ONE EVENT SEEN - PROBABLY AN ANTIPROTON.
We have observed 1085 events of the type e + e − → hadrons, in the total centre-of-mass energy range √ s = 1.2 to 3.0 GeV. The energy dependence of the total annihilation cross-section, parametrized in the form σ ( e + e − → hadrons ) = A · s n , is measured to be n = -(1.54 −0.29 +0.17 ) in the above energy range.

Data have been taken at the φ energy with the same large solid angle detector which has been used for the measurement of the ϱ and ω production by e + e − annihilations. From the φ → K o L K o S π + φ − excitation curve we have deduced the φ width Γ φ = (3.81 ± 0.37) MeV and the cross-section σ e + e − → K o L K o S = (1.48±0.08±0.12) μ b. (the quoted errors are respectively statistical and systematical.)

New results on the multihadron production by electron and positron beams colliding with a total energy of up to 3 GeV are reported. Disregarding possible kaon final states, the ratio σ mh / σ μμ of the total multihadron cross-section to the point-like cross section for process e + e − → μ + μ − has an average value of 1.58 ± 0.25 in the energy interval 2.6–3.0 GeV. The average charged multiplicity over this energy range is 〈 n c 〉 = 2.9 ± 0.3.
AT A MEAN ENERGY OF 2.85 GEV, THE AVERAGE MULTIHADRON CROSS SECTION IS 16.4 +- 2.6 NB (R = 1.58 +- 0.25).
A large solid angle detector has been used to observe π + π − π o events produced at the φ energy by electron-positron collisions in the Orsay storage ring. Fitting our data with a Breit and Wigner curve, with a fixed width Γ = (3.8±0.4) MeV coming from K O S K O L analysis, we deduce σ e + e − → π + π − π O = (0.70±0.13) μ bat 2 E = Mφ . Using our measurements on the other φ decay modes we deduce ( φ → π + π − π o )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 0.47±0.06 and ( φ → η o γ )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 0.077±0.022. Assuming ( φ → K + K − )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 1.60, we derive σ TOT = (4.7±0.4) μ b, Γ e + e − = (1.27±0.11 keV and g 2 o /4 π = 14.3±1.3 (without finite width correction). Furthermore (from the observation of the ππγ coplanar events) we put an upper limit to the mode e + e − → φ π + π − γ , Γ ( φ → π + π − γ ) ⩽ 0.007 Γ ( φ → Total ) with 90% C.L.

We have observed a second sharp peak in the cross section for e+e−→hadrons at a center-of-mass energy of 3.695±0.004 GeV. The upper limit of the full width at half-maximum is 2.7 MeV.

The results of an experiment performed at Adone, the 2×1.5-GeV e+e− Frascati storage ring, are presented. During ∼ 1500 hours of running time a total of 5164 electron-positron elastic scattering events (integrated luminosity L=3.5×1035 cm−2) and 605 noncoplanar events from the reaction e+e−→a±+b±+anything (effective integrated luminosity L=2.5×1035 cm−2) have been collected at c.m. energies ranging from 1.4 to 2.4 GeV. Over the energy range explored (1.4-2.4 GeV), corresponding to an average q2 ranging from 0.8 to 2.4 (GeV/c)2, the yield of wide-angle (60°<θ<120°) electron-positron elastic scattering events is found to be in good agreement with the predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED) (R=σexpσQED=1.05±0.04). The noncoplanar events appear to be of a hadronic nature and are produced with a much higher cross section than predicted on the basis of ρ, ω, φ dominance at these energies. The total cross section for the reaction e+e−→a±b±+anything shows a rapid increase to ∼ 90 nb between 1.0 and 1.5 GeV and falls off slowly to ∼ 50 nb at 2.4 GeV. Cross sections for some of the channels contributing to this multihadron process (e+e−→π+π−π+π−, e+e−→π+π−π+π−+neutrals, e+e−→3π+3π−) have been determined and are reported.

VALUES OF R CALCULATED FROM TOTAL CROSS SECTION.
Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.
