needed, in particular since the isobar model fails to describe both the cross section and the asymmetry at the highest photon energies.

We present measurements of the differential cross section and Lambda recoil polarization for the gamma p to K+ Lambda reaction made using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These measurements cover the center-of-mass energy range from 1.62 to 2.84 GeV and a wide range of center-of-mass K+ production angles. Independent analyses were performed using the K+ p pi- and K+ p (missing pi -) final-state topologies/ results from these analyses were found to exhibit good agreement. These differential cross section measurements show excellent agreement with previous CLAS and LEPS results and offer increased precision and a 300 MeV increase in energy coverage. The recoil polarization data agree well with previous results and offer a large increase in precision and a 500 MeV extension in energy range. The increased center-of-mass energy range that these data represent will allow for independent study of non-resonant K+ Lambda photoproduction mechanisms at all production angles.

We measured the polarization of the recoil proton in the process γp→pη0, at 90° in the center-of-mass system, at incoming photon energies from 0.8 to 1.1 GeV. Detection of all three particles in the final state pγγ permitted observation of this process with little background. Subsequent rescattering off carbon nuclei yielded sizable polarization values for the protons, indicating considerable S−P—wave interference in the production process.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

The target analysing power at incident kinetic energy 220 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.014 and a scalar error of 2.5 PCT.
The target analysing power at incident kinetic energy 325 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.015 and a scalar error of 2.5 PCT.
The target analysing power at incident kinetic energy 425 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.019 and a scalar error of 2.5 PCT.
Measurements of the beam and target analysis powers from CSB (Charge symmetry breaking experiment Triumf-121 - see also PR D39,2464(1989). Additional scale uncertainty is 2.6 PCT (4.7 PCT) for the beam (target) analysing power. Note that the authors advise that the data presented in this table should not be used as a precise test of charge symmatry breaking since the presentation here does not result in the careful cancellation of all systematic errors.
The spin correlation parameter at incident kinetic energy 220 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.019 and a scalar error of 5.5 PCT.
The spin correlation parameter at incident kinetic energy 325 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.019 and a scalar error of 5.3 PCT.
The spin correlation parameter at incident kinetic energy 425 MeV. Additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.022 and a scalar error of 5.4 PCT.
The angles at which the n-p elastic scattering neutron analyzing power A00n0 crosses zero were measured with precision at four TRIUMF energies below 300 MeV. The mean interaction energies are also measured with greater precision than in previous experiments. The results are En=175.26±0.23 MeV, θzx=98.48°±0.28°; En=203.15±0.20 MeV, θzx=91.31°±0.18°; En=217.24±0.19 MeV, θzx=87.64°±0.18°; and En=261.00±0.16 MeV, θzx=80.18°±0.19°. After correction for charge symmetry breaking effects, the energy where the averaged neutron-proton analyzing power crosses zero at θzx=90° is found to be En=206.8±0.6 MeV. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

The target asymmetry for the reaction γ p → K + Λ 0 was measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchroton. Data were taken at a fixed kaon c.m. angle of 90° and at photon energies between 1.1 and 1.3 GeV. The kaons were detected in a large aperture magnetic spectrometer.
5 PCT TARGET POLARIZATION UNCERTAINTY INCLUDED IN QUOTED ERRORS.
Measurements of the target asymmetry T = ( σ ↑ − σ ↓)/( σ ↑ + σ ↓) for the reactions γ p → π + n and γ n → π − p at a fixed photon energy of 850 MeV and pion c.m. angles between 70° and 150° are reported. The data are compared to the previously measured angular distribution at 700 MeV.
